Video: Der DOK-Versuch - Eine Internationale Forschungsplattform Organic Eprints

Earthworm abundance response to conservation agriculture practices in organic arable farming under Mediterranean climate Organic Eprints
Baldivieso-Freitas, Paola; Blanco-Moreno, José M.; Gutiérrez-López, Mónica; Peigné, Joséphine; Pérez-Ferrer, Alejandro; Trigo-Aza, Dolores; Sans, Francesc Xavier.
Earthworms are one of the most important soil macrofaunal groups, and they play a major role in agricultural ecosystems. Agricultural practices, such as reduced tillage, the use of green manures and organic fertilization, can be beneficial for earthworm populations in agricultural systems. However, under a Mediterranean climate, not much is known regarding their response to agricultural management. The aim of this study was to analyse the effects of tillage type, organic fertilization, and green manures on the density and biomass of earthworms in organic arable dryland. The trial was conducted in a four-year crop rotation with a complete factorial design that combined tillage system (mouldboard ploughing vs. chisel), fertilization (composted farmyard...

Sources of nitrogen for winter wheat in organic cropping systems Organic Eprints
Petersen, Søren O.; Schjønning, P.; Olesen, Jørgen E.; Christensen, S.; Christensen, B.T..
In organic cropping systems, legumes, cover crops, residue incorporation, and manure application are used to maintain soil fertility, but the contributions of these management practices to soil nitrogen (N) supply remain obscure. We examined potential sources of N for winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in four experimental cropping systems established in 1997 on three soil types. Three of the four systems were under organic management. Topsoil N, depth of the A horizon, and cumulated inputs of N since 1997 were determined at plot level. Labile soil N pools (mineral N, potentially mineralizable N [PMN], microbial biomass N [MBN]) were monitored during two growth periods; at one site, biomass C/N ratios were also determined. Soil for labile N analysis was...

Jordbearbejdning i økologisk jordbrug – pløjedybde og ikke-vendende jordløsning [Soil tillage in organic farming – ploughing depth and non-inversion deep tillage] Organic Eprints
Schjønning, Per; Rasmussen, Karl J.; Munkholm, Lars J.; Nielsen, Peter S..

Distribution, Abundance and Diversity of Fungal Entomopathogens: Foundations for Conservation Biological Control Organic Eprints
Meyling, Nicolai V..
Conservation biological control (CBC) is a pest management strategy in which farming management practices are adopted to enhance the living conditions for specific natural enemies of pests with the specific objective to suppress pest populations. Research in CBC strategies have mostly focused on provisioning of good living conditions for arthropod predators and parasitoids, usually ignoring entomopathogens as regulators of pest populations. Fungal entomopathogens are widespread in agro-ecosystems and infect a range of arthropod pests, and these fungi should therefore also be included in CBC. Knowledge of the ecology of indigenous populations of fungal entomopathogens is a prerequisite for the evaluation of their contributions to pest control and for...

Ranking the magnitude of crop and farming system effects on soil microbial biomass and genetic structure of bacterial communities Organic Eprints
Hartmann, Martin; Fliessbach, Andreas; Oberholzer, Hans-Rudolf; Widmer, Franco.
Biological soil characteristics such as microbial biomass, community structures, activities, and functions may provide important information on environmental and anthropogenic influences on agricultural soils. Diagnostic tools and detailed statistical approaches need to be developed for a reliable evaluation of these parameters, in order to allow classification and quantification of the magnitude of such effects. The DOK long-term agricultural field experiment was initiated in 1978 in Switzerland for the evaluation of organic and conventional farming practices. It includes three representative Swiss farming systems with biodynamic, bio-organic and conventional fertilization and plant protection schemes along with minerally fertilized and unfertilized...

Microbial Biomass and Numbers Organic Eprints
Fliessbach, A.; Widmer, F..
With growing concern about the protection of soil quality and biodiversity many countries have established regional and national programmes to monitor soil quality. This book reviews the theory and practice of a range of the various microbiological methods used within these programmes. The first section gives an overview of approaches to monitoring, evaluating and managing soil quality. The second section provides a practical handbook with detailed descriptions of the methods. The methods are described in chapters on soil microbial biomass and numbers, soil microbial activity, soil microbial diversity and community composition, and plant-microbe interactions and soil quality. Finally, a census is given of the main methods used in over 30 European...

Soil quality aspects of humid sandy loams as influenced by organic and conventional long-term management Organic Eprints
Schjønning, Per; Elmholt, Susanne; Munkholm, Lars J.; Debosz, Kasia.
The development of low-input farming systems requires knowledge of the extent to which management characteristics influence the soil as a habitat for micro-organisms and a medium for plant growth. This paper presents a study of long-term effects of organically and conventionally cultivated systems on a range of soil physical, chemical and biological characteristics in Denmark. Seven soils were included, falling into three groups (I¯III). Each group consists of an organically managed soil (Org) referenced by one or two conventionally managed soils (Conv) with the same soil type (sandy loam) and pedological history. All organically managed soils were dairy farm soils (H), which had been organically managed for 46, 47 and 40 years, respectively. They had...

Subsoil Compaction and Ways to Prevent It Organic Eprints
Van den Akker, J.J.H.; Schjønning, P..
Subsoil compaction affects all aspects of soil quality, and contrary to topsoil compaction it is persistent. Natural alleviation processes such as wetting/drying, freezing/thawing and biological activity including root growth decrease rapidly with depth. In compacted soil, these alleviation processes are moreover diminished because root growth and biological activity are reduced and soil water contents remain higher in compacted than in well-structured soil. Wheel loads are still increasing and, in consequence, the extent and severity of subsoil compaction. Sustainable soil management requires the uncompromising criterion that no subsoil compaction can be accepted. Consequently, only field traffic with wheel loads lower than the carrying capacity of the...

Leisen, Edmund.
Between April 2014 and March 2015 farm-gate balances of phosphorus and potassium have been calculated on 82 Organic Farms. Results as follow: An additional fertilization with phosphorus, at least on the long run, seems to be necessary to adjust negative phosphorus balances. Potassium also often shows negative balances, especially when leaching losses are considered. However, as long as the K-contents in the plants are high, additional potassium fertilization is not necessary, especially when aspects of animal nutrition are considered.

Mykorrhiza i landbruksjord Organic Eprints
Pommeresche, Reidun; Ruissen, T..

A long-term field experiment demonstrates the influence of tillage on the bacterial potential to produce soil structure-stabilizing agents such as exopolysaccharides and lipopolysaccharides Organic Eprints
Cania, Barbara; Vestergaard, Gisle; Krauss, Maike; Fliessbach, Andreas; Schloter, Michael; Schulz, Stefanie.
Background: Stable soil aggregates are essential for optimal crop growth and preventing soil erosion. However, tillage is often used in agriculture to loosen the soil, which disrupts the integrity of these aggregates. Soil aggregation can be enhanced by bacteria through their ability to produce exopolysaccharides and lipopolysaccharides. These compounds stabilize soil aggregates by “gluing” soil particles together. However, it has yet to be shown how tillage influences the bacterial potential to produce aggregate-stabilizing agents. Therefore, we sampled conventional and reduced tillage treatments at 0–10 cm, 10–20 cm and 20–50 cm from a long-term field trial in Frick, Switzerland. We compared the stable aggregate fraction of the soil and the bacterial...

Catch Crops in Organic Farming Systems without Livestock Husbandry - Model Simulations Organic Eprints
Müller, Dr. Torsten; Magid, Dr. Jakob; Jensen, Dr. Lars Stoumann; Nielsen, Dr. Niels Erik; Thorup-Kristensen, Dr. Kristian.
During the last years, an increasing number of stockless farms in Europe converted to organic farming practice without re-establishing a livestock. Due to the lack of animal manure as a nutrient input, the relocation and the external input of nutrients is limited in those organic cropping systems. The introduction of a one-year green manure fallow in a 4-year crop rotation, including clover-grass mixtures as a green manure crop is the classical strategy to solve at least some of the problems related to the missing livestock. The development of new crop rotations, including an extended use of catch crops and annual green manure (legumes) may be another possibility avoiding the economical loss during the fallow year. Modelling of the C and N turnover in...

Mikrobiologische Indikatoren der Bodenfruchtbarkeit in einem Zweikulturen-Nutzungssystem Organic Eprints
Raubuch, Markus; Pyttlik, Claudia; Jörgensen, Rainer Georg.
