The coastline of Eastern Africa is an area of great physical beauty, rich in living resources. Palm fringed beaches of white coral sand lead down to tranquil lagoons enclosed by spectacular coral reefs with their wealth of colourful fish, shells and corals. The area has vast mangrove forests, high coral cliffs, wide stretches of sand dunes, and numerous offshore and oceanic islands. Yet there are problems in paradise-pollution, habitat destruction, and the pressures of growing populations and tourism. To face these common threats to their marine environment, the nine nations of the region are now working together to manage their shared resources and to find regional solutions to their problems. They are doing this under the auspices of the Eastern African... |

This first issue is devoted to the use of indicators for ICAM, and is a direct result of the IOC-DFO-NOAA-CSMP International Workshop on the same topic, organised in May 2002, in Ottawa. Based on a background paper prepared by the Center for the Study of Marine Policy (University of Delaware) in preparation for the workshop, the aim of this Reference Guide is to present a literature review on the use of indicators around the world, from various programmes and projects, at global, regional, national and local scale. The need for indicators and reporting techniques which reflects the performance of coastal management projects and programmes and reveals the complex relationship that exist between coastal ecosystem health and anthropogenic activities,... |

The Conference of Brussels, called in 1853, was the first International Maritime Conference ever held. It sponsored the idea that Governments should foster systematic weather observations on ships, and should prepare and publish charts of the prevailing winds, ocean currents, average sea and air temperatures, and tracks of dangerous storms based on the additional data. With the introduction of radio and fast ships, weather information became of vital importance to safe and efficient ship operation. Many countries began regularly scheduled weather forecasts to ships in nearby waters. Today, weather forecasts as well as charts arc prepared from data collected through ship observations. Forecasts of weather and sea conditions arc prepared for ship operation,... |

This paper presents a synthesis of mainly published information relating to the cetaceans of the Indian Ocean Sanctuary (IOS). It highlights a number of new studies and other initiatives linked to the Sanctuary and reviews the current understanding of the biology of the Sanctuary’s cetaceans. Cetaceans in the IOS are exposed to a range of threats, including by-catch and the effects of climate change. Whilst no quantification can be made of these threats at this time, they may still be significant for the conservation of populations. The role of the IOS in stimulating research to further establish the status of cetacean populations is acknowledged. |
