The number of purse seiners active in the western Indian Ocean average 41 during the fourth quarter compared to 49 vessels during the same period last year. Fishing activity was high during the first half of the year with a record of 54 vessels present in February and March. The overall fishing results for the year were not as good as those previously recorded in the last three years. Catch rates averaged 16MT/day compared to 18 MT/day in 1989 and 22 MT/day in 1988, attaining a similar level to results of 1986. This was due to poor fishing conditions during January to May causing several vessels to leave the Indian Ocean in June. However this situation changed as catch rates improved during the second half of the year, with exceptionally high yellow... |

The number of purse seiners active in the Western Indian Ocean peaked to an all times high for the first quarter of 1990 ranging from 50 in January to 53 in March. This represents an increase over the same period last year when an average of 48 vessels was in operation. Fishing results were rather poor throughout the first quarter of this year. Catch rates increased only slightly from a low of 8.18 mt/day in December 1989 to 16.7 mt/day in March 1990. The proportion of yellow fin in the catch however increased considerably from 39% in December to 67% in February 1990, with a corresponding decrease in the proportion of skipjack in the catch. This is usual for this time of the years when yellow fin is the predominant species. The fishing pattern was... |

The number of purse seiners active in the Western Indian Ocean during the fourth quarter of 1985 increased from 36 in October to 38 in December, about ten vessels less than in the fourth quarter of 1984. Fishing success during the fourth quarter of 1985 was similar to the third quarter, and slightly better than the fourth quarter last year. Since commercial purse seiner operations began in 1982, catch rates have been high during the first quarter, then have declined progressively during the second and third quarters due to weather conditions of the Inter-Monsoon and the Southeast Monsoon periods. This year, however, catch rates during the first quarter were low, due largely to bad weather, then remained at roughly the same level for the second quarter,... |

Data used to generate the tables and figures presented here are based on daily catch and effort forms (logbooks) returned from fishing vessels that are licensed to fish in the Seychelles EEZ and for purse seiners, as well as from data collected via the tuna sampling programme conducted during transhipment in Port Victoria. Sometimes there are delays in these being received at SFA, especially for longliners that often spend up to a year at sea. For purse seiners the delays are usually during and just after the second quarter of the year when most vessels are fishing in the Mozambique Channel and are not necessarily using Port Victoria for transhipment. Readers should note that many of the figures presented here are subject to revision (usually upwards) as... |

The number of purse seiners active in the Western Indian Ocean during the third quarter of 1988 increased from 38 at the end of the second quarter to 43 in July, reaching a maximum of 46 in September. This represents a considerable increase in the number of active vessels compared to the same period last year when a maximum of 38 vessels were in operation in September. Overall catch rates increased from 19 MT/day during the second quarter of 1988 to 25 MT/day during this quarter, reaching the same level as in the previous year. The proportion of yellow fin dropped from 53% in July to 17% in September with a corresponding increase in skipjack catches. This fishing pattern follows the same trend set in previous years, as vessels fished around the Equator... |

The number of purse seiners active in the Western Indian Ocean during the third quarter of 1989 increased from 46 vessels in June to 48 in July reaching an all-time high of 51 in September. The highest number of vessels previously recorded for this fishery was 49, between December 1984 to February 1985, and in early 1989. During the same period last year a maximum of 46 vessels were in operation.Poor fishing results obtained during the second quarter continued throughout July and August, with daily catch rates averaging 11-13 MT. In September, however, fishing success improved considerably with catch rates rising to 26.5 MT/day, nearly reaching the level obtained (30 MT/day during the same period last year. Skipjack remained the predominant species in... |

Ayache, F.. |
Sebkha is a North African vernacular name for a shallow, salty depression. It is a common wetland type especially in semi-arid and arid climates but less so in sub-humid climates. In Tunisia, about 80 wetlands of this type stretch from north to south, most of them located within a short distance of the coast although not usually connected to the sea. They play a major hydrological role in stocking flood waters, recharging and/or discharging groundwater and are prime habitats for a diverse and typical fauna and flora thus generating many benefits to local communities and society as a whole. |

The number of purse seiners active in the Western Indian Ocean during the second quarter of 1989, remained at 47 in April and May, dropping to 46 in June. This represents a significant increase in the number of vessels compared to same period last year, when an average of 38 vessels were in operation. Fishing results obtained during the second quarter were mediocre compared to the exceptionally high catches made at the beginning of the year. Record catch rates averaging 26 mt/day during the first quarter dropped from 20 mt/day in April to a mere 9 mt/day in May. These results are however not unusual for this time of the year. Daily catch rates for the second quarter averaged 16 mt/day, reaching the same level as in 1987, whereas 18 mt/day was reported... |
