| This study was the first to be undertaken since 1901, since when natural and industrial changes had occurred to affect the habitat. Observations are reported here for the banks of the north and south shores, using certain points as reference. Features of the 2 shores are described, and an inventory given of the fauna of the banks. Hydrozoan Cnidaria, Bryozoans, Annelids, Molluscs, Crustacea and fish are listed with notes, and particular attention is given to the crabs found (Rhithropanopeus harrisii tridentatus). The monthly distribution of crab sizes and sexes is given, and the species of animals found in association with crabs is shown to vary according to the site studied. | Confusion has arisen over the nomenclature of certain fish of the family Centracanthidia, because of the colour variations due to sexual dichromatism, sexual inversions, protogynous hermaphroditism, and seasonal modifications according to the stage of maturity. A historical survey of nomenclature is presented for species described under the genera Maena, Smaris and Spicara, the last being the most recent. | The Portuguese oyster (Crassostrea angulata) and the sea-squirt Ciona intestinalis are both filter-feeders and compete for space in the oyster beds. Valve movement in oysters and shortening and elongation in Ciona were recorded on a smoked drum. Oysters showed a slow (3 one half min) spontaneous opening/closing rhythm, which was speeded up by stimulatory (vitamin) substances and increased in amplitude by toxic accumulated waste substances, or sudden change in temperature. Ciona showed a regular contraction rhythm of similar to 1 min and single sharp shortening after a strong light stimulus or a food particle touch stimulus to the oral tentacles. | Measurements in the strait of Gibraltar during the last fifteen years have shown the existence of large internal waves propagating at the interface between the upper layer of Atlantic water and the lower layer of Mediterranean water. These waves are generated by the tidal currents running over the sill. The scale of the phenomena are such that non linear variations of the flow in the strait as a fonction of the tidal amplitude can be expected. Specifically, mean Mediterranean outflow over a tidal period should be expected to increase going from neap to spring tides. | French fishermen have been fishing porbeagle shark Lamna nasus on the edges of the continental shelf, from the Bay of Biscay to the south of Ireland. Incidentally, until the past few years, when, during summer, bluefin tunas Thunnus thynnus, albacores Thunnus alalunga and sworfishes Xiphias gladius were caught on the same line. | Detailed investigation of a portion of the sea-floor off the French Riviera serves to detail the history of the Algéro-Provençal Basin. The chemical composition and physical properties of sediments and the stratigraphy and structural framework are considered together. Both stratigraphy and structural framework of the sedimentary cover are examined by means of deep drilling, coring and seismic reflection. It appears that the unconsolidated sedimentary cover of the continental slope is Plio-Quaternary in age. This cover displays abundant slumping structures which have resulted from contemporaneous tectonic movements. | A member of the genus Fauveliopsis (Annelida Polychaeta flabelligeridae) was discovered in different stations of the western Mediterranean abyssal plain. Already known in the northern Atlantic Ocean, this species most probably exists in the northern Pacific Ocean as well. Its abundance in the western Mediterranean Sea leads us to review a number of notions on the absence of a real abyssal fauna in this sea and on the extreme paucity of the deep plain between 2 000 and 3 000 m. |

| Representative species of the families Pleuronectidae, Bothidae and Soleidae were studied throughout the year. Changes are described which were seen in the ovaries, and photographs of cross sections of the tissue are shown. The progress of egg release was noted, and in some cases correlated studies were made of gonadal changes in male. The period of egg release was prolonged over 1 one half -2 months for plaice and turbot, and for 6 months for sole. Individual fish showed these extended periods of laying, and the actual months of the year differed for each species. | Five techniques are currently used in tuna fishery worldwide. They are, in order of appearance, fixed net (madrague), mobile line, living bait, ring net (seine) and longline. The efficiency of these different methods is variable, but it has been observed that those impacting on the behaviour of the fish or of the shoals (bait boats and seiners) show better performances. Madragues are indeed positioned in spots known to fishermen to be on bluefins (Thunnus thynnus) migratory roads. |

| In a recent note (Mauffret et al, in press) we described the extension of the acoustic basement south of the Balearic mainland. One series of arguments (position, morphology, and magnetism) led us to advance the hypothesis that the acoustic basement represents a prolongation of the Balearic continental basement towards the south at least as far as 38' 30'N latitude. The prolongation appears to be marked by a large topographic rise between the 1000 and 2600 meter isobaths. | Lors de travaux antérieurs, en nous inspirant principalement des résultats de Galtzoff chez Crassostrea virginica nous avons mis en évidence l'importance de l'activité larvaire chez l'huître au cours d'études expérimentales chez Crassostrea angulata et plus récemment chez C. gigas. C'est ainsi que nous avons mis au point et utilisé en laboratoire un dispositif simple qui nous a permis de rechercher les limites de tolérance de l'huître portugaise à la salinité, ou d'étudier son comportement en milieu confiné, avec dans ce dernier cas, description des symptômes d'intoxication. De même nous avons pu enregistrer sur notre appareillage les myogrammes particuliers qui accompagnent l'émission des produits sexuels. |
