| Five spp of Echeneididae are presently known in the Mediterranean: Echeneis naucrates L., Remora remora (L.), R. brachyptera (Lowe), R. australis (Benn) and Rhombochirus osteochir (Cuv). All of them may now be reported from the area comprising the Ligurian and the Tyrrhenian seas. Many mistakes occurred in the past, chiefly concerning R. remora a name too often wrongly applied to different spp. Echeneis holbrooki from the gulf of Genoa is really E. naucrates. Only 2 specimens of R. brachyptera were found, both in Sicilian waters. R. australis is here recorded from the Tyrrhenian sea. | The different hypotheses proposed for the creation of the Bay of Biscay are reviewed. New geological and geophysical data collected in the last two years in the Bay and in the Pyrenean domain give new insight into the tectogenesis of the Pyrenees. Geological data of the Pyrenean area provide tight constraints on the hypothesis of formation of the Bay. The most probable hypothesis is an opening by rotation of the Iberian Peninsula around a pole of rotation situated near Paris, which resulted in strike-slip motion dong the North Pyrenean fault during the Upper Mesozoic. A progressive westward migration of the pole initiated in the late Cretaceous blocked the motion dong the fault and led to the main Eocene tectogenetic Pyrenean phase. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

| Between 1955 and 1972, La Rochelle's trawlers caught three species of Gempylidae : Nesiarchus nasutus, Johnson, 1862 (2 spec.), Promethichthys prometheus (Cuvier, 1832) (1 spec.) and Ruvettus pretiosus, Cocco, 1829 (5 spec.). The author notes that it is for the first time that P. prometheus is recorded in the Bay of Biscay. He also notes that in the Bay of Biscay all the N. nasutus are caught between January and July while the R. pretiosus are caught between August and December. |

| King scallop production in Japan enjoys a wonderful evolution one would like to find in other exploited marine species. In the Bay of Mutsu, one of the main exploitation centres, the production went from 430 t in 1963 to 6 000 t in 1969 and to about 40 000 t in 1972. Responsible for this development is an original method of spat collection, supplying the suspended cultures and the seabed seedings: the animal biology is taken into account. During its juvenile stages, it looks for a substrate for its metamorphosis, gets a hold of it thanks to a byssus, and stays for a few months before developing its benthic animal behaviour. | This cruise of the "Cryos» enabled us, based on our observations on the biology of the cod stocks, the thermic environment and the catches, to explain the situation of the fishery in the gulf of the Saint-Laurent and on the southern banks of Newfoundland, from January to March 1973. Our best catches were made in the Banquereau area and especially in the gulf of the Saint-Laurent. | Two international research cruises on board of the research vessel 'Ichthys' the first one in Aug-Sept 1971, and the second other in June-July 1972, have shown the reproduction of Thunnus thynnus, T.alalunga, Auxis thazard and Sarda in the surroundings of the Balearic Islands. The observations were made on the planctonic stages of these spp and on the physico-chemical and biological conditions of the environment. Some data were also collected on the presence of juvenile or mature stages of these fishes and on their fishery. |
