Effect of electrolyzed oxidizing water on the control of postharvest diseases in tropical fruíts Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Rodríguez-Pereida,Carolina; González-Estrada,Ramsés Ramón; Blancas-Benítez,Francisco Javier; Velázquez-Estrada,Rita María; Hernández-Montiel,Luis Guillermo; Gutiérrez-Martínez,Porfirio.
Abstract Electrolyzed oxidizing water is an eco-friendly emerging technology considered as a novel broad-spectrum sanitizer. The efficacy of electrolyzed oxidizing water against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Fusarium oxysporum, and Penicillium italicum at different concentrations of free chlorine (0.5, 1, 6, 12, and 30 ppm) was evaluated. The results showed that at concentrations of 6, 12, and 30 ppm of free chlorine the mycelial growth, sporulation and germination process were totally inhibited in the strains tested. The inoculated fruit application of treatments by applying 30 ppm of free chlorine presented the best results for fungus control on artificially inoculated banana, papaya, and Persian lime fruits. The fruit quality (weight loss, TSS, pH,...

Balanced cytokine-producing pattern in mice immunized with an avirulent Trypanosoma cruzi Anais da ABC (AABC)
Soares,Milena B. P.; Gonçalves,Renata; Pyrrho,Alexandre S.; Costa,Deise A.; Paiva,Claudia N.; Gattass,Cerli R..
We have previously demonstrated that inoculation of BALB/c mice with trypomastigotes of CL-14, an avirulent Trypanosoma cruzi clone, prevents the development of parasitemia and mortality after challenge with virulent CL strain. In this report, we investigated the cytokine and antibody profiles induced by inoculation with CL-14 clone. Groups of mice were inoculated with trypomastigotes of CL-14 clone and challenged with infective CL strain. Challenged CL-14-inoculated mice had lower levels of IFN-g and higher production of IgG1 antibodies as compared to CL strain-infected mice. Previous inoculation with CL-14 clone partially prevented the suppression of IL-2 production caused by CL strain infection. No significant...

Protection of Grid Connected Photovoltaic Systems (GCPVS) BABT
Silva,Jardel Eugenio da; Gouveia,Danilo Carvalho de; Urbanetz Junior,Jair.
ABSTRACT Installations of photovoltaic systems connected or not to the electrical network have become increasingly popular, but it is often carried out by unqualified people using low quality components. The present study aims to describe the methodology adopted for the protection of grid connected photovoltaic systems (GCPVS) and the implications caused by their lack. Photovoltaic modules are typically installed in galvanized, painted, stainless aluminum or steel structures, which must be connected to a common ground, as these structures and any other components of the system could be energized by the photovoltaic array and may cause serious injuries or even death during routine maintenance, these fatalities can still result in ramifications for the...

Ischemic preconditioning vs adenosine vs prostaglandin E1 for protection against liver ischemia/reperfusion injury BJMBR
Radojkovic,M.; Stojanovic,M.; Stanojevic,G.; Radojkovic,D.; Gligorijevic,J.; Ilic,I.; Stojanovic,N..
Ischemia/reperfusion injury is still a major cause of morbidity and mortality during liver surgery and transplantation. A variety of surgical and pharmacological therapeutic strategies have been investigated to minimize the effects of ischemia/reperfusion. The aim of our study was to analyze and compare preventive influences of ischemic preconditioning, adenosine and prostaglandin E1 in the experimental model of hepatic ischemia/reperfusion injury. Adult chinchilla rabbits were divided into four groups: 10 rabbits subjected to liver ischemic preconditioning (3-min period of inflow occlusion followed by a 5-min period of reperfusion) followed by 45 min of Pringle maneuver; 10 rabbits subjected to pre-treatment with intraportal injection of adenosine...

Volatile cardioplegia: fast normothermic cardiac arrest induction and recovery with halothane in isolated rat hearts BJMBR
To study the effect of halothane as a cardioplegic agent, ten Wistar rats were anesthetized by ether inhalation and their hearts were perfused in a Langendorff system with Krebs-Henseleit solution (36oC; 90 cm H2O pressure). After a 15-min period for stabilization the control values for heart rate, force (T), dT/dt and coronary flow were recorded and a halothane-enriched solution (same temperature and pressure) was perfused until cardiac arrest was obtained. The same Krebs-Henseleit solution was reperfused again and the parameters studied were recorded after 1, 3, 5, 10, 20 and 30 min. Cardiac arrest occurred in all hearts during the first two min of perfusion with halothane-bubbled solution. One minute after reperfusion without halothane, the following...

DNA vaccines for viral diseases BJMBR
Donnelly,J.J.; Ulmer,J.B..
DNA plasmids encoding foreign proteins may be used as immunogens by direct intramuscular injection alone, or with various adjuvants and excipients, or by delivery of DNA-coated gold particles to the epidermis through biolistic immunization. Antibody, helper T lymphocyte, and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) responses have been induced in laboratory and domesticated animals by these methods. In a number of animal models, immune responses induced by DNA vaccination have been shown to be protective against challenge with various infectious agents. Immunization by injection of plasmids encoding foreign proteins has been used successfully as a research tool. This review summarizes the types of DNA vaccine vectors in common use, the immune responses and protective...

Clearance-inducing antibodies are responsible for protection against the acute phase of Trypanosoma cruzi infection in mice BJMBR
Umekita,L.F.; Ramos,D.P.; Mota,I..
A study was conducted on mice infected with strains Y and CL of Trypanosoma cruzi. The ability of anti-Y and anti-CL sera to induce complement-mediated lysis, immune clearance and protection against the acute phase of the infection was studied using homologous anti-Y or anti-CL serum tested with the Y or CL strain, or heterologous anti-Y serum tested with the CL strain or anti-CL serum tested with the Y strain. Complement-mediated lysis was induced by both homologous and heterologous antisera but protection was afforded only by homologous antisera. Immune clearance was induced by homologous but not by heterologous antisera. Antisera with high clearance ability were able to confer protection whereas antisera with high lytic ability were not. These results...
