This paper deals with the prognosis of the individual volumetric growth of Eucalyptus species in the Brazilian South Region. It was accomplished in a fertilizer trial with Eucalyptus dunnii and a competition trial among species (E. bicostata, E. “cambiju” - natural hybrid, E. deanei and E. viminalis) implanted in Vila Velha, PR. The method of successive regressions, modified to the exponential form, including the volume at three years of age and survival was applied. The results gave evidence of acceptable efficiency of the method to estimate individual volumetric growth of the trees of the stands, especially for E. deanei and E. dunnii, species well adapted to the region. However, species with low growth potential, for example E. bicostata, presented low... |

The tribe Attini (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) comprises 14 genera with approximately 230 described ant species, which are engaged in an obligate mutualism with fungi. The fungus is cultivated inside their colonies, using a variety of organic material as substrate. The fungus is used as food by the ants, and in return, the ants nourish, protect, and disperse their fungal cultivars. Although all species of this tribe cultivate fungi, attine ants are quite heterogeneous in relation to agricultural system, colony size and social structure, substrate preparation behavior, foraging behavior, etc. Agriculture, symbiosis and natural history traits of fungus-farming ants are discussed in this review, as well as future research directions. |

In 1979 the technique of modeling diameter distributions by probabilistic functions was first applied for Hyink & Moser in forecasting growth and production of uneven aged and heterogeneous forests. However, today few studies use this method for planning the production in these forests for not knowing the operational feasibility of the technique. Therefore this paper presents a review of the characteristics that allow the modeling of growth and yield by diameter class, highlighting the importance of the dynamics of recruitment, mortality, survival, and population of attributes related to the modeling of Weibull distribution, with the specific statistics used in the modeling of yield by this method.doi: 10.4336/2012.pfb.32.70.93 |

Spatial modeling of forest fire risk has the aim to determine areas most susceptible to fire based on variables that represent facility of ignition and propagation. This work developed a forest fire risk map for the Municipality of Inhambupe, Bahia State, Brazil, by elaborating thematic maps of the following variables: road system, population density, land occupation and use, watershed network, slope and aspect. These were evaluated by the analytic hierarchy process and integrated with map algebra. Based on the developed model, 75.46% of the studied area was classified as “high”, “very high” and “extreme high” fire risk. When comparing the forest fire risk map with historical data of burned areas, 95% of the fires were in these areas. |

Arbuscular mycorrhizae microscopy requires differential staining of typical structures. Dyes employed, such as trypan blue, pose risks to health and environment. Alternative dyes such as pen ink and aniline have variable coloring efficiency. In this work, Brachiaria decumbens roots, discolored with caustic soda (NaOH), were stained with açai, annatto, saffron, trypan blue and pen inks. There were significant differences among dyes regarding stained mycorrhizal structures and pictures quality. Acai was considered the best alternative dye, with similar results to trypan blue. |

The Araucaria Forest (AF) once covered 37% of State of Parana, but nowadays less than 1% of mature AF was left. Besides being one of the most threatened Brazilian ecosystems, the AF is also poorly studied. So, the main objective of the present study was to contribute with the knowledge and conservation of Parana state mammals, focusing on AF species. The field study was conducted in the Embrapa Florestas property (25º19’ S – 49º09’ W), that has 301 ha of which 105 ha are covered by disturbed primary AF and the other 196 ha by secondary AF forests and forest plantations. Mammalian records were made twice a week between April 2003 and February 2004 employing direct and indirect methods including visual observations, analysis of vestiges, collection of dead,... |
