The Research Unit Marine and Coastal Geomorphology of the University of Ghent has been involved for 15 years in research projects dealing with the genesis, the present-day morphodynamics and sediment dynamics and the maintenance mechanisms of sandbanks. Such a research has, in addition to the scientific value, several applications in the field of offshore engineering, management of natural resources, coastal protection and environment policy, which are discussed in the present paper. |

Although extensive fundamental research has been performed on the brine shrimp, the yields from hatching and culturing this organism which is widely used in mariculture, can be greatly improved. By exposing the immersed cysts to light and by using a new type of hatching cylinder and separator box, greater hatching and separation efficiencies can be obtained. Controlled mass culture of brine shrimp larvae to the adult stage has been extremely difficult until now; the literature on the subject is reviewed and a new technique of high density culturing at the pilot-stage is described. |

The main processes that determine the behaviour of heavy metals in the Scheldt estuary are tidal hydrodynamics, sediment transport, and sorption of heavy metals on suspended matter. The water quality model WASP is applied to simulate the spatial distribution of five heavy metals in the estuary, under average hydrodynamic and suspended sediment transport regimes. First, the hydrodynamical part of the model is constructed and the results are verified by comparison with measured water levels and flow velocities. Secondly, a salt transport model is set up in order to evaluate the hydrodynamical dispersive mixing characteristics. Thirdly, a suspended sediment transport model is constructed and finally a transport model for heavy metals. The simulated... |

Polysiphonia banyulensis nov. sp. (section Oligosiphonia) is a species with four pericentral cells, without any cortication. The isolated erect thalii have pseudodichotomous ramifications that are markedly narrower at their base: they originate in the axils of trichoblasts. These are very large and are characterized by the very large sub-basal cell. The phyllotaxis of the trichoblasts is 1/4 but the number of segments that occur between two trichoblasts is variable. The tetraspores occur isolated or in two contiguous segments in the upper half of the thallus. The male and female gametophytes are still unknown. Collected at Banyuls-sur-Mer, Pyrénées-Orientales, France in July 1974. |

Assimilation levels of the antibacterials trimethoprim (TMP) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) fry tissue administered orally were investigated. A 1:5 TMP and SMX combination incorporated in oil emulsion (Selco) at 20% and 40% concentrations (w/w) were bioencapsulated in Artemia (Instar II) nauplii. Chemotherapeutics-loaded ('medicated') nauplii were fed to the sea bass fry and drug concentration in the tissue were analysed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Fish fed 40% 'medicated' Artemia assimilated significantly higher levels of chemotherapeutics compared with those fed 20% 'medicated' Artemia . Chemotherapeutics given at 40% reached... |

Mangalocypria, a new genus of the tribe Thalassocypridini, is described, with a new species, and two previously described species, from Papua New Guinea, the Comoros and Indonesia. The new genus has a remarkable set of characters separating it from other members in the tribe: thin-shelled, translucent and smooth valves, V-process of lower lip developed as a rake, and postero- distal claw of furca fixed to shaft without a joint. The affinities of Mangalocypria gen. nov. with other genera is discussed, and some taxonomical problems in the tribe Thalassocypridini are commented upon. The diagnostic value of incompletely differentiated Zenker organs of premature males is discussed. |

Short-term treatment with peroxide solutions has been tested as a chemical way to break the diapause of Artemia cysts of different species and geographical strains. The methodology was further standardized by analyzing the impact of the cyst hydration level and the application conditions (concentration, duration, temperature) on the hatching percentage. The peroxide treatment was most effective in deactivating diapause when applied on fully hydrated cysts, and showed a quantitative nature: a maximal positive effect was obtained for specific combinations of peroxide concentration and exposure time. The peroxide effect was preserved after processing and storage of treated cysts. The biochemical mechanisms possibly involved in induction and... |

Because bleaching powder is the cheapest source of hypochlorite in many countries of the world, a decapsulation procedure has been worked out in which technical calciumhypochlorite Ca(OCl)2 is utilized.A standard procedure has been developed for the deactivation of the chlorine residues adsorbed on the decapsulated cysts. Proper dehydration and storage of the decapsulated cysts assure maximum viability of the embryos in diapause. A prototype system for routine decapsulation and processing of large quantities of cysts is proposed.Beneficial effects of the decapsulation process on both the hatching percentage and the individual dry weight of the hatched nauplii are discussed in detail. |

The species Darwinula stevensoni is extensively redescribed. Morphological variability of both valves and soft parts is assessed in several geographical and climatically distant populations and is found to be minimal or non-existant. Only size significantly varies between populations and this can be attributed to the differences in ambient temperatures during the larval development. Number and shape of muscle scars also vary, but this both within and between populations. Valve shape and chaetotaxy of limbs are remarkably constant. One female from an Italian population has aberrant Mx2-palps, but this specimen is considered a teratological case. Earlier records of males of D. stevensoni and the taxonomic position of the... |
