The India-France SARAL/AltiKa mission is the first Ka-band altimetric mission dedicated primarily to oceanography. The mission objectives were firstly the observation of the oceanic mesoscales but also global and regional sea level monitoring, including the coastal zone, data assimilation, and operational oceanography. SARAL/AltiKa proved also to be a great opportunity for inland waters applications, for observing ice sheet or icebergs, as well as for geodetic investigations. The mission ended its nominal phase after three years in orbit and began a new phase (drifting orbit) in July 2016. The objective of this paper is to highlight some of the most remarkable achievements of the SARAL/AltiKa mission in terms of scientific applications. Compared to the...

Reproductive Biology of Albacore Tuna (Thunnus alalunga) in the Western Indian Ocean ArchiMer
Dhurmeea, Zahirah; Zudaire, Iker; Chassot, Emmanuel; Cedras, Maria; Nikolic, Natacha; Bourjea, Jerome; West, Wendy; Appadoo, Chandani; Bodin, Nathalie.
The reproductive biology of albacore tuna, Thunnus alalunga, in the western Indian Ocean was examined through analysis of the sex ratio, spawning season, length-at-maturity (L50), spawning frequency and fecundity. From 2013 to 2015, a total of 923 female and 867 male albacore were sampled. A bias in sex ratio was found in favor of females with fork length (LF) < 100 cm. Using histological analyses and gonadosomatic index, spawning was found to occur between 10°S and 30°S, mainly to the east of Madagascar from October to January. Large females contributed more to reproduction through their longer spawning period compared to small individuals. The L50 (mean ± standard error) of female albacore was estimated at 85.3 ± 0.7 cm LF. Albacore spawn on average...

Theret, Francois.
IFREMER aims at digitalizing trawl gear in order to reach two goals: on the one hand, participating in the realisation of a computer assisted trawl conception software; on the other hand, being able to study quickly and easily the influence of different adjustment parameters on the shape of the trawl in order to indicate to the skipper, if possible in real time, the optimal adjustment for the conditions he's in. From an international point of view, there are only two strategies to approach this problem: - the first strategy is based on statistical studies on the existing nets (almost limited to their reproduction on different scales), but this approach does not leave much room for innovation as it can only be applied to the same type of nets as those that...

Blanchet, F.; Soyeux, E.; Deutsch, J.-c.; De Roeck, Yann-herve.

Clam culture is a shellfish farming activity that has now entered a phase that will determine its future. After the first experimental trials and pilot projects, private investors have set this new aquaculture activity in motion. Today, the progress of clam production is conditioned, in part, on public authorities and financial organisations. On what basis should decisions be made so that appropriate choices are made for the development of clam culture, while respecting other users of coastal areas? This financial and economic study of clam culture seeks to give an overview of current clam farming by analysing operations that have entered the production phase. This approach to productivity of this activity will be done using classical financial analysis...

Truchot, J; Jouve, D.
Oxygen consumption of juvenile prawns, Penaeus japonicus , was measured during the day at 4 temperatures (23, 26, 30 and 33 degree C) and at various oxygenation levels. For inactive prawns burrowed into sand, respiratory metabolism was maintained almost constant in hypoxia above a critical oxygen pressure of about 30-40 Torr. Data analysis according to a hyperbolic model indicates that the capacity for metabolic regulation was optimal between 26 and 30 degree C. Prawns acclimated 1-2 weeks at 20 degree C in moderate hypoxia (P sub(O2) around 50-55 Torr) showed a reinforced regulation of oxygen consumption when compared to normoxic controls.

Derolez, Valerie; Fiandrino, Annie; Munaron, Dominique; Cadoret, Marine.

Use of passive and active tracers in the biogeochemical-3D hydrodynamical ECO-MARS3D model to assess the role of river inputs on coastal zone of France, British Channel and southern North Sea ArchiMer
Dussauze, Morgan; Menesguen, Alain; Dumas, Franck.
Two techniques of tracking are compared for delineating the marine area impacted by a river plume. The first one uses a simple conservative tracer released in the river during a several year long period: the probability density function of the tracer concentration in each mesh of the model is used to map 3 characteristic descriptors of the freshwater influence (10%, 50% and 90% percentiles). The second one uses a signature of the river attached to a state variable of a biogeochemical model (e.g. the Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen components), which can be followed in space and time in the various nitrogenous state variables. Departure between the two methods increases when tracking of nitrogen is considered in biogeochemical forms more and more distant from...

Peripatric speciation drives diversification and distributional pattern of reef Hermit Crabs (Decapoda: Diogenidae: Calcinus) ArchiMer
Malay, Maria Celia (machel) D.; Paulay, Gustav.
The diversity on coral reefs has long captivated observers. We examine the mechanisms of speciation, role of ecology in speciation, and patterns of species distribution in a typical reef-associated clade-the diverse and colorful Calcinus hermit crabs-to address the origin of tropical marine diversity. We sequenced COI, 16S, and H3 gene regions for similar to 90% of 56 putative species, including nine undescribed, "cryptic" taxa, and mapped their distributions. Speciation in Calcinus is largely peripatric at remote locations. Allopatric species pairs are younger than sympatric ones, and molecular clock analyses suggest that > 2 million years are needed for secondary sympatry. Substantial niche conservatism is evident within clades, as well as a few major...

Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) infesting cattle and some other domestic and wild hosts on the French Mediterranean island of Corsica ArchiMer
Grech-angelini, Sebastien; Stachurski, Frederic; Lancelot, Renaud; Boissier, Jerome; Allienne, Jean-francois; Marco, Sylvain; Maestrini, Oscar; Uilenberg, Gerrit.
Background: Corsica is a mountainous French island in the north-western Mediterranean presenting a large diversity of natural environments where many interactions between domestic animals and wild fauna occur. Despite a favourable context for ticks and tick-borne diseases (TBDs), the tick fauna of Corsica has not systematically been investigated. Methods: For one year (May 2014-May 2015), a survey of ticks infesting cattle was performed in the three Corsican cattle slaughterhouses. Two of these were visited monthly and one quarterly; the ticks were manually collected, just after flaying. Ticks were identified on their morphology; when necessary, some specimens were also molecularly identified by sequencing mitochondrial cox1 (cytochrome c oxidase subunit...

Tectonic regime controls clustering of deformation bands in porous sandstone ArchiMer
Soliva, Roger; Ballas, Gregory; Fossen, Haakon; Philit, Sven.
Porous sandstones tend to deform by the formation of low-permeability deformation bands that influence fluid flow in reservoir settings. The bands may be distributed or localized into clusters, and limited recent data suggest that tectonic regime may exert control on their distribution and clustering. In order to explore this suggestion, we performed a synthetic analysis based of 73 sets of bands, including 22 new sets measured for a reverse Andersonian regime that fill the important gap in data for this context. We find a surprisingly strong correlation between clustering and tectonic regime, where bands clearly are more distributed in the reverse regime compared to the normal regime. Together with the observed band distributions, capillary pressure data...

The market for fresh sole and its importance in northern french fisheries ArchiMer
Ioannidis, Chris; Lantz, Frederic.
(Not controled OCR) Sole is a species whose market has been expanding steadily since the end of the 70's ; landings have doubled, from 4097t in 1979 to 8048t in 1987. In real terms (1980=100) the value of landings has increased from FF124 m to FF265 m over the same period. One must appreciate that the importance of fresh sole lies in its high valuation. Despite the fact that the species occupies no more than 1.66% of total landings in terms of weight, in value terms exceeds 8.5% of the total, making sole the third most valuable species in France. Sole is consumed essentialy fresh and its price to the consumer does not therefore depend on any transformation process. It depends solely on demand and supply (domestic landings...

Warming of surface waters in the mid-latitude North Atlantic during Heinrich events ArchiMer
Naafs, B. D. A.; Hefter, J.; Grutzner, J.; Stein, R..
During the six Heinrich events of the last 70 kyr, episodic calving from the circum-Atlantic ice sheets released large numbers of icebergs into the North Atlantic. These icebergs and associated meltwater flux are hypothesized to have led to a shutdown of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation and severe cooling in large parts of the Northern Hemisphere. However, due to the limited availability of high-resolution records, the magnitude of sea surface temperature (SST) changes related to the impact of Heinrich events on the midlatitude North Atlantic is poorly constrained. Here we present a record of U-37(K)-based SSTs derived from sediments of Integrated Ocean Drilling Project Site U1313, located at the southern end of the ice-rafted debris (IRD) belt...
