Abnormal mortality outbreaks occurred in the majority of Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) producing areas in France in 2008 during the summer period. These outbreaks were usually sudden and severe (up to 100%) and affected essentially spat (oysters less than 1 year-old) and juveniles (12 to 18 month-old oysters). Crassostrea gigas was the single affected species Mortality outbreaks were first observed from mid May to mid June in Brittany, Vendée, Charente Maritime and Mediterranean coast A second episode of massive mortality events was reported at the end of June and the beginning of July. All oyster production sites were affected except some particular locations including Arcachon Bay and Brittany. Mortality occurred latter in Arcachon Bay in August.... |

The life histories of oysters in the genus Crassostrea, like those of most marine bivalves, are typified by high fecundity and low survival in nature. Rearing conditions in hatcheries however ensure optimized density, diet, and temperature. Hatcheries are becoming increasingly important for the production of juveniles in aquaculture, and their culture practices often include culling of slow growing larvae to reduce and synchronize the time taken to reach settlement. Because previous studies have found substantial genetic variation for early life developmental traits in Crassostrea gigas, these culling practices are likely to cause highly different selective pressures in hatcheries from those in the natural environment. We studied the phenotypic and genetic... |

DNA sequence polymorphism and codon usage bias were investigated in a set of 41 nuclear loci in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas. Our results revealed a very high level of DNA polymorphism in oysters, in the order of magnitude of the highest levels reported in animals to date. A total of 290 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were detected, 76 of which being localised in exons and 214 in non-coding regions. Average density of SNPs was estimated to be one SNP every 60 bp in coding regions and one every 40 bp in non-coding regions. Non-synonymous substitutions contributed substantially to the polymorphism observed in coding regions. The non-synonymous to silent diversity ratio was 0.16 on average, which is fairly higher to the ratio reported in other... |

The summer mortality patterns was studied in 1996 on the Ronce-les-Bains oyster bank (175 ha), located on the southern part of the Bay Marennes-Oleron (Atlantic coastline). Studies on growth, sexual maturation, survival rates and environmental variables were compared at fifteen experimental sites (on- and off-bottom culture). After 7 months, cumulative mortality reached 8-19 and 23-33% for off-bottom and on-bottom culture, respectively which is significantly higher for the latter case. A seasonal mortality trend was noted, with a significant increase related to air temperature greater than 20 degrees C and with a significant pre-spawning glycogen catabolism. Based on soft tissue flesh growth results from both types of culture, several empirical models were... |

Fisheries and aquaculture are of major importance to the coastal communities throughout the Bay of Biscaye. Almost half of French fishermen rely on catches from the Bay which achieve and estimated first sale value of more than 525m annually. Moreover, emblematic species such as eels have an additional economic as weil as social value for coastal communities. Similarly, the main French shellfish rearing areas are located within the Bay of Biscaye. They contribute predominantly to the yearly spat (mussel & oyster) recruitment, used to sustain the entire French shellfish industry. These activities have a direct impact on ecosystem functioning and biodiversity. Meanwhile, drastic environmental changes have been reported over the last 30 years, including a... |

Oyster farming in France is a traditional activity. Each year, 60,000 tons of C. gigas are fattened before being sold. Present-day fattening techniques for improving oyster taste and colour and increasing the meat weight are not particularly reliable. To optimize the fattening process, large phytoplanktonic blooms were induced in ponds, then distributed in oyster ponds. Despite the variability of the autumn weather conditions, diatoms (Skeletonema costatum) have been successfully cultured in outdoor ponds. During neap tides (when no seawater replenishes the water in the oyster beds), between mid-October and mid-December 1996, the fattening index (the weight of the meat) was constant or increased by 10-15% when a supplement of algae of 380.000... |

Bivalve predation by seabream has been observed worldwide and is a major concern for bivalve farmers. Farmed bivalve-seabream interactions must be better understood to ensure the sustainability of bivalve aquaculture. The objectives of this study were to characterize gilthead seabream Sparus aurata presence in a bivalve farm in Prevost Lagoon (Mediterranean Sea) using acoustic telemetry and to evaluate monthly losses of mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis and oysters Crassostrea gigas due to seabream predation over an 18 mo period inside the farm and at an unprotected experimental platform. Large (281 to 499 mm TL) seabream were more commonly detected in the bivalve farm than were small (200 to 280 mm TL) seabream. In contrast to small seabream, 90% of large... |

The most significant genetic improvement for production of Pacific oyster (Crassastrea gigas) has been obtained through the breeding of triploids, especially since the development of tetraploids. Quantitative genetics studies suggest that significant gains, for disease resistance or for other traits of aquacultural interest, could be obtained using this approach. However, the limited extent of hatchery-propagation (versus natural recruitment) and/or various technical difficulties and biological characteristics of the species have slowed the development of selective breeding programs. Recently, in the USA, Australia and New Zealand, family-based selective breeding programs have been initiated to improve growth and yield. In Europe, where both natural and... |
