Urbatzka, Peer; Wendland, Matthias; Salzeder, Georg; Offenberger, Konrad.
Effective microorganisms (EM) were often applied in organic farming. The influence of three different compounds with EM (EM A, EM ceramic powder, Terra Biosa) was examined as compared with a control without application in a stationary field trial. The trial was conducted in 2004 – 2006 at Freising, Bavaria. Field beans, winter wheat and spring barley were grown. Higher crop yields in the variants with EM A and Terra Biosa application as well as higher crude protein content with EM ceramic powder application were determined compared to the control in each one of the three years. Susceptibility to diseases, resistance to lodging, thousand seed weight, sorting of grain yield and weed abundance were not affected by EM application. Taken into account the...

Ergebnisse zur Anwendbarkeit der neuen VDLUFA-Methode für die Humusbilanzierung im ökologischen Landbau Organic Eprints
Brock, Christopher; Leithold, Günter.
Recently a revised version of the German standard method for humus balancing according to VDLUFA has been published. In contrast to the preceeding version, the method now shall be applicable not only in conventional, but also organic farming systems. In this contribution, we try to define the scope of the three levels of organic matter demand parameters for crops applied in the method, as an applicable definition is missing in the VDLUFA method description. We do so by calculating crop uptake of mineralized humus-N from the balance parameters, and by linking N uptake to yield levels of crops. Further, we calculate humus balances for farming system treatments in the Organic Arable Farming Experiment Gladbacherhof (Villmar,Germany) and test the ability of...

Oekologischer Ackerbauversuch Gladbacherhof - Effekte von Fruchtfolge und Bodenbearbeitung in der ersten Rotation Organic Eprints
Schmidt, Harald; Leithold, Günter.
In a long term trial at the University of Giessen three organic crop rotation systems with and without livestock and four soil tillage treatments (deep plough, 2 x two layer plough and cultivator/rotary harrow) are investigated since 1998. Compared to the other two rotations the stockless rotation without annual green manure showed lower cash crop yields, a negative N-balance and rising weed coverage. The highest cash crop yields were mostly achieved with deep ploughing. Two layer tillage caused N and C accumulation in the upper soil layer (0-15 cm). The weed coverage was highest in these treatments. Especially exclusive tillage with cultivator/rotary harrow resulted in a distinct increase of thistles and high coverage with annual weeds.

History of the Internal Control System at the Association of Organic Cacao Farmers (APKO) in Pidie Organic Eprints
Mulyadi, Tommy.
Plenty of Activities, but Limited Funding and Reliable Resources. Another big problem faced by ICS is weeds and diseases that attack cacao trees. The farmers are not used to the organic farming practice of mechanical or manual weeding, instead of using herbicides. The farmers are also eager to apply chemicals to control cacao plant diseases. It requires constant monitoring of ICS staff, who must continually inform the cooperative of internal problems, verbally or in writing, in every meeting.

Will growth characteristics describe yield differently in different environments? Organic Eprints
Kristensen, Kristian; Ericson, Lars.
The growing interest in organic farming has increased the interest in examining if different growing characteristics among varieties would explain differences in yield differently in conventional compared to organic systems. This work will focus on that question. The analyses are performed using data from trials with spring barley in Denmark and Sweden. Growing characteristics on diseases, volume weight, grain weight, and lodging will be included in the work. The growing characteristics are included as covariates to see how much of the variation caused by varieties and interaction with varieties that can be explained by the growing characteristic. The model is setup in order to estimate simultaneously the effect of the growing characteristics and the...

The effect of pre-crop and fertilization on baking quality of organic spring wheat Organic Eprints
Väisänen, Jaana; Pihala, Marjo.
Soil structure more than previous crop seemed to influence the development of organic spring wheat during the extremely wet growing season in 1998. However, the best soil structures and strongest wheat crops were found after clover leys and the poorest after peas. The most important determinant for the baking quality of the flour was the cultivar.

Environmental impact and macro-economic feasibility of organic agriculture in the Danube River Basin Organic Eprints
Znaor, Darko; Kieft, Henk.
Several studies from the mid-nineties pointed to agriculture as the single biggest nutrient polluter of the surface water in the Danube River Basin (Haskoning, 1994). Following these findings, the EU Phare programme awarded in 1995 a four-year education and research project aimed at introducing and assessing feasibility of organic agriculture in three Danube River countries: Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania. So far it is the biggest and most elaborate project on organic agriculture ever implemented in these three countries. The project consisted of a spectrum of training, on-farm demonstration and research/study activities, and prepared strategy papers for policy redesigning. The studies and research performed assessed the impact of organic agriculture on (i)...
