With this practice, feed and production costs can be reduced by 16 % due to lower quantities of concentrate feed and lower costs of "pasture feed" per ton. Practical recommendations • Allow time for the grass ley to establish before sows start grazing. • Enrich the ley with legumes to provide good nutritional value and palatability for sows. • Harvest/remove less palatable plants that are not eaten by sows. • To prevent rooting behaviour remove sows when the grass is still high (> 8 cm). • Encourage the creation of functional areas (lying area, feeding area) and encourage sows to learn to graze on the paddock. • Provide individual feeding distribution systems to avoid aggression. • Provide excess grass as silage during periods with no grass... |

Projektleiter Christophe Notz zieht Bilanz. |

A study was carried out to investigate the potential of condensed tannins (CT) from sainfoin to minimize ruminal ammonia load in dairy cows grazing pasture with a high crude protein content (227 g/kg dry matter [DM]). Eight ruminally fistulated Holstein cows were supplemented with either 4 kg DM of dehydrated-pelleted sainfoin (CT content: 71 g/kg DM) or 4 kg DM of dehydrated-pelleted alfalfa (n = 4). Supplements were divided into two meals fed in the morning and in the afternoon before cows went on pasture. After adaptation to the diet (9 d) milk performance were measured on three consecutive days and ruminal fluid and blood were sampled on two consecutive days at 6:30, 8:00 and 16:30 h. Grass intake on pasture and the proportion of digested... |

Milk composition of dairy animals is influenced by the composition of the ration fed. The objective of this study was to determine if the percentages and absolute amounts of hay, grass silage, pasture, maize silage and concentrate in the feed ration can be estimated using MIR spectrometry of milk. A total of 10200 milk samples from 90 dairy cows were collected, and the intakes of all ration components were measured. Using partial least squares regression (PLS), equations were developed to estimate ration compositions corresponding to each milk sample. To evaluate accuracy, the correlation between observed and estimated values (R) and ratio to performance (RPD) were used. Notable R values (for kg/for %) were observed for the ration proportion of pasture... |

Four organic dairy farms of a German farm network (www.pilotbetriebe.de) were described in detail with respect to average diets and feedstuff quality, and were compared to the mean results of the 22 organic and 22 conventional farms of the network. At milk yields between 4,469 and 6,769 kg energy corrected milk (ECM) a-1, rations of three farms almost completely depended on grass and grass clover from both grassland and arable land (96-100 %; mean organic approx. 75 %). The fourth farm was similar to the average conventional milk yield and diet (incl. maize silage and a high share of concentrates) hence it largely depended on arable land. Enteric methane (CH4) emissions per kg ECM were higher the more fibre rich feedstuffs were fed and, as expected, the... |

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the nutritive interest of different organic and local raw material for organic broiler nutrition. Chemical analysis and balance study on 35 days old broilers (slow growth strain) were conducted to esti mate metablizable energy and protein digestibilty of 11 raw materials. There was a positive correlation between fat content and metabolizable energy. The results indicated that forages and larva of insects could contribute to protein feeding in organic broilers. Technolgy could represent an interesting wazy to increase nutritional value of local seeds (such as linseed, sunflower). There is need to complementary study like amino acid profile or incorporation in the diet during the life of animal. |

Organic animal feed is the basic element for organic animal production. In our country, in organic animal feed farming, farmers generally prefer forage crops as by-products and do not follow an alternation system for animal feed production. They make feed production either as inter-crop or as second crop. For this reason, there is no production based on an alternation system in which the animal can meet all nutritional needs. In the same season in the production of organic animal feed, roughage, energy feed and protein feed are needed to meet all animal nutritional values. The cultivation of these feed plants can be achieved with a good rotation system. However, most of the farmers do not know which rotation system give more organic feed. For this reason,... |

In recent years it has become more and more evident that the bacterial flora in the gut of warm-blooded animals modulates physiological processes and the immunological status of the host. Besides effects on growth parameters, commensal intestinal bacteria balance the immune system and prevent colonization of pathogenic bacteria. The question is if the gut microbiota is also important in lower vertebrates such as fish? Is the microbiota related to the diet type and does it play a protective role in connection to pathogenic challenge? To examine these questions rainbow trout fry were fed two different diets of either a marine or vegetable origin from first feeding and onwards. At a size of about four gram the fish were bath challenged by Yersinia ruckeri... |
