A MAGYAR ÖKOTERMELÉS ÁTTEKINTÉSE AgEcon
Gyarmati, Gabor.
Egyes rossz adottságú gazdaságok földjeiket átállítják ökológiai státuszra, a támogatás végett. A műve-lési ágak között nagyobb a gyep (rét, legelő, 53,6%) és alacsonyabb a szántó (26,4%) aránya. A gyepterületek könnyen átminősíthetők ökológiai területté, vi-szont gazdasági értékük nem jelentős. A vetésszerkezetben a...

Is There a Role for Government in Reducing the Prevalence of Overweight and Obesity? AgEcon
Kuchler, Fred; Golan, Elise H..
Obesity is a sizable problem. Gaps in consumer information and the contribution of obesity to societal costs raise the possibility for government policy actions. However, any such action must be justified by benefits in excess of policy-induced costs.

What to Choose? The Value of Label Claims to Fresh Produce Consumers AgEcon
Bond, Craig A.; Thilmany, Dawn D.; Bond, Jennifer Keeling.
We examine consumer response to label information using a hypothetical choice experiment on red leaf lettuce attribute bundles. Using survey responses, several mixed logit models with random parameters and varying correlation assumptions are estimated that provide estimated of marginal utilities ( and marginal values) of various attributes related to general health claims, specific nutrition and health claims, certification logos, and certified organic claims (relative to the conventional reference group) for this fresh produce product. We find that consumers distinguish between labeling claims, and that attribute bundling effects are present, suggesting the results from main effects (linear) models may be misleading. Furthermore, the results imply that...

Changing Food Purchasing and Consumption Habits among Urban Middle-Classes in Hyderabad AgEcon
Lohr, Kerstin; Dittrich, Christoph.
This preparatory case study provides an overview on the issue of changing food purchasing and food consumption habits among urban middle-classes in the South Indian emerging mega-city of Hyderabad. It analyses how food purchasing and dietary habits in this specific urban stratum are subject to profound changes due to increasing spending capacity and changing lifestyles in the context of economic liberalisation and globalisation processes. Another objective of the study examines health aspects of the changing food consumption habits. While nutrition research previously focused on the serious problem of undernutrition- related nutrient deficits, recent data shows that overweight and nutrition-related chronic diseases are more and more becoming serious...

HOW LABELING OF SAFETY AND PROCESS ATTRIBUTES AFFECTS MARKETS FOR FOOD AgEcon
Caswell, Julie A..
Consumers are increasingly considering information on the safety and process (how foods are produced) attributes of food in making their buying decisions. Producers, processors, and retailers may choose voluntary labeling of these attributes, may be required to label by government regulations, or may use a combination of these approaches. The market effects depend on consumer perceptions of the attributes, the benefits and costs of labeling for companies, and the goals of government policy. These effects are illustrated through a discussion of labeling of foods that are produced with the use of biotechnology (genetically modified organisms) or that are organically grown.

Changes in Food, Alcohol and Cigarettes Consumption during Transition: Evidence from Russia AgEcon
Herzfeld, Thomas; Huffman, Sonya Kostova; Oskam, Arie J.; Rizov, Marian.
This paper examines the changes in nutritional behavior of Russian adults over the ten-year transition period, between 1994 and 2004. We present evidence on the impact of individual as well as regional characteristics on changes in fat, protein, alcohol and cigarette consumption, and on diversity of diet. The results from a dynamic empirical model suggest that among microeconomic determinants, initial levels of consumption, gender, holding a university degree, and having access to a garden plot have a significant impact on the changes in consumption behavior in Russia. Regarding the macroeconomic variables, economic growth has a significant impact on changes in fat and protein consumption and on alcohol use, while unemployment changes significantly...

Determinants of Nutritional Outcomes of Children in India: A Quantile Regression Approach AgEcon
Kandpal, Eeshani; McNamara, Paul E..
In this paper, we use quantile regressions on data from the 2005-06 wave of the Indian National Family Health Survey to study the determinants of child body-mass-index, height-for-age, and hemoglobin at different points of the conditional distribution. Our results show that only considering the conditional mean of the entire distribution can yield misleading results. In light of compelling evidence on sex-selective abortion and infanticide, we use a Heckman correction for our quantile regression to control for the “underreporting” of female births documented by Rose (1999). We find that household maternal health and education have larger effects at the lower end of the distribution than on the upper end, for all three child nutritional indicators. Results...

Evaluating the Economic Impact of Farmers’ Markets Using an Opportunity Cost Framework AgEcon
Hughes, David W.; Brown, Cheryl; Miller, Stacy; McConnell, Tom.
Farmers’ markets presumably benefit local economies through enhanced retention of local dollars. Unlike other studies, the net impact of farmers’ markets on the West Virginia economy is examined. Producer survey results are used in estimating annual direct sales ($1.725 million). Using an IMPLAN-based input-output model, gross impacts are 119 jobs (69 full-time equivalent jobs) and $2.389 million in output including $1.48 million in gross state product (GSP). When the effect of direct revenue losses are included (primarily for grocery stores), the impact is reduced to 82 jobs (43 full-time equivalent jobs), $1.075 million in output, and $0.653 million in GSP.

Consumer and Supply Chain Dynamics in the Portuguese Organic Milk Market AgEcon
Rosa, Rui; Mili, Samir; Briz, Julian.
This study explores consumer demand for organic milk products (OMP) and prospective developments in OMP supply chain in Portugal. Consumer demand is approached through a survey accomplished with a stratified sample of 625 consumers from the Porto Metropolitan area (north Portugal), whose population provides a broad representation of Portuguese. Likely future developments in the Portuguese OMP supply chain are established for 2015 time horizon through the Delphi technique, using a panel of 27 qualified experts from different professional backgrounds. Results show inter alia that there are among consumers significant lack of knowledge and conceptual distortion about the organic notion. Cluster analysis has led to the detection of three differentiated...

Hungarikumok fogyasztói elemzése AgEcon
Notari, Marta; Ferencz, Arpad; Berde, Csaba.
------------------------------------- The survey analysed 1472 responses and found that goods are considered Hungaricum only if they were produced in the territory enclosed by the...

An Exploratory Study to Assess European Consumers' Opinion about a Beef Quality Guarantee System AgEcon
Verbeke, Wim; Van Wezemael, Lynn; Barcellos, Marcia Dutra de; Kugler, Jens O.; Chryssochoidis, George M.; Ueland, Oydis; Grunert, Klaus G..
Consumer demand in relation to food is increasingly shifting towards products that are safe, nutritious, and of good eating quality. Beef consumers are demanding for experience quality that matches their quality expectations formed prior to consumption, particularly with respect to beef tenderness. The development of a beef quality guarantee system, backed up by objective knowledge obtained through muscle profiling research, can allow the beef industry to meet these consumer demands. A qualitative consumer study has been carried out to assess European consumers’ opinions about beef quality and beef related technologies. This paper reports on consumer opinions and perceptions about muscle profiling and a beef quality guarantee system. Findings indicate that...

ADULT EQUIVALENT SCALES REVISITED AgEcon
Demoussis, Michael; Mihalopoulos, Vassilis.
Use of the Tobit model for estimation of adult equivalent scale (AES) parameters and expenditure equations presupposes that zero observations represent exclusively corner solutions. This paper tests for the underlying causes of zero observations and estimates accordingly the AES parameters, the household size in adult equivalents and the resulting expenditure equations and consumption profiles. The empirical application concerns Greek household "soft" and "hard" cheese consumption. The statistical results indicate that for the examined cheese categories the "double hurdle participation" model adjusted for non-normality and heteroskedasticity is the appropriate model for the estimation of AES parameters and expenditure equations.

Are Consumers Willing to Pay for Organic When the Food is Already Local? AgEcon
Connolly, Cristina; Klaiber, H. Allen.
The emergence of community supported agriculture (CSA) farms has provided a new way for small farms to remain competitive while engaging their local community through direct marketing. In this study, we report on some of the first revealed preference valuation of CSA attributes, including the willingness to pay for competing organic certification programs. Using data on the prices and attributes of 188 CSA farms spanning Ohio and Pennsylvania we estimate willingness to pay measures from both hedonic and nearest-neighbor matching methods. Results from a semi-log hedonic reveal a willingness to pay of approximately 9% for organic branding compared to natural, which translates into an additional $48 per summer season share. We also find a statistically...
