The Impact of Minimum Wage Increases on Food and Kindred Products Prices: An Analysis of Price Pass-Through AgEcon
Lee, Chinkook; O'Roark, Brian.
An input-output model is used to analyze price pass-through effects of a minimum wage increase on prices of the food and kindred products and food-service industries. These sectors employ a disproportionate share of minimum wage workers, but results suggest a $0.50 increase in the present minimum wage would increase food prices less than 1 percent for most of the 12 food and kindred products prices and 1 percent at eating and drinking places.

General problems related to innovation and its potential in the Hungarian agro-food sector AgEcon
Husti, Istvan.
This paper stresses that innovation in Hungary leaves something to be desired, and a perpetual lack of innovation also applies to the agro-food sector which, of course, consequently weakens the nation’s general competitiveness. The 2007-2013 period and the subsequent resources provided by the EU present new challenges. It is not overstating the case to say that if Hungary is not able to capitalize on this period, then it will face competitive disadvantages capable of placing Hungarian agriculture in a critical situation. To avoid this, the conditions for innovation and innovation performance must be improved. The system of innovation in the Hungarian agro-food sector does not lend itself to the application of the model constructed on R+D. Therefore, it...

Exit from farming and land abandonment in Northern Norway AgEcon
Stokstad, Grete.
The combination of nature and farmed land is one reason why Northern Norway is attracting tourists. It is therefore of interest to know which farms that are more likely to quit faming, and to see what factors that are important for abandonment of farm land when the owner of the farm exits farming. Our results indicate that smaller properties in areas with few farmers are the most likely to be abandoned. Property structure is another important factor for abandonment, but is less important for the exit-decision. Size of the farm, including both rented and own farm land, appears to be more important for the exit-decision. Larger farm operations, with breeding stock, primary sheep and dairy cattle are more likely to continue farming.

O ENVELHECIMENTO E AS APOSENTADORIAS NO AMBIENTE RURAL: UM ENFOQUE BIBLIOGRÁFICO AgEcon
Augusto, Helder dos Anjos; Ribeiro, Eduardo Magalhaes.
This article analyzes the effect of the aging and the retirements in the Brazilian rural scene, which is a question of most importance for the current days, since the relative participation of the aging group in the total set of the Brazilian population is increasing. Thus, there exists a concern with the future of the Social Security sot that it must pass through reforms. Hence, the objective of this paper is to raise elements for the discussion on the importance of the social security in the agricultural sector, since it passes through significant demographic changes. With a sufficiently fragmented history, since the years of the Empire, the Social Security has been extending several segments of society, being one of the most important forms of inclusion...

LABOR QUALITY AND ECONOMICS DEVELOPMENT: DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES FOR ANDERSON COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA, IN THE NEW GLOBAL COMPETITION AgEcon
Ward, William A..
Industry came to South Carolina in the first half of this century to find cheap labor. By the 1990s, industry was coming in search of quality labor--a change whose pace accelerates as the decade of the nineties blends into the 21st century. Potential investors who raise inquiries with the Anderson County Office of Economic Development are less and less interested in the simple cost of labor and more and more interested in the productivity of labor as measured by the value of output per dollar of labor input. Economic development, at its core, is about jobs and about quality of life. Thus, these changing demands for labor are not to be taken lightly by government, business leaders and educators in Anderson County.

A Profile of the Mpumalanga Province: Demographics, Poverty, Income, Inequality and Unemployment from 2000 till 2007 AgEcon
Jacobs, Elne; Punt, Cecilia; Scheepers, Kabelo.
Mpumalanga’s agricultural sector is a dynamic and livelihood sustainable sector. Approximately 3.5% of Mpumalanga value added gross domestic product comes through agriculture and 2.3% of the population in Mpumalanga is working in this sector. There is thus a need for macro-economic research in order to investigate potential and current challenges and opportunities. This paper examines several of these challenges namely demographic compositions, unemployment, income distribution, poverty and inequality. It will provide results from the Labour Force Surveys from 2000 until 2007 with a more in-depth look into 2007. Population and labour force statistics provide the foundation for further analysis. This paper indicates that unemployment is being dominated by...

FATAL FARM ACCIDENTS IN NEW YORK: ESTIMATES OF THEIR COSTS AgEcon
Kelsey, Timothy W..
A telephone survey of all of the surviving families of people killed in farm accidents in New York between 1985 and 1987 (52 of 87 families interviewed, 60% response rate) found the average total annual present value of expected income foregone because of fatal farm accidents in New York is over $8.6 million (in 1987 dollars). Less than five years after the accidents, 67% of the families who operated the farms where the accidents occurred no longer operate them and 44% no longer live on the farms.

LABOR MARKET LIBERALIZATION, EMPLOYMENT AND GENDER IN RURAL CHINA AgEcon
Zhang, Linxiu; de Brauw, Alan; Rozelle, Scott.
The major objective of this paper is to discuss the development of rural labor markets in China during the past two decades and understand how it has affected women. Using household survey data that we collected in 2001, we examine the role of women in labor markets by examining employment and migration trends and changes in wages. According to the data of our nearly national representative sample, we find that there has been a sharp overall increase in off-farm participation, most of the increase has been driven by young migrants, and women, especially those in the youngest cohorts, have participated at rates equaling or surpassing those of their male counterparts. We also find that the wages of women have not been adversely affected by the emergence...

Treadle pump irrigation and poverty in Ghana AgEcon
Adeoti, Adetola I.; Barry, Boubacar; Namara, Regassa E.; Kamara, Abdul B.; Titiati, Atsu.
Treadle pump (TP) technology has been promoted by Enterprise Works Worldwide (EWW) as an alternative to the traditional rope and bucket irrigation that is necessary to overcome the challenge of uncertain and inadequate rainfall for agricultural production. The aim is to improve output, increase incomes and reduce poverty among farm households. This study examines the strategies used for dissemination of the TP and the dynamics of its adoption and impacts, with a special focus on poverty reduction. The results of the study reveal that time and labor savings for irrigation, increased size of irrigated areas and lack of fuel requirements are the attractive features of the TP for those who adopt it. Adoption of TP increases land and labor productivities; and...

Human Resources in China: The Birth Quota, Returns to Schooling, and Migration AgEcon
Schultz, T. Paul.
Rural elderly have 40% of the income of those in urban areas, spend a larger share of their income on food, are in worse health, work later into their lives, and depend more on their children, lacking pensions and public services. The birth quota since 1980 has particularly restricted the childbearing of rural less educated women, who now face retirement with fewer children for support. Inequality in China is also be traced to increasing returns to schooling , especially beyond secondary school. Government restrictions on rural-urban migration reduces national efficiency, adds to the urban-rural wage gap, and increases inequality.

THE IMPACT OF SCENIC AMENITIES ON RURAL EMPLOYMENT GROWTH AgEcon
Henderson, Jason R.; McDaniel, Kendall.
Throughout the 1990s, scenic rural areas have experienced faster employment growth than their counterparts. But, rural employment growth relies on a much broader set of county characteristics than just scenic amenities. Analysis provides insight into the role of scenic amenities in rural employment growth, generally and at the sector level.

TRADITION OR INNOVATION – WHICH APPROACH IS BETTER IN RURAL DEVELOPMENT? THE CASE OF PODLASIE REGION AgEcon
Przygodzka, Renata.
The article makes an attempt to answer the question, which of the development approaches of rural areas might be better: the one based on tradition, or perhaps the one, which is related with innovations. The conducted studies indicate that rural areas are strongly diversified. Various types of economic and social activity, which takes place in those areas, require a diversified approach. Thus, the answer for the question asked in the title cannot be a simple one. However, one can put forward a theory that the most proper development approach of rural areas is the concept of their sustainable development, in which tradition should be supplemented with innovation and vice versa. Only then will rural areas retain their heritage and at the same time will be a...

Labour use and its adjustment in Indian manufacturing industries AgEcon
Heshmati, Almas; Bhandari, Amit K..
This study provides an empirical investigation of the adjustment process of labour in Indian manufacturing industries, which evolved through structural transformation in the era of globalization. The analysis is based on a dynamic model applied to a panel of 22 two-digit manufacturing industries for a time period of 22 years covering 1980/81 to 2001/02. We assume that as competition increases industries adjust their employment to a desired level which is both industry and time specific. The results indicate that manufacturing sector has shown considerable dynamism in adjusting its workforce. The long run labour demand responds greatest to the output, followed by capital and least by wages. It is observed that Indian manufacturing is not inefficient in...

Negative Stereotypes and Willingness to Change Them: Testing Theories of Discrimination in South Africa AgEcon
Aguero, Jorge M..
This paper proposes a new test to distinguish between the two leading theories of discrimination: preference versus information. Discrimination based on preferences occurs when people behave as if they refuse to change their stereotypes about the capabilities of discriminated individuals. Those who discriminate based on information are willing to alter their stereotypes. Using data from a quasi-experiment in South Africa, I test for discrimination against women and non-whites. The preliminary results show no discrimination against the former. In the case of racial discrimination, players' stereotypes benefit non-whites instead of white opponents, but they are reluctant to change their impression for the former. However, they are willing to change their...
