Damage of leaf spot, caused by Mycosphaerella fragariae and gray mold also called Botrytis fruit rot, caused by Botrytis cinerea, average fruit weight and yield were evaluated with regard to cultural methods over two years. Leaf spot damage decreased significantly by around 90 % due to leaf sanitation (removal of dead and leaf spot infected leaves in early spring) and by 50 % due to plantation in a one-row-system instead of a two-row-system. When all leaves including the healthy green ones were removed in early spring average fruit weight decreased significantly by 10 %. Fruit sanitation - the third treatment – did not influence any of the measured parameters. Neither leaf sanitation nor fruit sanitation (removal of damaged fruits during harvest) reduced... |

Aedmaasikas on maailmas üks enam kasvatatavaid marjakultuure. Kuigi enamik aedmaasika Fragaria x ananassa sortidest on isetolmlemisvõimelised, aitab risttolmlemine kaasa suuremate ja kõrgema kvaliteediga viljade moodustumisele (Klatt jt., 2014). Puudulikult tolmeldatud õitest arenenud viljad on sageli ebakorrapärase kujuga ja väiksemad. Lisaks on hästi tolmeldatud viljad ka paremini värvunud, tugevama viljalihaga ning säilivad korjamisjärgselt kauem (Klatt jt., 2014). Aedmaasika põhiliseks kahjustajaks on hahkhallitus, Botrytis cinerea (Legard jt., 2000), mille tõrjumisel on sünteetiliste preparaatide kõrval osutunud efektiivseks ka mullaseen Gliocladium catenulatum. |

Introduction The vast majority of apple production in Europe takes place in intensive orchards, this implies the need for intensive capital investment for support structures which then have to be used for a number of generations of trees. Consequently new orchards have to be replanted in the same place as previous plots. This causes soil sickness or yield decline of which “replant disease” is the main biological component. Resulting yield losses are difficult to assess; a recent study in South Tyrol, where 12% of total EU apple is produced, showed that growth reduction can vary from 20 to 60% in replanted orchard compared to fallow control. Severity of this etiology is mediated by plant vigour, physiological state of plants and abiotic factors. Therefore,... |

The rapid increase in the development of world population and industrialization have brought many problems for human and environmental health. The widely use of chemicals in order to increase agricultural production is one of the main problems in this sense. To take into consideration this common problem, environmentally friendly production methods of organic farming as an alternative to conventional agriculture in different countries are put forward and accepted by both manufacturers and consumers, as well. In this study, the effects of different soil application forms and soil tillage techniques on the disease output of powdery mildew (Erysiphe necator) and grape yield in an organically managed vineyard with variety “Sultanina” were investigated. Soil... |

The use of birch tar oil (BTO) is a new innovation in plant and animal protection working against various weeds, harmful insects and rodents. Due to its novelty as a biocide/repellent/plant protection product, no comprehensive information on the effects of BTO on non-target soil organisms is available. In this study we examined the impact of BTO on non-target soil organisms (enchytraeids, nematodes and soil microbes) and plants using laboratory toxicity tests and field experiments. In addition, we determined the LC50 value of BTO to the earthworm Aporrectodea caliginosa and the EC50 value of BTO to the offspring production of the collembolan Folsomia candida. The effects of BTO on soil fauna were mostly insignificant. BTO seemed to be detrimental to the... |

The European cherry fruit fly (Rhagoletis cerasi) is the only pest insect which makes a insecticide treatment of cherry fruit necessary. With regard of residue free cherries a biocontrol method for R. cerasi by soil applications seems attractive. However, soil treatments can only be effective if the migration of flies is low. In order to examine the potential of soil treatments and to understand the dispersal behaviour of R. cerasi in orchards, experiments using nettings to cover the soil were conducted. The experiments were arranged in commercial, organically managed orchards. The nettings reduced fruit infestation by 90%. In addition, it was shown that the flies move only very short distances (less than 5 m) within orchards. Thus, soil treatments... |

The genus Rhagoletis Loew includes about 65 known species distributed throughout Europe, Asia and America. Most species are oligophagous, attacking only a few closely related host plants. The European cherry fruit fly R. cerasi is the economically most important pest species in Europe. R. batava and R. alternata can also cause economic damage in Europe. In addition to these species, the American cherry fruit fly species R. cingulata, R. indifferens and R. fausta, as well as the apple maggot R. pomonella, the blueberry maggot R. mendax, and the walnut infesting species R. completa and R. suavis are pest insects of high economic importance. R. cingulata and R.completa were recently introduced to Europe and are currently spreading in Central Europe. A lot of... |
