Two sampling stations were selected in order to assess the response of the seagrass to lagoon conditions. Leaf growth was estimated using Zieman method and rhizome production was evaluated by marking rhizome terminals. The vegetative development of C. nodosa inside the lagoon at the limit of its distribution is different from that observed close to the communication channel with the sea. The growth of C. nodosa show a clear unimodal cycle in the two stations reaching maximum leaf development in summer. Shoot density decreased from 915 to 500 shoot m-2 from the communication channel toward the lagoon. The average total biomass varied between 241.6 ± 34 g DW m-2 and 413.8 ± 46 g DW m-2. Leaf plastochrone interval varied seasonally with an annual average of... |

We report on the occurrence and diversity of cyanobacteria in intertidal seagrass meadows at Ocean Road and Mjimwema, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Nutrients, temperature and salinity were measured as comparative environmental factors. A total of 19 different cyanobacteria taxa were encountered, out of which eight were found exclusively in Mjimwema, four exclusively in Ocean Road and seven were common to both sites. Oscillatoria, Lyngbya and Spirulina were the dominant cyanobacterial genera. Cyanobacterial coverage was higher in Mjimwema (31–100%) than in Ocean Road (0–60%). The levels of nutrients in tidal pool waters at Ocean Road ranged from 0.45–1.03 ìmol NO3 -N/l, 0.19–0.27 ìmol NO2 -N/l and 0.03–0.09 ìmol PO4 -P/l. At Mjimwema the nutrient concentration... |

Based on data obtained during the Geochemical Ocean Section Study (GEOSECS)1977, Mer Rouge (MEROU) 1982, and US Joint Global Ocean Flux (JGOFS)1995 studies we have analyzed the processes controlling the total alkalinity (TA) of the whole water column in the Arabian Sea and the Red Sea. The main processes important for the TA variability in area of study are salinity variations, soft tissue production, calcium carbonate formation and dissolution, and sedimentation. For the subsurface waters different processes dominate in the different basins. Regarding spatial variations in surface TA, maximum values occur in the Red Sea and minimum in the upwelling region along the Omani coast in the Arabian Sea. These variations are mainly associated with physical... |

The variations of zooplankton structure and abundance were studied at short time intervals in the northern part of the West Naubaria Canal, near the sea side, based on weekly sampling from May 2002 to May 2003 .The community represented high species richness (120 species), and relatively low population density ( annual average 31340 organisms/m.3). Freshwater forms were the major representatives (68 species) of the community, including the sea side station. However, several marine species were reported inside the canal at a long distance from the sea. The community structure showed wide weekly variations (4-29 species), while between stations the differences were small. Relative to salinity in the canal, diversity index sustained the highest value (annual... |

Microalgae are important for the restoration of coastal lagoon ecosystems affected by human activities because they are useful indicators of variations of salinity and levels of nutrients such as silicate and phosphate in the water column. With the centric diatom Actinocyclus normanii from Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta (Colombian Caribbean) we conducted several experiments to evaluate the responses of this species at three levels of salinity (0, 15 and 25) and two initial densities (100 and 800 cells·ml-1) to nine treatments combining several concentrations of phosphate (0, 1,5 and 3,0 µmol·l-1) and silicate (10, 150 and 300 µmol·l-1). All treatments were maintained with light intensity of 57,9 mE-2·seg-1, photoperiod of 12:12 hrs, temperature between 22... |

The larval stages of the mangrove crab Parasesarma catenata were reared in the laboratory from eggs of females collected in the Mgazana estuary, South Africa. Survival and duration of larval stages were tested for the combined effects of temperature and salinity in a factorial design experiment, using three females each with two replicates of 15 larvae per combination. Combinations were made from five temperature (15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 ºC) and four salinity values (15, 25, 35 and 45 ‰). Results were tested by ANOVA and multiple regression was applied to generate contour models by polynomial equation. It was found that P. catenata larvae develop optimally in near to seawater salinity at a temperature of around 25 ºC. These results support the assumption... |
