Isolation and survival of Yersinia enterocolitica in ice cream at different pH values, stored at -18°c BJM
Pederiva,Norma B. Barbini de; Guzmán,Ana M. Stefanini de.
The presence of Yersinia enterocolitica was investigated in 203 samples of industrial (123) and non-industrial ice cream (80). Two Y. enterocolitica strains were isolated from non-industrial ice cream, which suggests the possibility of post-manufacturing contamination. One strain was typed as B:1A, O: 3,50,51; lis Xz, while the other one was biotyped as: B:1A but not serologically typed. Survival of Y. enterocolitica was investigated by inoculating nine samples of industrially manufactured ice cream to contain 20 CFU/ml of Y. enterocolitica and stored at -18°C for 480 days. The inoculated samples were classified into three different groups according to their pH (Group 1: pH 4-5; Group 2: pH 5-6 and Group 3: pH 6-7). Viability was determined by a...

Formulated diets for giant Chilean frog Calyptocephalella gayi tadpoles Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Toledo,Pedro H; Suazo,Ricardo; Viana,Maria T.
In this study, we conducted an experiment to evaluate the overall effect of novel diets on the growth, metamorphosis and survival of tadpoles of the endangered giant Chilean frog Calyptocephalella gayi (previously known as Caudiverbera caudiverbera) to evaluate the potential of this species for culture and repopulation purposes. Using fishmeal as the main protein source with a substitution of either scallop viscera or Spirulina meal, three treatments were formulated to contain similar amounts of protein and energy. The experiment was run for 75 days, after which the tadpoles showed no significant differences among treatments in terms of their growth or survival. This is the first study to report positive effects of different diets on the growth and...

Effects of early fertilization on the performance of Nothofagus dombeyi planted in the Coastal Range of south-central Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Donoso,Pablo J; Soto,Daniel P; Schlatter,Juan E; Büchner,Carlos A.
Native Nothofagus dombeyi growth rates excel in secondary forests and in some plantations, and the species has good timber quality. However, few have reported on the effects of fertilization on N. dombeyi plantations. This is a key matter since fertilization has environmental and financial costs, and therefore its use to increase growth and survival for production or restoration must be carefully evaluated. Here we evaluated the early effects of fertilization (control and three levels) using several performance variables (leaf properties, growth, plant quality, and survival) in a N. dombeyi plantation at a low elevation in the Coastal Range of south-central Chile, which has a rainy temperate climate and medium fertility soils. Four years after plantation...

The influence of the photoperiod on productive performance and survival of piabanha-of-Pardo (Brycon vonoi ), hatchery Ciência Rural
Pedreira,Marcelo Mattos; Costa,Deliane Cristina; Schorer,Marianne.
ABSTRACT: This research aimed to verify the influence of the photoperiod on the performance and survival piabanha-of-Pardo (Brycon vonoi) larvae. Piabanha-of-Pardo larvae 24 hours post-hatch, with body weight of 2.44 ± 0.02mg, and total length of 7.82 ± 0.46mm, were subjected to five different photoperiods: 0L:24D, 6L:18D, 12L:12D, 18L:6D and 24L:0D (871.12 ± 92.65 lux). Daily, the water temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), percentage of oxygen saturation, pH, and water conductivity were monitored, and presented similar water quality values among tanks with distinct photoperiods, and within the range considered appropriate for the genus Brycon larvae. Piabanha-of-Pardo larvae have better productive performance and survival rate at longer photoperiods, over...

Na+ and K+ body levels and survival of fingerlings of Rhamdia quelen (Siluriformes, Pimelodidae) exposed to acute changes of water pH. Ciência Rural
Zaions,Maria Ignez; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of water pH on survival and Na+ and K+ body levels of fingerlings of Rhamdia quelen, a freshwater catfish. Survival was 100% at pH 4.00 to 9.0 throughout the experiment (96h), and death of all fingerlings was observed only at pH 3.75 or lower and at pH 10.50. There was a significant correlation between water pH and body Na+ levels (but not K+ levels) 72h after transfer. There was a clear reduction in Na+ levels when the transfer was to pH outside the 5.0 - 9.0 range, which is in agreement with the fact that fishes exposed to such pH’s present loss of ions by diffusion and/or a decrease in absorption. Growth experiments with this species probably would present best results within the 5.0 - 9.0 pH...
