REFRIGERATED TRUCKING IN THE INFORMATION AGE AgEcon
Beilock, Richard P.; Delciello, James.
Trends in refrigerated trucking since the 1980s were examined. Owner-operators have maintained their importance, but are more likely to operate under leases. Equipment replacement and utilization rates are good. Finally, drivers express high levels of satisfaction with driving and compensation and the large majority intend to remain in the profession.

Effects of Increased Biofuel Blending on Demand for Biomass, Food Production and Commodity Prices in Eastern Germany AgEcon
Zeller, Heiko; Haring, Anna Maria; Khachatryan, Armen.
Renewable resources are gaining importance in modern society due to their expected positive effects on agriculture, the environment and the economy. To support renewable energy from biomass the EU promotes the cultivation of energy crops. A spatial equilibrium model is applied based on the concept of maximizing net welfare, to provide information whether energy crop production competes with food production for land area and to show the effects of increased biofuel demand on food prices. The Model of Interregional Trade of Energy Crops (ITEC) refers to Eastern Germany and adjacent areas of Poland. Results show that the regions produce enough feedstocks to meet the demand for food and biofuel production. In many cases both food crops and biofuels are either...

Farm level effects of EU policy liberalization: Simulations based on an EU-wide agricultural sector model and a supply model of the German agricultural sector AgEcon
Deppermann, Andre; Grethe, Harald; Offermann, Frank.
The impact of sectoral or economy wide policy scenarios is often of strong political and public interest, yet it is a scientific challenge. When analyzing different levels of aggregation, the use of single models may not be sufficient. In this paper we establish an interface between the European Simulation Model (ESIM) and the Farm Modelling Information System (FARMIS). The linkage of the two models allows us to quantify adjustment processes both at the sectoral level and at the farm group level for the German agricultural sector. Different liberalization scenarios are presented and compared to a reference scenario. The abolishment of market price support leads to a reduction of farm incomes, especially if direct payments are also reduced. The low absolute...

Allocating Nutrient Load Reduction across a Watershed: Implications of Different Principles AgEcon
Feng, Hongli; Jha, Manoj K.; Gassman, Philip W..
A watershed based model, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), along with transfer coefficients is used to assess alternative principles of allocating nutrient load reduction in the Raccoon River watershed in central Iowa. Four principles are examined for their cost-effectiveness and impacts on water quality: absolute equity, equity based on ability, critical area targeting, and geographic proximity. Based on SWAT simulation results, transfer coefficients are calculated for the effects of nitrogen application reduction. We find both critical area targeting and downstream focus (an example of geographic proximity) can be more expensive than equal allocation, a manifestation of absolute equity. Unless abatement costs are quite heterogeneous across the...

RACIONAMENTO DE CRÉDITO NO BRASIL: EVIDÊNCIAS EMPÍRICAS PARA O SETOR EMPRESARIAL NO PERÍODO 2000 - 2005 AgEcon
Andrade Junior, Wanderley Lopes De; Amin, Mario Miguel.

TESTS FOR LABOR MARKET EFFICIENCY IN BURKINA FASO AgEcon
Lamb, Russell L.; Worthington, Mark.
In this paper, we use data from the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) survey of households in Burkina Faso, to assess market efficiency. Two methods based on testable implications of the Agricultural Household Model (AHM) are used. The first is based on the observation that if markets clear at prevailing prices, the household labor allocation will be such that shadow wages equate to market wages... The second looks for significance of household structural parameters on labor demand ... The remainder of the paper is organized as follows. In Section II, we provide a brief review of the Agricultural Household Model, highlighting the effect of market failure on separability and the role of shadow prices. Section...

Developing a benefit transfer database for environmental values in Queensland AgEcon
Windle, Jill; Rolfe, John.
made in one situation to related circumstances. The benefit transfer process is typically reliant on the availability of a number of source studies which have appropriate levels of reliability and relevance to the issue of interest. However, the limited number of non-market valuation studies to draw on for source values currently limits the benefit transfer process. In this paper, an alternative approach to benefit transfer is outlined where a series of valuation studies were specifically performed to build a reference data base of values for benefit transfer purposes. The choice modelling technique was used to estimate community values for protecting soil, water and vegetation stocks in Queensland, Australia, where both state and regional populations were...

PORTFOLIO DIVERSIFICATION USING FARMLAND INVESTMENTS AgEcon
Hennings, Enrique; Sherrick, Bruce J.; Barry, Peter J..
This study examines the impact of farmland investments on the risk-efficiency of mixed asset portfolios. Traditional asset classes considered available for investment include various equity market indices, commercial REITs, corporate bonds of investment- and sub investment grade, government bonds and treasury bills, corporate bonds, ex-U.S. equity indices, short term interest rate indexes, and commodity investments. Unlevered farmland returns were constructed at the state level as the sum of cash rent and capital gains less property taxes as a fraction of asset values. In addition, a unique, high quality data set comprised of the returns to all managed farmland properties in the NCREIF Farmland Index was also considered. A traditional optimal E-V...

RISK MANAGEMENT THROUGH ENTERPRISE DIVERSIFICATION: A FARM-LEVEL ANALYSIS AgEcon
Mishra, Ashok K.; El-Osta, Hisham S..
Enterprise diversification is a self-insuring strategy used by farmers to protect against risk. This paper examines the impact of various farm, operator, and household characteristics on the level of on-farm diversification. Results provide evidence that larger farms are more specialized. Also, farmers who participate in off-farm income and farms located near urban areas are less likely to diversify. Additionally, results also show a significant positive relationship between diversification and farm/crop insurance and sole proprietorships. Finally, there is also evidence that farms that received government payments are more diversified than their counterparts.

Demand-Side Factors in Optimal Land Conservation Choice AgEcon
Ando, Amy Whritenour; Shah, Payal.
The dominant paradigm of conservation-reserve planning in economics is to optimize the provision of physical conservation benefits (measured in units like species protected) given a budget constraint. Large-scale biology-based priority setting implies that the value we place on biodiversity and ecosystem function is not affected by human proximity to that natural capital. There is significant evidence, however, that human willingness to pay (WTP) for conservation declines with distance (e.g. Loomis 2000) – a phenomenon we refer to as “spatial value decay”. This paper begins a new strand of the conservation planning literature that takes demand-side factors – the location of people in the landscape and the degree to which their willingness to pay for an...

Testing a Performance Measurement Framework for Agri-Food Supply Chains AgEcon
Aramyan, Lusine H.; Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M.; van Kooten, Olaf.
Measurement of entire supply chain performance is an important issue, because it allows for "tracking and tracing" of efficacy and efficiency failures and leads to more informed decision-making with regards to chain organization. The ultimate aim of implementing a performance measurement system is to improve the performance of the organization. If supply chains can get their performance measurement right, the data they generate will tell them where they are, how they are doing, and where they are going. The choice of appropriate supply chain performance indicators is rather complicated due to presence of multiple inputs and multiple outputs in the system. This issue becomes even more problematic in the field of food and agribusiness due to specific...

Traceability in the U.S. Food Supply: An Application of Transaction Cost Analysis AgEcon
Wang, Chao-shih; Bravo, Jesus.
Suboptimal supply of food and agricultural traceability is framed in a transaction cost analysis. We propose a model that considers the variables of opportunism potential, agency costs, uncertainty, asset specificity, frequency, and transaction costs. The model is then applied to the development of a typology of feasible governance modes – market, hybrid, firm, or public bureau, considering levels of transaction costs and competencies of private firms. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed and future research opportunities are suggested.

Scales or Stars? Consumer Preferences for Food Quality Signals AgEcon
Shang, Wenjing; Hooker, Neal H..
Food quality has become an increasing concern in the public health arena over recent years. Food manufactures and processors hygiene performance plays a crucial part in producing safer food products. While there are inspections assessing plants'’ hygiene performance, there is little direct communication of performance measures to consumers. This paper uses survey data to determine consumer preferences among a set of four alternative food labels which report such plant level performance scores. How much information, as well as the format they most prefer, is compared using a range of econometric models. Results show that consumers prefer number scheme, larger volume of quality information and are generally consistent with their preference. These findings...
