O programa ProCafé proporciona benefícios financeiros adicionais, melhorando significativamente a viabilidade e reduzindo...

VERTICAL INTEGRATION AND CONTRACTING IN THE U.S. POULTRY SECTOR AgEcon
Vukina, Tomislav.
This paper provides an economic explanation of the existing market organization of the poultry industry. The vertical integration and the emergence of contracts with independent farmers is explained by risk sharing, technological progress and innovation dissemination, consumer demand for product reputation and uniform quality, and access to capital. In addition, the sources of growers'’ discontent with existing contracts are analyzed and the potential need for government regulation is discussed.

ESTIMATION OF TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE IN THE PASTORAL ZONE AgEcon
te Kloot, Jack H.; Anderson, Jock R..
Measurement of rates of technological change is frequently done in the context of the production function. While measurement suffers problems ranging from conceptual to statistical, this study focuses on the dependence of measurements on the algebraic form of the function specified and the statistical approach adopted. The data relate to an individual property in the central western Queensland sheep country.

Agricultural Profits and Farm Household Wealth: A Farm-level Analysis Using Repeated Cross Sections AgEcon
Blank, Steven C.; Erickson, Kenneth W.; Nehring, Richard F.; Hallahan, Charles B..
This study examines the relationship between agricultural profits and farm household wealth across locations and farm sizes in U.S. agriculture. A multiperiod household model is used to develop hypotheses for testing. Results indicate that farmland has out-performed nonfarm investments over the past decade. Thus, households may want to keep their farmland to build wealth, even if it requires them to earn off-farm income. The analysis implies that decision will be made based on farm household wealth factors having little to do with agriculture.

INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT: SUBSTITUTES OR COMPLEMENTS? AgEcon
Marchant, Mary A.; Cornell, Dyana N.; Koo, Won W..
International agricultural trade has evolved over time. Processed foods and developing countries have become major growth markets for U.S. agricultural exports, and foreign direct investment (FDI) has become even more important than exports as a means of accessing foreign markets. The critical question is whether FDI is a substitute for or a complement of exports. This research builds upon an existing theoretical FDI model and contributes to the literature through the development of a simultaneous equation system for FDI and exports, which is estimated using two-stage least squares. Empirical analyses were used to examine the relationship between U.S. FDI and exports of processed foods into East Asian countries - China, Japan, Singapore, South Korea,...

Comparing Parts with the Whole: Willingness to Pay for Pesticide-Free, Non-GM, and Organic Potatoes and Sweet Corn AgEcon
Bernard, John C.; Bernard, Daria J..
Auction experiments were used to investigate demand relationships and willingness to pay (WTP) for four versions of potatoes and sweet corn—conventional, organic, and two parts of organic: no pesticides and non-genetically modified (non-GM). Elasticities showed strong and asymmetric substitute relationships between organic and its parts. Combined premiums of the parts were not significantly different than the whole organic premium, suggesting WTP for the attributes are not additive. A two-stage heteroskedastic tobit model found significant WTP for each part dependent on demographics and beliefs about conventional versions. Results suggest segments for parts of organic could be established alongside the whole.

ESTIMATED HEDGING RISK WITH CASH SETTLEMENT FEEDER CATTLE FUTURES AgEcon
Elam, Emmett W..
Beginning with the September 1986 contract, feeder cattle futures have been settled based on cash settlement rather than physical delivery. The effect that cash settlement will have on hedging risk for feeder cattle was estimated using Arkansas prices for 1977-86, but the results should be representative of other markets. For 600-700 pound steers and heifers, hedging risk is estimated to be lower for hedges placed in the new cash settlement contract. For steers and heifers weighing less than 600 pounds, hedging risk is estimated to be lower for the cash settlement contract for fall hedges, whereas hedging risk is estimated to increase for spring hedges.

New Regulations Governing Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations Require New Solutions: Discussion AgEcon
Fleming, Ronald A.; Thomas, Michael H..
This paper discusses the three invited papers presented in the session titled “New Regulations Require New Solutions: Federal Provisions Governing Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations” (i.e., CAFOs). These papers provide an excellent review of current state and federal laws and an excellent summary of what has been and is currently being done with respect to CAFO regulation. The papers present three different policy approaches: i) alternative performance standards, ii) location-specific regulation, and iii) insurance-based underwriting of CAFO discharges. Each approach has its drawbacks; however, blending theses suggested policies into current regulations would result in efficiency gains.

Contract System for Circulation of the Right to Rural Land Contractual Management AgEcon
Cao, Wu-Kun; Wu, De-En.
From the perspective of civil subject theory, law of value, comparative law and history of laws, the thesis expounds that the contract on the transfer of the contractual right of rural lands is in nature a civil contract instead of an administrative one. Then it explores the defects in the contract from the viewpoint of legal value goal, contract law and legal sociology, that is, the relevant provisions in Rural Land Contract Law and Explanations of Supreme People’s Court about the Issues concerning the Laws Applicable to the Trial of Cases of Disputes over Rural Land Contracting go against the principle of free contracting and run counter to the legal value goal of justice, so they do not achieve good implementing effect. Finally, the thesis demonstrates...

SWOT Analysis and Countermeasures of Industrial Development in Three Gorges Reservoir Area AgEcon
He, Wei-wei.
Based on the introduction of the general situation of the research area, the SWOT analysis is applied to study the strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats of the industrial development in Three Gorges Reservoir area. The strengths are represented by the following four aspects: abundant agricultural resources, rich tourism resources, rich mineral resources and rich hydro energy. The weaknesses are analyzed from the following three aspects: the backward infrastructure, the acute conflict of the emigration of manufactures and the poor exploitation of advantageous resources. The opportunities of industrial development, which cover the opportunities bought by the guidance of national policies and preferential policies, by the improvement of traffic...

IMPACTS OF GATT/URUGUAY ROUND TRADE NEGOTIATIONS ON U.S. BEEF AND CATTLE PRICES AgEcon
Brester, Gary W.; Wohlgenant, Michael K..
The GATT/Uruguay Round trade negotiations have resulted in a multilateral relaxation of beef trade restrictions. A linear elasticity model of the U.S. beef industry is developed using log differentials equations. Beef consumption, production, and trade are disaggregated into appropriate ground and table cut components. The model predicts that GATT/Uruguay Round will cause asymmetric effects on ground and table cut beef consumers. In general, fed cattle and cow/calf producers will benefit from trade liberalization because of increases in fed and feeder cattle prices. However, nonfed cattle price will decrease.

PHYTOSANITARY REGULATION AND AGRICULTURAL FLOWS: TOBACCO INPUTS AND CIGARETTES OUTPUTS AgEcon
Overton, Benny; Beghin, John C.; Foster, William E..
This paper examines the effects of the use of increasingly-popular phytosanitary regulations on production costs, and output and factor trade flows. The case addressed is that of the European regulation of maximum chemical residues in cigarettes manufactured with tobacco containing maleic hydrazide. The paper presents simulations of the effects of tightening the input/output market linkages and on the substitution away from the residue-contaminated U.S. input to residue-free non-U.S. inputs. This induced substitution results in higher costs, lower quantity supplied of the final product, and higher prices for U.S. cigarettes in Europe. Cross-price effects lead to higher quantities of EU cigarettes sold and a corresponding increase in the use of all...

Boolean logit and probit in Stata AgEcon
Braumoeller, Bear F..
This paper introduces new statistical models, Boolean logit and probit, that allow researchers to model binary outcomes as the results of Boolean interactions among independent causal processes. Each process (or “causal path”) is modeled as the unobserved outcome in a standard logit or probit equation, and the dependent variable is modeled as the observed product of their Boolean interaction. Up to five causal paths can be modeled, in any combination—A and B and C produce Y, A and (B or [C and D]) produce Y, etc.

CONTRIBUCIÓN DEL CAPITAL SOCIAL EN LA MICROEMPRESA RURAL AgEcon
Ojeda Lopez, Ruth Noemi; Mul Encalada, Jennifer; Lopez Canto, Leonor Elena; Jimenez Diez, Olivia.
The present study research identified the level of social capital in a small enterprise and its impact in the company itself. In Latin America, the importance of this concept lies in its relevance because diverse disciplines uses it as a reference setting, today it is used not only as part of political science and sociology, but also as part of the organization theory, economics, human behavior and management. It put emphasis in the relationships among people, among organizations and not in the individuals as isolated subjects. One of its advantages is that the social capital can contribute in the analysis of the small local communities from a social perspective and economical development. Because of the nature of the data handled in this study a...

A quarter of a century of Australian agricultural economics - some personal reflections AgEcon
Gruen, Fred H.G..
The late Fred Gruen (1921–1997) was asked to write these previously unpublished reflections for the twenty‐eighth Annual Conference of the Australian Agricultural Economics Society in 1984; they were circulated in working paper format as Gruen (1986). In this paper, Fred, who made the transition from agricultural to general economics later in his career, offers a modest perspective on his contributions to agricultural analysis and policy. The unifying theme in this outstandingly productive life was his focus on public policy issues whose resolution would impact importantly on the lives of many — that is, his intellectual curiosity was driven ultimately by his philanthropy.
