The fisheries policy of the Republic of Seychelles OceanDocs
Anon..
The fisheries policy of the Government of Seychelles was first drafted in 1986. At that time, both the industrial and artisanal fisheries in Seychelles were in a developmental stage and the policy reflected the needs to promote both the development and conservation of our marine resources as well as maximizing benefits. In 1985 the number of licenses issued for the industrial tuna fishery was 49 for the purse seiners and 165 for longliners with an annual purse seine catch of 130,000 tonnes. The total catch for the industrial purse seine fishery has continued to rise and peaked at around 407, 000 tonnes in the year 2003. The artisanal fishing fleet has declined from 410 vessels in 1985 to 330 in the year 2003, however, the nature of the fleet has changed...

Analyse de l'état des stocks d'albacore (Thunnus albacares) et de listao (Katsuwonus pelamis) de l'Atlantique au 30 septembre 1980 OceanDocs
Fonteneau, A.; Cayre, P..

Review of the state of pollution of the Lagos lagoon OceanDocs
Ajao, E.A..
Guinea coast. It is a shallow expanse of water with restricted circulation in a micro-tidal environment. This aquatic resource of multiple usages receives inputs of domestic The Lagos Lagoon is the largest of the four lagoon systems of the Gulf of hydrocarbon cooling water from a thermal power station and emissions from automobile exhaust. Micro-pollutants examined in the water, sediment and biota have included organic waste, trace heavy metals and chlorinated hydrocarbons. Concentrations detected have identified â hot spotsâ and relatively unpolluted areas for the different contaminants in the lagoon. The results show marked variations and non-uniform distribution from one season to another. It has been difficult to differentiate pollution effects...

Species Diversity and Relative Abundance of Fisheries Resources Found in Beach Seine along the Central Coast of Ghana OceanDocs
Aggrey-Fynn, J.; Sackey-Mensah, R..
The diversity and relative species abundance of fisheries resources were studied from Winneba to Cape Coast on the central coast of Ghana during December 2007 to May 2009. Samples of organisms were collected at random from beach seine landings during the study period. The fishes were counted and identified to the family and species levels. Ecological indices such as Shannon-Wiener diversity index, equitability and Sørenson’s similarity index were used to analyse the data. Specimens from Winneba, Saltpond and Cape Coast comprise 56 species belonging to 30 families. Carangidae, Haemulidae, Clupeidae and Sciaenidae were some of the families, where key species occurred during the study. The relative abundance of key organisms in the beach seine landings...

Benefits Beyond Boundaries: Fishery Effects of Marine Reserves OceanDocs
Roberts, C.M.; Gell, F.R..
Marine reserves are areas of the sea where fishing is not allowed. They provide refuges where populations of exploited species can recover and habitats modified by fishing can regenerate. In some places, closed areas have been used for fisheries management for centuries, and until recently natural refugia also existed, inaccessible through depth, distance or adverse conditions. Developments in technology have left few areas beyond the reach of fishing. Recently, the idea of marine reserves as fisheries management tools has re-emerged, developing from ecosystem management approaches, and observations of incidental fisheries benefits from reserves established for conservation. Marine reserves are predicted to benefit adjacent fisheries through two...

The Influence of Pacific SST on the Precipitation over Southern Africa Diagnosed from an AGCM OceanDocs
Misra, V..
This study is an analysis of AGCM model results to understand the dynamics of the response of precipitation over southern Africa (SA) to anomalies in the sea surface temperature (SST) over the Pacific Ocean. The dipole pattern of interannual precipitation anomaly over SA and its temporal variations are quite similar in both the ensemble mean of the control (where the AGCM is forced with observed SST’s in all ocean basins) and experimental runs (where the AGCM is forced with seasonally varying climatological SST over the Pacific Ocean). However the amplitude of the variability is found to be relatively reduced in the experimental runs. This is shown to be a result of the modulation of the Walker circulation by the variability of Pacific Ocean SST. The...

Marine invertebrate communities of Baie Ternay National Marine Park and Baie Beau Vallon, Mahe, Seychelles OceanDocs
Pittman, S.J..
Typically, coral reefs are dominated by sedentary colonial organisms. Species compositions are temporally and spatially dynamic and populations may be seen to interact through similar mechanisms as those observed in terrestrial plant communities. In these areas, intense competition for limited niche space, selects for varied defensive and offensive strategies and reproductive life history traits.

Development of an Ocean Data Information Network in the IOCINCWIO OceanDocs
The need to develop capacity in collection, analysis and distribution of data and information from the oceans and all seas was one of the components of Chapter 17 Agenda 21 of UNCED. This was to be done through strengthening of national scientific capabilities for data collection and analysis, creation of national databases, linking of these databases to existing data and information services and mechanisms, and co-operation with a view to the exchange of data and information and its storage and archiving through global and regional data centres. This strategy is perfectly in line with the IODE programme. It has been observed that the participation of IOCINCWIO Member States in IODE programme activities is minimal: no NODCs or RNODCs have been established...

Coral reef degradation in the Indian Ocean. Status reports and project presentation 2000 OceanDocs
The temperatures of the world’s oceans are increasing at an accelerating rate. Recent estimates indicate that the magnitude of these increases might be as much as several degrees over the next century and undoubtedly, the impacts of these changes on the Earth’s ecosystems are likely to become increasingly obvious. Coral reefs have already shown dramatic responses to the increasing ocean temperatures. Under normal temperature conditions, reef-building corals, which form the foundation of coral reefs, are living very near the maximum sea temperatures that they can tolerate. If they are exposed to even modest increases in sea temperatures, perhaps only 1° C - 2° C, they become stressed and often ‘bleach’. This bleaching of corals is a response to stress, and...
