Whitemouth croaker Micropogonias furnieri fishery during three intensive fishing seasons in the outer area of the La Plata River (Argentina-Uruguay) is analyzed. Resource exploitation in the South Atlantic area shows a general retraction of the distribution range and an isolation of the La Plata River stock where most of the fishing effort concentrates. The species market evolution brought about, for Argentina and Uruguay, an important shift in its dynamics as of 1992, when the product insertion in Asiatic markets generated an important commercial attraction and a subsequent increase in the fishing effort by the argentine inshore coastal fleet. This caused a change in the fishery development in Argentina and the establishment, in winter, of a fleet... |

The Coastal Project developed at the INIDEP (Mar del Plata,Argentina) offers an analysis on the operative modality of coastal assessment surveys, proposing an information process useful to standardize data collection and processes of future surveys. The efficiency of the evaluation of strata used until the year 1993 was analyzed and a new stratification is proposed. The aim was to define area-strata of importance for the main coastal species, using the traditional stratification of the coastal ecosystem and the mew methodology. The reason for redefining strata is that a decrease was been detected in the number of traditional species and an increment on the biomass of non-commercial species and, associated with it, the development of new explotation areas.... |

Ichthyoplankton was sampled in 9 exploratory cruises in the sea off Buenos Aires province (Argentina), Uruguay and Brazil, during the spawning peak of the anchovy in spring-early summer and mid-autumn. The most abundant speices in the ichthyoplankton was Engraulis anchoita, representing 88. of the eggs and 76. of the larvae collected in all the cruises. These percentages vary boath regionally and seasonally; as regards eggs, the lowest percentage (10. ) was found in January. The distribution of anchovy eggs and larvae, covered almost entirely the surveyed area, with the exception of hte region influenced by the River Plate estuary. Minimum salinity tolerance for the species eggs was 23.5o/oo. The eastern limit of the distribution of anchovy eggs, extends... |
