North Sea ecosystem models published in accessible literature are partitioned into groups with respect to their emphasis on significance and detail of different trophic levels of the ecosystem. These subsets are treated separately in the three main chapters, which deal with relationships with physical dynamics, lower trophic level interactions and higher trophic level interactions. They are preceded by chapters that introduce the scope of the models, the history of modelling approaches, main purposes and specific aims, general aspects of internal structure, and modelling techniques applied. The main chapters compare the process descriptions characteristic of the subsets of models, and discuss aims and results with emphasis on significance and contribution... |

The area of the North Sea next to the Belgian and Dutch coasts has been surveyed since January 1971. The photosynthetic capacity (potential production) of samples collected at 63 stations and 4 depths has been measured using the 14C techniques. The homogeneity of the water column was demonstrated almost everywhere. A general pattern of decrease of the potential production from the coast to the open sea was demonstrated in all seasons. Figures ranged from 3 to 30 mg C m-3 h-1. Primary production was also determined both by calculations, using the Steemann Nielsen (1952) formula, and by <i>in situ</i> measurements. The higher turbidity near the coast has proved to limit... |

A model which integrates particulate primary production over time (light-day) and depth (euphonic layer) was used extensively for calculations of the primary production results of the Fladen Ground Experiment (FLEX'76), and is described here in detail. The photosynthesis-light relationship occupies a central position in the computational scheme. The choice of an adequate relationship (here, a variant of the Vollenweider's (1965) expression), the properties of such a formula, and the relevant parameters are discussed in the paper. The proposed approach is useful whenever specific problems imply a reduction to elemental processes, as it was the case during the Fladen Ground Experiment. Thus, the difficulty of integrating primary production over a... |

The various biological compartments of the Belgian coastal zone of the North Sea were studied since 1971. The synthesis of available data on carbon cycling includes phytoplankton biomass and activities (particulate and dissolved primary production, respiration) , zooplankton biomass and activities (grazing, respiration) and planktonic and benthic microbial heterotrophic activities. These various carbon flux estimates allow the development of an overall budget of carbon cycling. This budget shows the importance of microbial (planktonic and benthic) heterotrophs versus zooplankton in the utilization of primary production. Comparison with literature data suggests that this could be a general feature of coastal, as opposed to open sea ecosystems. |

The South Bight of the North Sea has been investigated for the photosynthetic capacity of net- and nannoplankton, the fractional filtration method being used simultaneously with the C14 technique. The water appeared to be well mixed so that no important variations occurred along the vertical profile. The horizontal distribution of net-/nannoplankton ratios showed, however, a zonation pattern with netplankton-dominant activity near to the coast and nannoplankton-dominant activity further off. The interference of the River Scheldt has also been demonstrated. The various implications of the 'metabolic structure' of the phytoplankton community demonstrated by the fractionation method are discussed. |
