The population growth of Simpulopsis ovata (Sowerby, 1822) from the Centro de Pesquisas e Conservação da Natureza - Pró-Mata, São Francisco de Paula, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, was studied along eleven months of 1996. Two discontinuous age classes were identified. The first one, with a monthly growth rate of 1.55 mm, was reproductively mature during April and May. The second one appeared after the previous group and had a monthly growth rate of 0.44 mm. The fact that no adults from the two age classes were found together is a characteristic of a semelparous species. New insights about its shell, pallial cavity and reproductive system are given. This is the first record of S. ovata for the State of Rio Grande do Sul. |

Classically, investigation of the internal morphology and composition of molluscs and especially bivalves relies on destructive method (biometry, biochemistry and histology). These techniques have given essential information, but in contrast are time consuming and lead to the irreversible loss of the animal while they don't allow integration of the various levels of molecular-to-organism functioning. The aim of this study is to analyze for the first time the potential of NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) imaging (MRI) to depict, with sufficient resolution and satisfactory contrast, the anatomy of a bivalve model, the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, without opening it. MRI experiments were carried out at 19 °C in several non-anaesthetized adult Pacific... |

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is increasingly used in biology and the appearance of imaging and structural and/or metabolic spectroscopy (MRI/MSR) platforms (Rennes, Strasbourg, Marseille...) devoted to this small animal shows the recent keen interest in these research techniques. However, to this day and to our knowledge, no approach of this style has been developed for sea molluscs and even less so for the cup oyster, Crassostrea gigas. Because of its economic importance, this bivalve mollusc is the subject of much research in physiology, to the point of becoming, at IFREMER, a biological model for marine invertebrates. Nonetheless, most of the methodologies developed for studying it are destructive, which (1) prevents individual follow-up, (2)... |

Nautilocaris saintlaurentae gen. nov, sp. nov, is described and illustrated from hydrothermal vents in the North Fiji Basin and Lau Basin in the south-western Pacific. This new taxon is assigned to the Alvinocarididae. It has a well-developed, dorsally dentate rostrum, carapace with pterygostomian spine present, eye broadly fused mesially, epipod-setobranch complex present above pereopods, and appendix internae on second to fourth pleopods greatly reduced. This combination of characters places it in an intermediate position between a group of species in the genus Alvinocaris with well developed, dorsally, dentate rostrum, carapace with pterygostomian spine present, eyes narrowly fused mesially, epipod-setobranch complex absent and well-developed appendices... |

Siliquariid Tenagodus (synonym: Siliquaria) snails are obligatory sponge commensals, with uncoiling and laterally slitted shells embedded inside Demospongiae hosts, and shell apertures facing the outside allowing for respiratory and gill-filter-feeding activities. Live-collected animals observed in situ within hosts provide the first detailed functional morphological study of the group, and form the basis for systematic revision of the western Atlantic members of type genus Tenagodus (Siliquariidae, synonym: Tenagodidae). Three species are recognized. Overall anatomical features of wide-ranging Atlantic T. modestus (Dall, 1881) and T. squamatus (de Blainville, 1827) [ = T. anguillae Morch, 18611 are similar to those previously described for New Zealand... |

Sampling of a population of D. Labrax was one with spear diving catches. Morphometric and meristic data were used to calculate a biometric index. This index showed that all the bass of the Sete area belong to Dicentrarchus labrax, even if they were black spotted on the upper part of the body. Morphology was slightly different according to sex, but sex determination was not always possible using morphometric data. This inshore population shows some morphological characteristics (branchiospine and lateral line scale number) different from the data collected on the same sp along the Maroc Atlantic coast by Gravier, 1961. |

It is of paramount importance for surgeons to have a thorough knowledge of the normal anatomy of the extrahepatic bile ducts and its variations due to the high frequency with which they perform in this anatomic site. The cystohepatic triangle, or Calot's Triangle, is bound by the cystic duct, common hepatic duct, and the hepatic border; therefore, its surface area depends on the conformation of these ducts and is closely linked to surgical procedures performed in this region. It has been reported that the length and the position of these ducts may be related to the formation of bile duct stones, Mirizzi's syndrome, and bile duct cancer. Thus, the present work aims to analyze the configuration of the extrahepatic biliary tree and its possible variations, as... |

The lingula of the mandible is a bone projection that limits medially the mandibular foramen, which is the region where the inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle penetrates. The lingula is an important anatomical landmark used in maxillofacial surgeries and to block the inferior alveolar nerve. The aim of this study was to analyze the different types of lingula found in mandibles of Brazilian individuals, considering aspects such as gender and race. One hundred thirty-two macerated mandibles of Brazilian adult individuals of both sexes, black and white skin colors, were used. The lingula was classified into four types: triangular, truncated, nodular and assimilated. The data were analyzed using Chi-square test and Fisher's exact test. The truncated shape... |

The authors have used non-laying and laying hens (Lohmann Brown), in order to study morphological aspects development of tunica mucosa of the oviduct. The results showed that the oviduct of the hen is well-developed at the left side, atrophied at the right side and consists of five different regions: infundibulum, magnum, isthmus, shell-gland and excretory section (vagina). During 1-120 days in oviduct is the most advanced caudal part, where height and width folds of a tunica mucosa is more than in cranial part, that probably, is caused with the future function of these departments. In the period oviposition (150-540 days), the tunica mucosa is most advanced in such departments, as: magnum, isthmus, shell-gland |

The Golden Lion Tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia) is an endemic primate of the Brazilian Atlantic coastal rainforest, still under serious extinction risk. Just a few is know about its anatomy, specifically the muscle unions. Due to the reasons exposed before, aiming understanding the locomotion of this and others primates, we decided to study the morphology and morphometry of the gracilis and sartorius muscles, and the relation between them, in three Leontopithecus species. The current study examined 18 adult animal carcasses, of both sexes and with no physical abnormalities on the studied region. The material belongs to the Rio de Janeiro Primatology Center collection. The posterior members were dissected till the gracilis and sartorius muscles level, when... |
