The protist phylum Haplosporidia comprises over 40 described species with representatives infecting a range of mollusc hosts, including several ecologically and economically significant pathogens. Continuing exploration of haplosporidian diversity has added ten new species in recent years and brought the phylogenetics of the group into somewhat clearer focus, with monophyletic Bonamia and Minchinia lineages continuing to be supported. However, the addition of new sequences to phylogenetic analyses has left the paraphyletic genus Haplosporidium’s picture less resolved. It is not clear that even two genera will be enough to accommodate the species presently drawn to the Haplosporidium regions of the haplosporidian tree. In this review, we summarize recent... |

Considering the economic importance of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas to the French shellfish industry, the appearance of major diseases in this species could cause dramatic decreases in production Suminoe oysters, of the non-indigenous species Crassostrea rivularis (Gould), were introduced into France to test their ability to adapt to local conditions. These oysters were imported after careful examination, and were maintained in laboratory quarantine. Some mortalities occurred 7 mo after importation. Histological and electron microscope examinations of 9 dead specimens revealed a parasite presumed to be a Bonamia-like protozoan. This is the first report concerning a parasite of the genus Bonamia in a species belonging to the genus Crassostrea. Thus,... |

Of the 75 laboratories contacted through the survey, 54 answered, 14 of which are partially or totally devoted to mollusc diseases. In fact, only 4 laboratories are devoted full-time to this work. Of the 14 laboratories that declared to work on the diagnosis of mollusc diseases, 12 stated that they worked with mussels, 12 with oysters, 9 with clams and 8 with other mollusc species. This is coherent with available production information. According to production data in 2001 (FAO source), the main mollusc species in the region are the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis (297,485 tonnes), the Mediterranean mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis (131,014 tonnes), the Pacific cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas (127,323 tonnes, an important part of which is produced on the... |
