Nineteen new record species for Argentina belonged to Bacillariophyceae and Chlorophyceae Classes were identified as the result of the analysis of a total of 103 phytoplankton samples obtained from a 5-year study survey performed in 6 lotic systems from Buenos Aires province, tributaries of Río de la Plata river: Paraná de las Palmas river (1995-1996), Samborombón river, El Pescado, J. Blanco, Buñirrigo, Rodríguez and El Gato streams (1997-1998) and in a intensive study carried out in the last two systems (1999). The taxa are ilustrated, a range of physical and chemical water variables of the sampling sites in which each species was found is furnished, together with the environmental requirements, cited in the literature. The 16 % of the algae were... |

ABSTRACT Trichoptera presents about 15,000 species described globally, of which 2,562 are recorded in the Neotropics and 642 in Brazil, distributed in 70 genera and 16 families. In Brazil, knowledge of the distribution and species richness of Trichoptera is incipient and heterogeneous, especially in some states such as Mato Grosso do Sul. In this work, we present an updated checklist of caddisflies for Mato Grosso do Sul state, representing nine families, 24 genera, and 16 species, four of them are new species records. Additionally, a new record of species for the Brazilian country is presented. |

ABSTRACT A checklist composed of 105 species of parasitic Hymenoptera, which includes the non-aculeate Apocrita, recorded in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul (MS), Brazil, is presented. A new list, containing 153 genera obtained in recent surveys is also presented; out of these 131 are new records. The major knowledge gaps for these organisms in the State and the prospects for future studies for these organisms are discussed. |

ABSTRACT Thalassia testudinum and Halodule wrigthii are the dominant seagrasses in the Caribbean, being common across shallow shorelines, either as monospecific or as intermixed meadows. Among the macrofauna associated with these beds, crustaceans are considered essential for the whole ecosystem functioning. However, knowledge about the associated community of decapod crustaceans in assemblages of T. testudinum and H. wrigthii is still scarce, particularly outside of protected areas. Here we report eight new decapod species for the Paraguaná Peninsula (Falcón State, Venezuela) in association with intermixed seagrass beds: Achelous tumidulus Stimpson, 1871, Alpheus aff. floridanus Kingsley, 1878, Chorinus heros (Herbst, 1790), Clibanarius antillensis... |

Gargaphia inca Monte, 1943 was synonymized with G. opima Drake, 1931 without any declared reasons. Gargaphia inca is known only from its type location (Satipo, Peru), and G. opima from Colombia (Villavencio) and Peru (Cam. Del Pichis, type-locality), in addition to the new records here presented, including the first record for Ecuador. Both species are redescribed, and the status of G. inca is revisited and raised from synonymy. Illustrations of some of the most remarkable differences between these taxa are provided, as well as dorsal habitus images. Discussions on the genus systematic status and this nomenclatural act are presented. |

A preliminary description of the biology of the Saldanha hydrothermal field in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (36 degrees 34'N, 32 degrees 26'W, 2200 m) is given, based on direct observation, video images and samples. Venting occurs mainly in a diffuse way through sediment, but hydrothermal fluid discharges are visible through centimeter-long orifices, scattered on the sediment, over an area of approximately 400 m(2), at depths between 2,200 and 2,220 metres. Emitted fluids are transparent, with a temperature of 7-9 degrees C. An almost complete absence of macro- and megafauna around the venting orifices was found. The only vent invertebrate identified was the gastropod Phymorhynchus sp., with only two juvenile specimens caught. A careful examination of the images... |

Sagitta lucida is a large chaetognath (max. length = 36mm), characterized by a transparent and flaccid body, a collarette restricted to the neck region, long anterior fins, narrow and rayless on their anterior two-thirds, and ovoid seminal vesicles. Sagitta adenensis , another large species (length = 32 mn), with also a flaccid body, has a collarette, anterior teeth nearly as numerous as posterior ones, lateral fins with rays only on the outer edge. The two specimens have been caught in a trawl from a depth of 400 m, near Djibouti. |

Several deep-water mollusks collected during the Marion Dufresne MD55 expedition off SE Brazil have been studied in recent papers. The present work focuses on eight species belonging to the cerithioidean families Cerithiidae, Litiopidae, Modulidae and Planaxidae. Three species have their geographic distributions greatly expanded: Bayericerithium bayeri Petuch, 2001 from Pernambuco to Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará states (north) and to Bahia and Espírito Santo states (south), Brazilian coast; Ittibittium oryza (Mörch, 1876), from the Caribbean to the SW Atlantic; and Angiola lineata (Costa, 1778), from Trindade Island, Brazil to the Abrolhos Slope, nearly 870 km westward. Four species reported herein had their bathymetric ranges greatly expanded: Alaba... |
