First report of the invasive jellyfish Gonionemus vertens A. Agassiz, 1862 in the Berre Lagoon, southeast France ArchiMer
Marchessaux, Guillaume; Gadreaud, Justine; Martin-garin, Bertrand; Thiery, Alain; Ourgaud, Melanie; Belloni, Bruno; Thibault, Delphine.
The hydromedusa Gonionemus vertens A. Agassiz, 1862 was first detected in the Berre Lagoon, south of France, in July 2016. Early June 2017, following an early rise in temperature, much higher numbers of specimens were reported leading to several beach goers being stung and one going into anaphylactic shock. Effort to rehabilitate this highly anthropogenically altered lagoon has led to the redevelopment of the Zostera meadows, which might be favoring the clinging jellyfish. Developmental aberrations of specimens were noted, which could be linked to the remaining presence of chemicals from the industrial development period. Impact of this predator species on the functioning of the lagoon ecosystem should also be studied.

An updated analysis of the distribution of cites-listed peruvian carnivores for conservation priorities Mastozool. neotrop.
Hurtado,Cindy M; Pacheco,Víctor; Fajardo,Úrsula; Uturunco,Angie.
Species in the Order Carnivora are susceptible to habitat fragmentation, deforestation, and climate change because of their medium to large size, large spatial requirements, and other species-specific requirements, providing challenges to conservation and management. Understanding their distributions and occurrence in the face of these threats is crucial for conservation. Peru has 21 carnivore species regulated by the CITES Convention (61.8% of all Peruvian carnivore species). The aims of this project were: a) to generate distribution maps of Peruvian carnivores listed by CITES, b) to describe their distribution by ecoregions, c) to describe changes in species richness through time, and d) to identify species and areas in need of further research and...

Establishing species distributions in large tropical plant genera: insights from twelve new Thai records of Oberonia (Orchidaceae) Naturalis
Bunpha, K.; Pedersen, H.Æ.; Sridith, K..
Establishing species distributions is particularly challenging in large tropical genera of inconspicuous plants. One such genus is Oberonia (Orchidaceae) which we are currently revising for Thailand. When encountering material of a putatively new species, great care has been taken to make a wide geographic search for matching extra-Thai taxa. Against this background, we here record 12 species as new for Thailand: O. dissitiflora, O. evrardii, O. gracilis, O. insectifera, O. lotsyana, O. microphylla, O. orbicularis, O. semifimbriata, O. singalangensis, O. stenophylla, O. suborbicularis, O. wenzelii. Seven records are based (at least in part) on older collections, suggesting that many gaps in currently known species distributions can be filled through...

Outbreaks of Trialeurodes vaporariorum (West.) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) under field conditions in the State of São Paulo, Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Lourenção,André L.; Alves,André C.; Fugi,Cristina G.Q.; Matos,Evandro S..
Trialeurodes vaporariorum (West.) is a pest of greenhouse vegetables and ornamentals and infests crops in Europe and in the American continent. In Brazil, just a few cases are known on economic crops, being all restricted to greenhouse crops. In 2003, in Itatiba and neighboring localities of State of São Paulo, Brazil, field infestations of T. vaporariorum were observed, mainly on tomato and green bean. So far, whitefly infestation in this area expanded to squash and kale also. Field studies are needed for determining interactions of T. vaporariorum with plants and natural enemies, injury levels, and methods of control.

Detection of entomopathogenic fungi in peridomestic triatomine-infested areas in central Brazil and fungal activity against Triatoma infestans (Klug) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) Neotropical Entomology
Luz,Christian; Rocha,Luiz F.N.; Nery,Gustavo V..
From 148 substrate samples collected in peridomestic triatomine-infested habitats of 24 farms in Central Brazil, 31 isolates of Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch.) Sorok. and 15 isolates of Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. were obtained. Most of the isolates were found in substrates that consisted of soil mixed with animal feces or soil only in areas of trees where poultry roost and pig houses. Fungi were detected with an insect bait method using Triatoma infestans (Klug), and combined in vitro and in vivo techniques with modified Chase medium and T. infestans. All isolates were highly virulent to T. infestans third instar nymphs at a relative humidity > 98% and temperature of 25 ± 0.5°C. However, activity against nymphs was reduced at 75% relative...

Argyrotaenia sphaleropa (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in citrus in the State of Paraná, Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Meneguim,Ana M.; Hohmann,Celso L..
Argyrotaenia sphaleropa (Meyrick) is associated with various fruit species in South America. This tortricid was first detected in citrus, Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck, in Brazil, in commercial groves in northern Paraná, during the 1994/95-crop season. The aim of this work was to study the biology of this lepidopteran under laboratory conditions (28 ± 2ºC, 70 ± 10% UR, 14h photofase) using the citrus cultivar Pêra. Larvae obtained from egg masses collected in a commercial citrus grove in Rolândia, PR, were individually placed on citrus terminal leaves inside glass shell vials (8.5 x 2.5 cm) until adulthood. A male and a female moth were then transferred to acrylic cages (13 x 10 cm) containing inside a bouquet made with new citrus flush to serve as...

A new record of giant squid Architeuthis sp. (Cephalopoda: Oegopsida) in Brazilian waters Rev. Bras. Zool.
Martins,Rodrigo Silvestre; Perez,José Angel Alvarez.
A carcass of a giant squid Architeuthis sp. was found afloat off Southern Brazil (28°05'S, 45°35'W) on 29 August 1999. The specimen was a mature female of 116 cm mantle length and had arms incomplete and tentacles missing. The specimen was morphologically similar to those previously described for the Southwest Atlantic, but a few peculiarities were found on the shape of the fins, head and the cross-section and length of ventral arms. Spermatophores were found embedded within the skin of the left ventral arm, at around 60 cm from the mouth, and could be traced to the core of the arm, radiating nearly four centimeters from the point of entry. This was the third record of Architeuthis in Brazilian waters and the eighth in Southwest Atlantic when the specimen...

Garlic (Allium sativumL.) is a host to several viruses, most commonly those belonging to theAllexivirus,Carlavirus, orPotyvirusgenera. Nine species distributed among these three genera have been reported in Brazil: two species within carlaviruses, two within potyviruses, and five within allexiviruses. To quantify the prevalence of these viruses, young leaves from 520 plants (plants either symptomatic or asymptomatic) were collected from commercial fields grown in four Brazilian states and analyzed using universal and species-specific primers via the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Potyvirus presence was positive in 306 samples (81 %), 151 of them (38 %) in mixed infections with other viruses. The most frequent potyviruses...

Lazzari,Sonia Maria Noemberg; Zonta de Carvalho,Regina Celia; Cardoso,Josiane Teresinha.
This paper reports the first record of a bamboo aphid Takecallis arundinariae (Essig, 1917) on bamboo plants in Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil. Specimens were also collected in yellow pan traps from June-August (fall-winter), and a few specimens from October-December (late spring-early summer). Individuals were found feeding on the underside of leaves, parallel to the veins on Dendroclamus sp. and Merostachys sp. (Bambusoideae). Individuals collected were represented mainly by alate viviparous females bearing a characteristic clypeus with an anterior tubercle. A brief diagnosis and morphometric data are presented to distinguish T. arundinariae from Takecallis taiwanus (Takahashi, 1926), another bamboo aphid recorded recently in Brazil. T. arundinariae is a...
