South Africa's small pelagics fishery is currently the largest in volume and second largest in value in the southern Benguela. It exploits short-lived, small pelagic fishes such as anchovy (for reduction into fish meal and oil) and sardine (for reduction as well as human consumption through canned products), and to a lesser extent redeye round herring and mesopelagics, largely for reduction. We explore the recent history (1940s to present) of the social-ecological system around this fishery. The spatial extent of small pelagic fish spawning habitat is influenced by environmental factors and by the state of the adult population. In return, the configuration of spawning habitat affects recruitment and therefore the future structure of the adult population. Interannual changes in spatial patterns of spawning reflect variations in adult population structures and their environment. Modelling the vertical distribution of fish eggs is important when assessing fish stocks with egg production methods and for monitoring the reproductive potential of fish populations. The French sardine fishery ArchiMer

This approach of the French sardine fishery shows mainly that pelagic trawlers are targeting less and less sardine, year after year. In an assessment approach, it would be necessary to define an estimation of fishing effort, but it will be very difficult. We are able to compt the number of fishing days, but not the time of fishing (or number of shoots for example for purse seiners) or time of searching schools. So, accessibility and catchability could be certainly more accurate than the fishing effort for assesment purposes.

Linking small pelagic dietary shifts with ecosystem changes in the Gulf of Lions ArchiMer

Since 2008, a severe decrease in size and body condition together with a demographic truncation has been observed in the sardine (secondarily in anchovy) population of the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean Sea). In parallel, sprat biomass, which was negligible before, has increased tenfold. All of these changes have strongly affected the regional fisheries. Using trophic and isotopic data from contrasting periods of low versus high growth and condition, we investigated potential changes in diet and interspecific feeding interactions through time. Improvement of lipid and phospholipid recoveries from sardine (Sardina pilchardus) viscera using industrial proteases ArchiMer

Enzymatic hydrolysis of sardine viscera by three broad spectrum proteases was investigated using the pHstat method (24 h, pH 8, 50 degrees C). After hydrolysis, three fractions (sludge, aqueous phase and oily phase) were collected. For each fraction, lipids and phospholipids were quantified and molecular weights of aqueous phase peptides were determined. Under these conditions, the degree of hydrolysis (DH) varied from 1.9% (Flavourzyme), 3.1% (Protamex) and to 3.3% (Alcalase). Dry matter distribution indicated that all hydrolysis performed increased solubilisation of proteins: protein recovery for each hydrolysis ranged from 57.4% to 61.2%. La ponte de la sardine en 1964 dans le golfe de Gascogne et sur le plateau celtique a été récemment étudiée à l'Institut des Pêches par S. Arbault et N. Boutin dans le cadre d'une travail plus général sur la répartition saisonnière des oeufs et larves de téléostéens, travail que résume une communication présentée au Comité du plancton. Les résultats exposés ici et limités à la seule sardine, font suite à l'étude des ces chercheurs et proviennent du dépouillement des pêches planctoniques de 3 campagnes d'hydrologie des pêches effectuées par la Thalassa et la Pélagia dans la même région du 26 avril au 9 mai 1966, du 13 février au 22 mars 1967 et du 16 mai au 7 juin 1967.

Variation in abundance and size of the sardine Sardina pilchardus (Walbaum) in the eastern Adriatic ArchiMer

We compared the relationship between annual mean total length and catch per unit effort (CPUE), as an index of population abundance. Since 1993 the yearly amounts of sardine landings for the Bay of Biscay fishing ports have experienced a constant increase (10,000 tonnes in 1993); on that account sardine is the first species landed in the fishing ports of the Bay of Biscay (15,000 tonnes in 2003). It is sold 0.54 € / kg (constant price over ten years) which means a 8,100 k€ turnover in 2003 and the 12th rank in value landed in the fishing ports of Bay of Biscay.
