Germination Ecology of Catchfly (Silene conoidea) Seeds of Different Colors Planta Daninha
TANVEER,A.; JAVAID,M.M.; ABBAS,R.N.; ALI,H.H.; NAZIR,M.Q.; BALAL,R.M.; SHAHID,M.A..
ABSTRACT Catchfly (Silene conoidea), an annual herb, is usually recognized as an emerging weed species in Eurasia and North America. The presence of somatic seed polymorphism might aid in the adaptation of this weed in different climatic conditions. We conducted laboratory and greenhouse experiments to study the seed polymorphism and influence of various environmental factors like temperature, salt stress, osmotic stress and burial depth on the germination and emergence characteristics of catchfly. Optimum germination of seeds of all colors was recorded at a temperature of 15 oC. Germination of catchfly seeds of all colors followed decreasing trend as NaCl concentration increased from 50 mM to 200 mM. Seed germination was maximum (87-96%) at 0 MPa but...

Weed Seed Bank Dynamics: Weed Seed Bank Modulation Through Tillage and Weed Management Planta Daninha
MAQSOOD,Q.; ABBAS,R.N.; KHALIQ,A.; ZAHIR,Z.A..
ABSTRACT: A field trial was conducted with the aim of assessing weed seed bank status of soil under maize cultivation. It was worked out by sampling from soil corer at different depths ranging from 0-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20 and 20-25 cm. Weed seed bank was monitored with a cultivator, a rotavator, a mouldboard plough (MB) and a chisel plough in tilled plots under Atrazine 330 EC at 1.00 kg a.i. ha-1 at 20 DAS, hand weeding at 20 and 40 DAS and no weeding. Sixteen weed species were identified in soil samples, four species contributing about 72% of the total weed seed bank. Tillage system was more important determinant of weed seed density than the weed management practices. Movement pattern of weed seeds by all tillage treatments differ significantly over...

Consequences of Varied Planting Geometry and Early Post Emergence Herbicides for Crop-Weed Interventions in Rice Under Semi-Arid Climate Planta Daninha
ASHRAF,U.; ABBAS,R.N.; HUSSAIN,S.; MO,Z.W.; ANJUM,S.A.; KHAN,I.; TANG,X.R..
ABSTRACT Adjustment of planting geometry along with reduced applications of herbicides can be a viable tool for effective weed management in rice. This present study has examined the effects of three planting geometries (20 cm x 20 cm, 20 cm x 10 cm and 10 cm x 10 cm); along with early post emergence herbicides, viz; bispyribac sodium 20% WP at 39.50 g a.i. ha-1, bispyribac sodium 100 SC at 39.50 g a.i. ha-1, cyhalofop-butyle 10% EC at 49.50 g a.i. ha-1, and penoxulam 240 EC at 15 g a.i. ha-1 on weed growth, and rice performance under semi-arid climate. A weedy check was maintained as control where no herbicide was applied. Results showed that the narrowest plant spacing (10 cm x 10 cm) effectively controlled weeds; however, it also resulted in reduced...
