Characterization of genetic coefficients of durum wheat (Triticum turgidumL. ssp. durum)'Llareta-INIA' and 'Corcolén-INIA' Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Garrido,Marco; Román,Luis; Silva,Paola; Castellaro,Giorgio; García de Cortázar,Víctor; Acevedo,Edmundo.
The genetic coefficients, representative of a crop, are necessary to use growth models; in many cases the range of the species is known, but there are no specific values for varieties. Durum wheat (Triticum turgidumL. ssp. durum)'Llareta-INIA' and 'Corcolén-INIA' were sown under irrigation in the experiment station Antumapu of the Universidad de Chile on 29 June 2007, 19 May 2009, and 15 June 2010 in order to determinate four genetic coefficients: developmental thermal time, phyllochron (PHLN), extinction coefficient (k), and radiation use efficiency (RUE), and to evaluate the performance of these coefficients. Thermal times to anthesis and from anthesis to physiological maturity were 652 and 541 °C d, respectively. Two PHLN values were found, 46.6 °C d...

A simple method for estimating suitable territory for bioenergy species in Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Morales-Salinas,Luis; Acevedo,Edmundo; Castellaro,Giorgio; Román-Osorio,Luis; Morales-Inostroza,Jael; Alonso,Máximo F.
In the past 20 years, different areas of research concerning native and exotic species, herbaceous crops and forest plantations have been oriented toward satisfying domestic, industrial and transportation energy requirements. Because bioenergy species constitute an important resource, it would be strategic for a country to have a method for identifying areas suitable for their cultivation to properly incorporate the establishment of energy crops into land use planning. In this study, we sought to define the suitable territories for 16 bioenergy species and their energy potential based on their soil and climate requirements in Central and Southern Chile. We used an adapted version of the FAO EcoCrop database implemented through DIVA-GIS software to predict...

Prosopis tamarugo Phil.: a native tree from the Atacama Desert groundwater table depth thresholds for conservation RChHN
Calderon,Gabriela; Garrido,Marco; Acevedo,Edmundo.
Prosopis tamarugo Phil. is a legume tree native to the Atacama Desert, Chile. Tamarugo has physiological characteristics that are highly adapted to extreme life conditions in the Pampa del Tamarugal. Null precipitation makes tamarugo completely dependent on groundwater, developing in areas where the groundwater depth is closest to the surface. Groundwater extraction for domestic consumption, mining, and agriculture affects the desert ecosystem by lowering the water table. Measuring and describing the impacts on vegetation through the monitoring of physiological variables along with groundwater depletion in salt flats where extraction wells are located has contributed to a better understanding of tamarugo response to this stress factor. Integrated variables...

TILLAGE EFFECT ON SOIL ORGANIC MATTER, MYCORRHIZAL HYPHAE AND AGGREGATES IN A MEDITERRANEAN AGROECOSYSTEM R.C. Suelo Nutr. Veg.
Curaqueo,Gustavo; Acevedo,Edmundo; Cornejo,Pablo; Seguel,Alex; Rubio,Rosa; Borie,Fernando.
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and their product glomalin (GRSP) play a decisive role in the soil aggregation, affecting the carbon (C) dynamics in agroecosystems. Tillage affects the AMF activity and GRSP content, influencing the stability and the soil C forms as well. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of no tillage (NT) and conventional tillage (CT) on: i) arbuscular mycorrhizal hyphal length and GRSP content; ii) the nature of soil organic matter by means of physical fractionation (free paniculate organic matter [fPOM]; occluded paniculate organic matter [oPOM] and mineral-associated soil organic matter [Mineral]), as well as chemical fractionation (fulvic acid, humic acid and humin), and iii) the relationships between AMF parameters,...
