La lotera destaca en nuestro medio con un interesante potencial agrícola, por su capacidad fijadora de nitrógeno atmosférico y valioso aporte a los sistemas agropecuarios de bajos insumos. En este estudio se trabajó con las especies más utilizadas en el país, Lotus corniculatus L. o lotera de hoja ancha, Lotus glaber o lotera de hoja angosta, y Lotus uliginosus o alfalfa chilota. Con el objetivo de determinar la capacidad de fijar nitrógeno y evaluar en forma comparativa la eficiencia de la fijación simbiótica de distintas cepas, se realizó un ensayo bajo condiciones controladas con 68 cepas naturalizadas de Mesorhizobium loti y Bradyrhizobium sp. Condensed tannins (CT) present in Lotus spp., depending on their concentration in the plant, can prevent bloating and improve protein absorption in ruminants. With the objective to know the variability of this characteristic, the CT concentration (% dry matter basis) was determined by the butanol-HCl procedure in 13 cultivars of Lotus corniculatus L. (Lc) introduced from North and South America and Oceania, 11 accessions of Lotus tenuis Waldst. & Kit. ex Willd. The response to P and water deficiencies of forage Lotus species has not been sufficiently studied in the Andisol and Vertisol soil orders in Chile's marginal areas.
