| Interest in the influence of trust on consumers’ responses to food risk perceptions associated with Canadian instances of BSE motivates this study, in which Canadian households’ expenditures on fresh meat are assessed in the context of the first three recurring risk events in which bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) was found to have affected Canadian cows. | We seek to contribute to the emerging economic theory on trade, the environment and development. Using panel data across countries, econometric models are estimated to predict the effects of openness on organic water pollutant (BOD) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Results indicate that freer trade significantly increases emissions of both pollutants, thus reducing environmental quality. Moreover, the panel nature of the data allows heterogeneity across countries to be controlled, so that comparisons can be made of how different national characteristics influence the environmental impact of freer trade. | This study examines the ability of revealed preference (RP), site-specific stated preference (SP), transferred SP, and various joint RP-SP models to predict aggregate and individual recreation site choice behavior in a holdout sample. For two statistical comparisons, the site-specific RP model provided the most accurate predictions of individual choices. However, the transferred SP model, applied directly or estimated jointly with the RP data, performed best in three aggregate and one individual prediction tests and second best in the other individual prediction comparisons. | We assess Canadian’s risk perceptions for genetically modified (GM) food and probe influences of socio-economic, demographic and other factors impinging on these perceptions. An internet-administered questionnaire with two stated choice split-sample experiments that approximate market choices of individual grocery shoppers is applied to elicit purchase behavior from 882 respondents across Canada. | Multi-attribute modeling has rapidly progressed from being a novelty to becoming a widely used tool of economic research. When both choice and attribute ratings data are available, a model that makes joint use of both offers informative inference opportunities. In the present study we develop a joint model which utilizes both choice and ratings data, allows for scale usage heterogeneity, is robust to violations of utility continuity and completeness. The model is used to obtain WTP estimates for genetically-modified content and country-of-origin attributes in an survey-based study of Canola oil labeling. | This paper develops and empirically evaluates alternative econometric strategies for accounting for non-participation - repeated choice of the same alternative or same type of alternative - in data sets that are typically analyzed within the repeated discrete choice framework. Random coefficient single and double hurdle variants of the repeated discrete choice model are developed and applied to stated preference data. The empirical results suggest that significant statistical improvements in fit can arise with the single and double models relative to more traditional models. | Consumers' attitudes to genetically modified (GM) food ingredients and their reactions to and preferences for labeling of GM food are topical issues for Canadian food policy and are the subjects of this study. This project included several components. The first of these was an assessment of public attitudes to biotechnology and to GM food based on evidence from polls and other studies. These show increasing awareness and some increase in wariness of GM food, in Canada and elsewhere. | The recreational site choice decision modeled in most economic analyses seldom contains previous experience with the site as a characteristic or attribute. A rational dynamic model is used to incorporate previous experience with the site in a model of the choice of recreation sites. Based on the comparison of dynamic and static models, it is apparent that dynamic elements influence choice. The use of previous consumption as an attribute (either in a naïve or rational form) is an improvement over static models of choice. In welfare analysis, this effect may be a significant factor. For example, a change in prices or quality attributes may have a much larger impact on those individuals who have developed habits. |
