The application of modern techniques in histochemistry, electron microscopy, physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, etc. in the last decades has changed embryology from a descriptive science to an experimental and applied science. The present book is a result of this development. A score of authors deals with all aspects of embryology from male and female gametogenesis to fruits and seeds. Amongst the topics discussed in this volume are: male and female sporogenesis, fertilisation (in vivo and in vitro), zygotic and somatic embryogenesis, endosperm development, maturation, germination and dormancy of seeds. Some of the more special subjects are apomixis and parthenocarpy. |

Acacia is, with almost 1000 species, the largest genus of vascular plants in Australia. The present double volume is the outcome of many years of work resulting in this impressive book on the Australian Wattles. In the introduction brief discussions on Classification and Phylogeny, Phytogeography, Fossil record, and Uses are presented. From the paragraphs on classification and phylogeny it is clear that a lot more work has to be done to solve remaining problems of relationship between species, groups and subgroups. The key, to all species!, covers no less than 152 pages. All species are illustrated with black and white drawings of important details, 128 with colour photographs as well. Maps to all species are included. The descriptions are in the usual... |

The present volume treats two of the subfamilies of the Leguminosae: Caesalpinioideae (as Caesalpiniaceae) and Mimosoideae (excl. Acacia, as Mimosaceae). Of the first subfamily 22 genera with 126 species are treated, of the second 16 genera with 43 species are dealt with. Each (sub)family is described and keys to the genera are given, as are keys to the species in various genera. In the species-rich genus Senna several cases of interspecific hybridisation are acknowledged by naming up to 15 ‘form taxa’ without any taxonomic status. This handsome volume is produced along the well known lines of the Flora of Australia format and standards. It is illustrated with 78 colour photographs, 96 line drawings, and 188 maps. |

A monograph of Cupaniopsis Radlk. (Sapindaceae) recognized. One species, is presented. Sixty species (20 new) are C. macrocarpa, is subdivided into two varieties (one new). Several regional keys and a multy-entry key give access to the species. Pollen morphology and leaf anatomy were studied beside macromorphology. This resulted in 40 characters for a cladistic analysis. The result of an initial analysis was rejected for several reasons (chapter 10.5). Van Welzen’s enhancement method was used to produce a more acceptable cladogram (chapter 10.6). A short note on the biogeography is given. |

A large amount of unidentified material of the Neotropical genus Guatteria (Annonaceae) is lying on herbarium shelves around the world. Here twelve species are described in an attempt to reduce this amount of unidentified material. Next to this, previously unidentified material is now assigned to G. asplundiana, G. microcarpa, G. pastazae, and G. scalarinervia, four previously described but poorly known species, thus providing a clearer circumscription of these species. Furthermore, G. discolor and G. megalophylla appear to have a wider distribution than previously thought. Lastly, G. macrantha, a curious species only known from the type, is excluded from the genus and referred to Uvaria. With the description of twelve new species and the synonymizing of... |

Sustainable forest management is more than limiting harvesting volume of timber in tall forest areas. Reclamation and restoration of depleted forest areas is gaining importance as areas of remaining tall forest are diminishing. Irrespective of the causal factors be it unsustainable logging, mining or forest fires, secondary forest resulting from these activities deserve special attention. In East Kalimantan a wide variety of trees has been used for reforestation of areas affected by the devastating fires of 1982- 1983. These attempts involved exotic as well as indigenous species, and results varied considerably. The 1998 fires that raged through the area sadly destroyed most of the successful trials. Gradually emphasis of reforestation has shifted towards... |
