Spiromesifen is an insecticide that inhibits the synthesis of lipids and, in Mexico, its use against the Tomato-Potato Psyllid, Bactericera cockerelli (Sulc), on chili pepper (Capsicum annum), tomato (Lycopersicon sculentum) and potato (Solanum tuberosum) began in 2005; however more information is needed to understand its toxicity on this insect pest. Resumen: El algodonero Bollgard II® expresa las δ-endotoxinas Cry1Ac y Cry2Ab de Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner, controla larvas de Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) y es probable que en un futuro cercano se empiece a utilizar en la agricultura mexicana. Sin embargo, se desconoce la susceptibilidad inicial a esta toxina en poblaciones de H. zea. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la susceptibilidad a la δ-endotoxina Cry2Ab en larvas neonatas de cinco poblaciones (una susceptible y cuatro de campo) de H. zea. The maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky) and the red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum Herbst) are two key pests of stored-grain products worldwide. The insecticidal activity of boldo (Peumus boldus Molina) powder, liquid ethanolic and hexanic extracts against S. zeamais and T. castaneum were evaluated under laboratory conditions. The evaluated variables were mortality, emergence of adult insects (F1), and grain weight loss. The experimental design was completely randomized. The mortality in S. zeamais was 100% even at the lowest powder concentration (0.5% w/w), whereas emergence of F1 adult insects was 0% and grain weight loss was < 0.08%.
