New molecular evidence supports the species status of Kaempfer's Woodpecker (Aves, Picidae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Azevedo,Lorena de Sousa; Aleixo,Alexandre; Santos,Marcos Pérsio Dantas; Sampaio,Iracilda; Schneider,Horacio; Vallinoto,Marcelo; Rêgo,Péricles Sena do.
Kaempfer's Woodpecker (Celeus obrieni) is the only species of the genus Celeus endemic to Brazil. The description of this taxon as a subspecies of the Rufous-headed Woodpecker (Celeus spectabilis) was based on a single specimen. While C. obrieni and C. spectabilis are now considered separate species based on morphological and limited molecular evidence, no study has critically tested the reciprocal monophyly and degree of evolutionary independence between these taxa with several specimens. Herein, fragments of the mitochondrial and nuclear DNA of three recently-collected specimens of C. obrieni were analyzed to evaluate the degree of evolutionary differentiation of this taxon with respect to C. spectabilis. The results confirm the reciprocal monophyly...

Comparative mitogenomic analyses of Amazona parrots and Psittaciformes Genet. Mol. Biol.
Lima,Nicholas Costa Barroso; Soares,André Elias Rodrigues; Almeida,Luiz Gonzaga de Paula; Costa,Igor Rodrigues da; Sato,Fernanda Midori; Schneider,Patricia; Aleixo,Alexandre; Schneider,Maria Paula; Santos,Fabrício R.; Mello,Claudio V.; Miyaki,Cristina; Vasconcelos,Ana Tereza R.; Prosdocimi,Francisco.
Abstract Amazon parrots are long-lived birds with highly developed cognitive skills, including vocal learning. Several parrot mitogenomes have been sequenced, but important aspects of their organization and evolution are not fully understood or have limited experimental support. The main aim of the present study was to describe the mitogenome of the blue-fronted Amazon, Amazona aestiva, and compare it to other mitogenomes from the genus Amazona and the order Psittaciformes. We observed that mitogenomes are highly conserved among Amazon parrots, and a detailed analysis of their duplicated control regions revealed conserved blocks. Population level analyses indicated that the specimen analyzed here seems to be close to A. aestiva individuals from Bahia...

A putative RA-like region in the brain of the scale-backed antbird, Willisornis poecilinotus (Furnariides, Suboscines, Passeriformes, Thamnophilidae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Lima,Jamily L.R. de; Soares,Fabricio A.; Remedios,Ana C.S.; Thom,Gregory; Wirthlin,Morgan; Aleixo,Alexandre; Schneider,Maria Paula C.; Mello,Claudio V.; Schneider,Patricia N..
The memorization and production of song in songbirds share important parallels with the process of speech acquisition in humans. In songbirds, these processes are dependent on a group of specialized telencephalic nuclei known as the song system: HVC (used as a proper name), RA (robust nucleus of arcopallium), LMAN (lateral magnocellular nucleus of the nidopallium) and striatal Area X. A recent study suggested that the arcopallium of the Sayornis phoebe, a non vocal learner suboscine species, contains a nucleus with some properties similar to those of songbird RA, suggesting that the song system may have been present in the last common ancestor of these groups. Here we report morphological and gene expression evidence that a region with some properties...

Campylorhamphus procurvoides successor (Aves: Dendrocolaptidae) is a junior synonym of Campylorhamphus trochilirostris notabilis Rev. Bras. Zool.
Portes,Carlos Eduardo; Aleixo,Alexandre.
The taxonomy of the genus Campylorhamphus Bertoni, 1901 is still uncertain, with many inconsistent evolutionary patterns implied by current taxonomy. A re-analysis of the type-series of Campylorhamphus procurvoides successor Todd, 1948 revealed that the holotype is indistinguishable from Campylorhamphus trochilirostris notabilis Zimmer, 1934, while the paratypes belonged either to the latter taxon or to a second already named taxon (Campylorhamphus trochilirostris snethlageae Zimmer, 1934), and a third and yet undescribed taxon allied to Campylorhamphus procurvoides. Here, we present statistical analyses of morphological data supporting the synonymization of C. p. successor into C. t. notabilis, the name with priority. Our findings resolve the...

The importance of riparian forest for the maintenance of bird species richness in an Atlantic Forest remnant, southern Brazil Zoologia
Anjos,Luiz dos; Volpato,Graziele H.; Lopes,Edson V.; Serafini,Patrícia P.; Poletto,Fabíola; Aleixo,Alexandre.
We compared the composition and guild structure of bird communities of riparian and upland forest in an Atlantic forest reserve, the Godoy State Park (GP), in northern Paraná State, southern Brazil. Unlimited distance point counts were sampled monthly from September-December 2001, along four trails. Two trails in upland forest (TA and TB) were parallel to each other and about 300 m apart. Two trails in riparian forest (TC and TD) were along the Apertados River, about 100 m away from the river. A total of 145 species were recorded: 81 species were recorded in both upland and riparian forests, 19 species were recorded only in upland forest and 45 species were recorded exclusively in riparian forest. Among the 81 species occurring in both forest types, 18...

Composição e dinâmica da avifauna da mata de Santa Genebra, Campinas, São Paulo, Brasil Zoologia
Aleixo,Alexandre; Vielliard,Jacques M.E..
A quali-quantitative survey of avifauna was earried out at the Santa Genebra forest reserve (MSG) in order to evaluate the current state of conservation of this important conservation area in the interior of São Paulo Stale. The qualilative survey recorded 134 species and the quantitativo survey through unlimited distance point counts recorded the abundance of 97 species. The low number of species recorded in both surveys was due to the small size (251 ha) and the high degree of isolation of the MSG. These factors plus the extensivo degradation of the forest cover prevent recolonization of extinct species and allow the expansion of some species tolerant to disturbance. The quantitative survey showed some species with an unusually high abundance index. The...
