Comparison of microbiological contamination level between different species of shellfish ArchiMer

The French microbiological monitoring network (REMI) has been carried out since 1989 in order to assess faecal contamination levels (Escherichia coli) of shellfish production areas. It has been shown that species growing at the same site may show differences in microbiological contamination. The aim of this study is to investigate these differences and to examine how it can be used in the context of monitoring networks, notably in identifying indicator species. We would expect an indicator species to yield results at least as high as those of the other species present. REMI has been managed by Ifremer for 20 years, in order to monitor and assess the microbiological quality of the shellfish growing areas. Recent EU regulation allows for evolution of the monitoring, with the development of sanitary surveys prior to classification of the area. The sampling strategy is based on the knowledge of the sources of faecal contamination, their characteristics and their behaviour (seasonal variations, circulation of pollutants...). The threshold fixed by Regulation EC n°854/2004 has changed, no tolerance for A and C class is permitted under the current regulation. The coastal environment is subject to multiple sources of contamination: urban wastewater, malfunctioning of collective or individual purification systems, discharge of pollutants from industry, contaminated runoff from agriculture areas. Bivalve mollusks are filter feeders, they concentrate the microorganisms naturally or accidentally present in the surrounding sea water. The presence of potentially pathogenic bacteria or viruses in coastal waters (Salmonella, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio cholerae, hépatitis A virus) may constitute a risk for molluscan shellfish consumers (gastroenteritis, viral hepatitis).

The microbiological monitoring and classification in Europe is based on faecal indicator E. coli monitoring in live bivalve mollusc. As a result of the implementation of the microbiological threshold defined by European legislation since 01/01/2006, almost all A quality areas have disappeared, and most areas show B quality. Percentage-wise, the C quality category is more frequently observed for areas with burrowing bivalves like clams and cockles. Impact of meteorogical conditions on the Thau lagoon’s shellfish farming area. Results and discussion ArchiMer

With 750 producers, 2750 tables for breeding, 13 000 tons of oysters and 2 500 tons of mussels marketed every year, the shellfish production of the Thau lagoon represents at least 10 % of the national French production and a direct turnover of 33 millions € (Rey Valette, 2004). The Thau lagoon is a semi-enclosed coastal system sensitive to faecal inputs from the watershed (280 km2). In June 2004, the Autorithies classified the Thau lagoon as a « class B » area, from which live bivalve molluscs can be marketed for human consumption only after depuration. Until then, shellfish used to be collected for direct human consumption. Determination of thresholds in marine molluscs as an alternative to the Environmental Quality Standards in marine water defined in the Water Framework Directive ArchiMer

The Water Framework Directive (WFD) establishes Environmental Quality Standards (EQS) in marine water for 34 priority substances. Among these substances, 25 are hydrophobic and bioaccumulable (2 metals and 23 organic compounds). For these 25 substances, monitoring in water matrix is not appropriate and an alternative matrix should be developed. Bivalve mollusks, particularly mussels (Mytilus edulis, Mytilus galloprovincialis), are used by Ifremer as a quantitative biological indicator since 1979 in France, to assess the marine water quality. The current study evaluates the effect of seawater physico-chemical characteristics on the relationship between the concentration of metals measured by Diffusive Gradients in Thin films (DGT) passive samplers (i.e., DGT-labile concentration) and the concentrations measured in discrete water samples. Accordingly, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to measure the total dissolved metal concentrations in the discrete water samples and the labile metal concentrations obtained by DGT samplers; additionally, lead and cadmium conditional labile fractions were determined by Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (ASV) and total dissolved nickel was measured by Cathodic Stripping Voltammetry (CSV).
