A syphilis co-infection study in human papilloma virus patients attended in the sexually transmitted infection ambulatory clinic, Santa Casa de Misericórdia Hospital, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil BJID
Souza,Lúcia Maria de Sena; Miller,William Meihack; Nery,José Augusto da Costa; Andrade,Arnaldo Feitosa Braga de; Asensi,Marise Dutra.
Despite the prevalence of syphilis worldwide, little is known about its manifestations when associated with other Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI), specifically the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Current epidemiological studies show that there is a high incidence of both diseases in ambulatory clinics all over Brazil. This study aims to estimate the incidence of syphilis - HPV co-infections, among patients from the STI ambulatory clinic at the Santa Casa da Misericórdia Hospital, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Two-hundred and seven patients were seen in the clinic between March and December 2005, of which 113 (54.6%) sought care for an HPV infection. Blood samples were taken from all patients to check syphilis serology using the flocculation and the...

Analysis of leukotoxin gene types of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans in brazilians with aggressive periodontitis BJM
Rosalem Junior,Wilson; Souza,Rodrigo Carvalho de; Andrade,Arnaldo Feitosa Braga de; Colombo,Ana Paula Vieira.
Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans (Aa) is considered a major etiologic agent of aggressive periodontitis but this species has also been associated with other forms of periodontal disease. Further, highly leukotoxic strains are related to severity of disease. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of Aa and the occurrence of the leukotoxin gene 530-bp deletion in patients with generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAP) from a Brazilian population. Thirty periodontally healthy and 29 GAP subjects participated in the study. Full-mouth periodontal examination including probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), supragingival biofilm (SB) and bleeding on probing (BOP) was carried out at 6 sites/tooth for all subjects....

Prevalence of leukotoxic genotypes of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans in Brazilians with chronic periodontitis BJM
Rosalem Junior,Wilson; Andrade,Arnaldo Feitosa Braga de; Colombo,Ana Paula Vieira.
Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans is considered a major etiologic agent of aggressive periodontitis but this species has also been associated with other forms of periodontal disease. Further, highly leukotoxic strains are related to severity of disease. This investigation determined the prevalence of A. actinomycetemcomitans and the occurrence of the leukotoxin gene 530-bp deletion in Brazilian subjects with chronic periodontitis. Twenty periodontally healthy and 20 chronic periodontitis subjects were selected. Full-mouth clinical examination was carried out at 6 sites/tooth. Subgingival biofilm samples were collected from the 3 deepest sites and 3 healthy sites from periodontitis subjects, as well as from 3 sites of individuals with periodontal health....
