Lodging causes yield reduction of rainfed lowland rice, particularly for the two popular varieties; KDML105 and RD6. Improving lodging resistance varieties has been in slow progress due to lack of understanding of morpho-physiological characters related to lodging resistance and also employing inappropriate protocol to evaluate lodging resistant among breeding lines. Experiments in wet season 2012 at UBN-RRC, NRM-RRC and UDN-RRC, were carried out to study plant characters in association with lodging resistance. Most farmers in the Northeastern Thailand grow Khao Dawk Mali 105, a non-glutinous variety because of its premium cooking and eating quality and its aroma. However, KDML105 is susceptible to blast, brown planthopper and soil salinity. In order to maintain its yield stability, it is necessary to incorporate those above mentioned traits into KDML105 background. By using molecular markers to select for those plants carrying the target genes in each generation, it will help improving the selection efficiency in term of accuracy and time consumed. IR57514-PMI-5-B-1-2 สายพันธุ์ข้าวสำหรับสภาพภูมิอากาศที่เปลี่ยนแปลง Thai Agricultural

Elite line, IR57514-PMI-5-B-1-2 was bred at International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in 1987. Then it has been selected at Phimai Rice Research Station. After that, yield trials were conducted under rainfed lowland condition in North and Northest Thailand. When grown in famer field under drought prone during 1996 - 1999, this line gaved the highest yield by average 542 kg/rai and inter-station yield trials during 2002 - 2014 it yielded by average 598 kg/rai which were 22 and 17% higher than KDML105 in the tested field conditions. The adventages of this line are drought resistance, submergence tolelance, resistant to rice blast disease and high adaptation to grow under rainfed condition. Bacterial blight (BB), caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo), is one of the most serious diseases of rice in all major rice-growing areas of Thailand. The most effective approach to control BB is the use of resistant varieties which is economically feasible, an environmental-friendly control method and easy for farmers to handle. However, the selection pressure from the usage of resistant cultivars may result in mutation of the pathogen population to overcome the resistance genes. The rainfed lowland rice breeding program for Northeastern Thailand: Phase II in collaboration with the Biotechnology project has developed an early maturing, non-glutinous promising line resistant to blast, namely UBN03007-47-7-7-26-35-19. This line was derived from the cross between IR77955-24-75-284 and DHL-279 (a blast resistant donor) at Ubon Ratchathani Rice Research Center in wet season 2003, using both conventional and marker-assisted selection methods. The line UBN03007-47-7-7-26-35-19 is a photoperiod sensitive line. The approximate harvesting date is on 10 November.
