Evaluation of Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) Used in Footbaths as Treatment and Prevention of Digital Dermatitis in Dairy Cattle Organic Eprints
Christensen, Jesper Ørsnes; Bennedsgaard, Torben Werner; Capion, N..
The effectiveness of a footbath with a calcium carbonate (CaCO3) suspension was evaluated as treatment and prevention of digital dermatitis (DD) in four commercial dairy herds. DD is a serious problem in dairy herds in many countries including Denmark. Footbaths have been the preferred method for treating and preventing DD. Different compounds have been used in these, most og them chemical disinfectants aimed at reducing bacterial infection. However many of these compounds have no proven effect against DD. Others have effect against DD but are either harmful to humans, cows or the environment. The objective of this study was to evaluate calcium carbonate (CaCO3) used in footbaths as treatment and prevention of DD. The study was done as a clinical...

Eleven years with organic dairy production in Denmark – herd health and production related to time of conversion and compared to conventional production Organic Eprints
Bennedsgaard, Torben Werner; Thamsborg, Stig Milan; Vaarst, Mette; Enevoldsen, Carsten.
This paper focuses on the changes in production, herd health and veterinary treatments in Danish organic dairy herds during approximately eleven years based on historic data from herds converted to organic milk production before 1990 (old organic herds) compared to herds converted in 1995 and 1999-2000 and herds that are still conventional. Herd size, milk production, the shape of the lactation curve, somatic cell counts and veterinary treatments for mastitis, retained placenta and ketosis are compared over time and between herd groups. The old organic herds differed from the other three herd groups by having lower milk production per cow, lower somatic cell counts and fewer treatments of mastitis. Herds converted in 1995 and 1999-2000 were comparable to...

Resistance to penicillin of Staphylococcus aureus isolates from cows with high somatic cell counts in organic and conventional dairy herds in Denmark Organic Eprints
Bennedsgaard, Torben Werner; Thamsborg, Stig Milan; Aarestrup, Frank Møller; Enevoldsen, Carsten; Vaarst, Mette; Christoffersen, Anna Bodil.
Quarter milk samples from cows with high risk of intramammary infection were examined to determine the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and penicillin resistant SA (SAr) in conventional and organic dairy herds and herds converting to organic farming in a combined longitudinal and cross-sectional study. 20 conventional herds, 18 organic herds that converted before 1995, and 19 herds converting to organic farming in 1999 or 2000 were included in the study. Herds converting to organic farming were sampled three times one year apart; the other herds were sampled once. Risk of infection was estimated based on somatic cell count, milk production, breed, age and lactation stage. The high-risk cows represented about 49 % of the cows in the herds. The...

Anvendelse af veterinære lægemidler Organic Eprints
Bennedsgaard, Torben Werner; Thamsborg, Stig Milan; Vaarst, Mette.

Reducing use of antimicrobials — Experiences from an intervention study in organic dairy herds in Denmark Organic Eprints
Bennedsgaard, Torben Werner; Klaas, I.C.; Vaarst, M..
With the aim of phasing out the use of antimicrobials 23 Danish organic dairy producers from the same organic dairy company participated in Stable School farmer groups from February 2004 to March 2005 in order to go through a common learning and development process towards their common goal. Data on production and herd health were evaluated from two years before to three years after the start of the Stable Schools. For comparison, data was collected from the remaining 35 herds delivering to the same dairy company, 118 organic dairy herds delivering to other dairies and 115 conventional herds. On average, the project herds were smaller with lower production and had half the incidence rate of mastitis treatment than the organic herds from other dairies...

Organic dairy farmers decision making in the first 2 years after conversion in relation to mastitis treatment Organic Eprints
Vaarst, Mette; Thamsborg, Stig Milan; Bennedsgaard, Torben Werner; Houe, Hans; Enevoldsen, Carsten; Aarestrup, Frank Møller; Snoo, Arno de.
In organic dairy farming, a goal about improved animal welfare and avoidance of the use of chemicals has introduced restrictions in the use of antimicrobials for treatment of infectious diseases. Mastitis is the major cause of antimicrobial treatments in Danish dairy farming. In order to improve and minimise the use of antimicrobials and the risk of antimicrobial resistance in organic farming, a study based on qualitative research interviews with newly converted organic farmers was carried out. Twenty farmers,18–26 months after conversion, were interviewed focusing on mastitis treatment patterns and the farmers’ own perception of possible changes in strategies, choices and daily routines linked to mastitishandling. Antimicrobial treatment was the dominant...

Management Practices for Disease Prevention and Treatment Choices by American Organic Dairy Farmers Running head: Health Management on Organic Dairy Farms Organic Eprints
Whistance, Lindsay; Bennedsgaard, Torben Werner; Vaarst, Mette.
In organic farming, the use of antibiotics is restricted to treatment of disease. In the USA, use of antibiotics results in an animal losing its organic status. Consequently, organic dairy farmers may have specific approaches to health management and disease treatment. Qualitative interviews were conducted with farmers and stockpersons on eighteen dairy farms in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and New York State in October 2010. Eight farmers had used antibiotics after conversion on calves and cows. These were isolated cases except for one farmer who consistently treated all calves with Coccidiosis. Antibiotics were missed by one farmer each for lameness and calf disease but otherwise farmers expressed a general satisfaction with alternative treatment plans in...

Analyse af mælkeprøver i pilotprojekt NYSundhedsrådgivning Organic Eprints
Aarestrup, Frank Møller; Bennedsgaard, Torben Werner; Enevoldsen, Carsten; Houe, Hans; Katholm, Jørgen; Larsen, Helle Daugaard; Nylin, Britta; Pedersen, Lars Holst.
