During a study of the Podostemonaceae for the Flora of Suriname a specimen of Apinagia was found which could not be placed in one of the species recognized by van Royen (1951, 1953, 1954). The specimen forms part of a mixed collection mainly consisting of Mourera fluviatilis Aubl. but also containing a specimen of Apinagia longifolia (Tul.) van Royen (sub Irwin et al. 55346A in K and NY).

With the appearance in 1889 of Engler’s treatment of the Urticales in “Die natürlichen Pflanzenfamilien” there came a pause in the interesting development of the classification of this group, which was defined, albeit somewhat vaguely, by A.L. de Jussieu in 1789 in his “Genera Plantarum” as the order Urticeae. Since the 1830’s, many, including Gaudichaud, Trécul, Miquel, Bureau, Eichler, Baillon, and Bentham, have contributed to the establishment of the Engler system which until recently has been generally accepted. In continuation of de Ruiter’s treatment of Myrianthus and Musanga (Bull. Jard. Bot. Nat. Belg. 46: 471-510.1976), the present paper gives a revision of the African representatives of 17 genera of the Moraceae. Ficus schwarzii as defined by Corner proved to be too heterogeneous and has to be split up into at least two entities, the Sulawesi one still heterogeneous and the other widespread one to be described as a new species, F. rosulata. Re-examination of herbarium material led to the discovery of a new species: F. kalimantana.
