The anchovy (E.anchoita)is one of the most abundant species in the Argentine Sea. Distributed in between latitudes 34°S and 48°S, it has only been caught, traditionally, along the coasts of Buenos Aires Province - particulary in the vicinity of Mar del Plata. Anchovy-like items are exported both to producing and consuming countries. During the last three years markets have been lost. In order to regain them and to develop new ones, particularly in Europe it shall be necessary to compete with products that are well-priced and of the high quality and have a substantial aggregate value. The anchovy domestic market could be enlarged- with certain limitations- be developing new products. |

This chapter includes an economic analysis of the small scale fleet of the Mar del Plata harbour, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. The original study was carried out at the request of the Skippers Fisheries Society to find out the relative efficacy and efficiency of homogeneous groups of associated vessels. Based on the information available, to tune the observed data, assess the relative efficacy and estimate the relative economic efficiency of the fleet, an ad hoc model was designed. Length, gross registered tonnage, engine power and number of crew members were considered and analyzed as structural variables for 1995, 1996 and 1997. No changes in variables for the period were observed so, the efficacy and efficiency analysis was carried out for the year... |

The analysis of the Argentine fishing fleet (SW Atlantic) evolution as of 1960 allows to explain the major causes of expansion, the crisis in the fisheries and the structural changes of the fleet during the 90's. Different fleet classification criteria focused on fishing capacity, fish landing composition, yields and productivity indices are described. The expansion cycles were associated to the incorporation of fishing vessels, while the 1960-1989 crisis originated in domestic and international economic crisis and changes in the strategy pattern of the fishing countries. The latter was related to overfishing of traditional coastal and demersal fisheries and to the full exploitation of resources such as squid, blue whiting and toothfish incorporated to the... |
