Are we mining the soil ? Organic Eprints

Seven organic farms took the opportunity to look at one or more of their fields. They gained insights into their rotations and NDICEA seems to be a useful tool for assessing nitrogen supply/losses throughout a rotation. The results on the farms indicate that there is a danger of losing nitrogen even in organic rotations. In the video, the researcher summarises the results and one of farmers taking part shares his thoughts. The common conclusions are that spring ley cultivation and strategic use of organic fertilisers are possible strategies for improving nutrient balances in organic farming. 'Flying livestock' and innovative strategies to keep the soil covered (e.g. living mulches, undersowing) may also help.

Exchanging knowledge to improve organic arable farming: An evaluation of knowledge exchange tools with farmer groups across Europe Organic Eprints

Organic farming is knowledge intensive. To support farmers in improve yields and organic agriculture systems, there is a need to improve how knowledge is shared. There is an established culture of sharing ideas, successes and failures in farming. The internet and information technologies open-up new opportunities for knowledge exchange involving farmers, researchers, advisors and other practitioners. The OK-Net Arable brought together practitioners from regional Farmer Innovation Groups across Europe in a multi-actor project to explore how online knowledge exchange could be improved. Organic farming is knowledge intensive and in supporting farmers in enhancing their production systems, there is a need to improve how knowledge is shared. This is the overall aim of the OK Net Arable project. Work Package 2 of the project is concerned with facilitating the testing of practical and educational materials with farmer innovation groups to improve knowledge provision in this sector. The work package adopts an interactive multi-actor approach, bringing together practitioners from regional innovation groups with each other, and with advisers and scientists. The results of a three year study in the UK suggest that there are several advantages to more complex mixtures; • Greater resilience to variable conditions • Combine early and late weed suppression • Slower decomposition on incorporation • Extends forage availability for key insect pollinators • Generally achieve higher forage yields • Potential for higher subsequent crop yields. OK-net arable: progress report of the co-ordination of farmer groups (WP2) Organic Eprints

The aims of this work package are - Co-ordinate the interaction and exchange between the national /regional farmer innovation groups to ensure good and constructive communication (Task 2.1) - Develop a framework that facilitates structured exchange of experiences in the area of arable crop production; developing conclusions for a general application in Europe based on regional results (Task 2.2) - Test innovative end-user and educational material, (e.g. manuals, web-based tools, interactive workshops etc.) and understand reasons for acceptance and successful implementation (Task 2.3- ongoing ) - Develop recommendations on the experiences (Task 2.4 – not started). The presentation shows progress and results from the work carried out until Oct 2016.
