The Impact of the New York State Retail Milk Price Regulation on Farm-to-Retail Price Transmission and Supermarket Pricing Strategies in Metropolitan Fluid Milk Markets AgEcon
Bolotova, Yuliya; Novakovic, Andrew M..
The New York State Milk Price Gouging Law establishes that the retail prices of fluid milk products are not to exceed 200% of the prices that NYS milk processors pay for Class I milk. The enforcement of this law significantly affected the nature of the Class I fluid milk price transmission process and the milk pricing strategies of supermarkets in the five largest cities in New York State: New York City, Albany, Syracuse, Buffalo and Rochester. During the pre-law period, supermarkets used a retail price-stabilization strategy, as evidenced by asymmetric Class I fluid milk price transmission. In contrast, supermarkets use a retail profit stabilization strategy during the law period. This variation of retail milk price control actually creates an...

The Impact of Coordination of Production and Marketing Strategies on Price Behavior: Evidence from the Idaho Potato Industry AgEcon
Bolotova, Yuliya; McIntosh, Christopher S.; Muthusamy, Kalamani; Patterson, Paul E..
High potato price volatility, decreasing demand for fresh potatoes and prices below the cost of production led to a decision of a number of Idaho potato growers to organize the United Fresh Potato Growers of Idaho, a marketing cooperative. The programs and strategies of the cooperative target both the production and marketing of fresh potatoes in Idaho. To evaluate the effectiveness of the programs implemented by the cooperative, we examine the level and volatility of fresh potato prices during two periods: before the cooperative was organized and when the cooperative is in the market. We find empirical evidence suggesting that fresh potato prices were higher and less volatile during the period when the cooperative was in the market.

Crop Production Using Variable Rate Technology for P&K in the United States Midwest: Evaluation of Profitability AgEcon
Bolotova, Yuliya.
This study evaluates profitability of crop production with variable rate technology (VRT) for P&K application relative to profitability of crop production with uniform rate technology (URT) using data from six fields with a corn-soybeans rotation situated in Indiana. The results suggest that crop production using VRT is more profitable than using URT in one of the six fields. In the case of the other five fields profitability of crop production using VRT relative to using URT falls in the range of 85 to 92%. Under the assumption of lower costs for field diagnostic services and variable rate fertilizer application profitability of crop production using VRT increases.

Traceability and Assurance Protocols in the Global Food System AgEcon
Jones, Eluned; Poghosyan, Arsen; Gonzalez-Diaz, Francisco; Bolotova, Yuliya.
In the 21st century, the food supply chain has become a complex, interconnected system with strategies that are aimed at creating improved products to satisfy consumers' demand for safer foods. To stay competitive and ensure consumer confidence, agribusiness firms develop and implement strategies that take into account not only traditional economic factors driving the food demand, but also issues such as food safety and quality. Traceability and assurance protocols help agribusiness companies improve and refine their production processes, thus providing better control over, and transparency of, food quality and safety throughout the food supply chain. This paper reports on the empirical results of focus interviews conducted during the 2004 IAMA conference...

The Economic Performance of Food-Manufacturing Industries in Idaho AgEcon
Bolotova, Yuliya.
As part of the global economy, agriculture and agribusiness of the State of Idaho have been significantly affected by the structural changes taking place in the food-supply chain. Constantly changing consumer preferences, new technologies, and globalization represent both challenges and opportunities for the food-supply-chain participants. The very diverse agriculture of Idaho provides a favorable market environment for agricultural producers and food companies to become involved in various food-manufacturing activities. This paper focuses on the quantitative evaluation of the economic performance of food-manufacturing industries in Idaho, using U.S. Economic Census data for 1997 and 2002. The results have implications for the strategic decision-making of...

Evaluating Economic Performance of Food Manufacturing Industries: An Analysis of the U.S. Pacific Northwest States AgEcon
Bolotova, Yuliya; Asiseh, Fafanyo.
This study develops a simple methodology of the analysis of the effectiveness of economic performance of food manufacturing industries and applies this methodology to analyze the effectiveness of economic performance of food manufacturing industries in the U.S. Pacific Northwest States (Idaho, Oregon, and Washington). The methodology is based on five ratios constructed using U.S. Economic Census data on value added, value of shipments, number of production workers, cost of materials, and capital expenditures. A regression model is estimated to test whether the overall effectiveness of economic performance measured as the share of value added in value of shipments is a function of the effectiveness of the use of individual groups of resources (i.e....

The Impact of Collusion on Price Behavior: Empirical Results from Two Recent Cases AgEcon
Bolotova, Yuliya; Connor, John M.; Miller, Douglas J..
We used extensions of traditional ARCH and GARCH models to examine the difference in the behavior of the first two moments of the price distribution during collusion and the absence of it using prices from two recently discovered conspiracies, citric acid and lysine. According to our results, the citric acid conspiracy increased prices by 9 cents per pound relative to pre-cartel and post-cartel periods. The lysine conspiracy managed to raise prices by 25 cents per pound. In addition, the variance of prices during the lysine conspiracy was lower than the variance of prices during pre-cartel and post-cartel periods as we expected. In contrast, the variance of prices during the citric acid conspiracy was higher relative to more competitive periods.

Contractual Relations in the Production and Marketing of Potatoes, Barley, and Wheat in Idaho: A Procedure for an Empirical Analysis AgEcon
Bolotova, Yuliya; Patterson, Paul E..
This paper develops a procedure for a comprehensive analysis of contractual relations in the production and marketing of potatoes, barley, and wheat in Idaho. The procedure focuses on analysis of contract choice by agricultural producers, processors and distributors; evaluation of the effectiveness of contract provisions; and analysis of the behavior of contract parties. The paper presents a review of related literature and a plan of activities to be performed, including the data-collection methods and the types of analyses to be used. The suggested methodology can be used to conduct a similar analysis in any agricultural-commodity market.
