Large-amplitude internal tides, solitary waves, and turbulence in the central Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Xie, X. H.; Cuypers, Y.; Bouruet-aubertot, P.; Ferron, Bruno; Pichon, Annick; Lourenco, A.; Cortes, Norbert.
Microstructure and fine-scale measurements collected in the central Bay of Biscay during the MOUTON experiment are analyzed to investigate the dynamics of internal waves and associated mixing. Large-amplitude internal tides (ITs) that excite internal solitary waves (ISWs) in the thermocline are observed. ITs are dominated by modes 3 and 4, while ISWs projected on mode 1 that is trapped in the thermocline. Therein, ITs generate a persistent narrow shear band, which is strongly correlated with the enhanced dissipation rate in the thermocline. This strong dissipation rate is further reinforced in the presence of ISWs. Dissipation rates during the period without ISWs largely agree with the MacKinnon-Gregg scaling proposed for internal wavefields dominated by a...

On the physical and biogeochemical processes driving the high frequency variability of CO2 fugacity at 6 degrees S, 10 degrees W: Potential role of the internal waves ArchiMer
Parard, Gaelle; Boutin, J.; Cuypers, Y.; Bouruet-aubertot, P.; Caniaux, G..
The availability of nutrients in the mixed layer is the main limitation to organic carbon biological production in the tropical regions. In this paper, we investigate the potential role of internal waves at promoting the development of biological activity on a PIRATA mooring at 6 degrees S, 10 degrees W. This mooring is located above the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where we observe strong internal waves. Using a one-dimensional physical and biogeochemical coupled model, we simulate dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). Providing the influence of vertical advection and turbulent diapycnal diffusivity are (it is vertical advection + turbulent dipycnal mixing) accounted for, we find that this model provides a good fit with observed in situ CO2 fugacity (fCO(2)). Main...

Near-Sea Surface Temperature Stratification from SVP Drifters ArchiMer
Reverdin, Gilles; Morisset, S.; Bellenger, H.; Boutin, J.; Martin, N.; Blouch, P.; Rolland, Jean; Gaillard, Fabienne; Bouruet-aubertot, P.; Ward, B..
This study describes how the hull temperature (Ttop) measurements from multisensor surface velocity program (SVP) drifters can be combined with other measurements to provide quantitative information on near-surface vertical temperature stratification during large daily cycles. First, Ttop is compared to the temperature measured at 17 -cm depth from a float tethered to the SVP drifter. These 2007-12 SVP drifters present a larger daily cycle by 1%-3% for 1 degrees-2 degrees C daily cycle amplitudes, with a maximum difference close to the local noon. The difference could result from flow around the SVP drifter in the presence of temperature stratification in the top 20 cm of the water column but also from a small influence of internal drifter temperature on...

Generation and propagation of internal tides and solitary waves at the shelf edge of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Xie, X. H.; Cuypers, Y.; Bouruet-aubertot, P.; Pichon, A.; Lourenco, A.; Ferron, Bruno.
High-frequency mooring data were collected near the northern shelf edge of the Bay of Biscay to investigate the generation and propagation of internal tides and internal solitary waves (ISWs). During spring tide, strong nonlinear internal tides and large amplitude ISWs are observed every semidiurnal tidal period. While onshore propagation was expected since the mooring is located shoreward of the maximum internal tidal generation location, both onshore and seaward traveling internal tides are identified. Within a tidal period at spring tide, three ISW packets are observed. Like internal tides, different ISW packets have opposite (seaward and shoreward) propagating direction. Based on realistic hydrostatic HYCOM simulations, it is suggested that advection...

Environmental factors influencing the seasonal dynamics of spring algal blooms in and beneath sea ice in western Baffin Bay ArchiMer
Oziel, L.; Massicotte, P.; Randelhoff, A.; Ferland, J.; Vladoiu, A.; Lacour, L.; Galindo, V; Lambert-girard, S.; Dumont, D.; Cuypers, Y.; Bouruet-aubertot, P.; Mundy, C-j; Ehn, J.; Becu, G.; Marec, Claudie; Forget, M-h; Garcia, N.; Coupel, P.; Raimbault, P.; Houssais, M-n; Babin, M..
Arctic sea ice is experiencing a shorter growth season and an earlier ice melt onset. The significance of spring microalgal blooms taking place prior to sea ice breakup is the subject of ongoing scientific debate. During the Green Edge project, unique time-series data were collected during two field campaigns held in spring 2015 and 2016, which documented for the first time the concomitant temporal evolution of the sea ice algal and phytoplankton blooms in and beneath the landfast sea ice in western Baffin Bay. Sea ice algal and phytoplankton blooms were negatively correlated and respectively reached 26 (6) and 152 (182) mg of chlorophyll a per m(2) in 2015 (2016). Here, we describe and compare the seasonal evolutions of a wide variety of physical...

Temperature Measurements from Surface Drifters ArchiMer
Reverdin, G.; Boutin, J.; Martin, N.; Lourenco, A.; Bouruet-aubertot, P.; Lavin, A.; Mader, J.; Blouch, P.; Rolland,; Gaillard, Fabienne; Lazure, Pascal.
The accuracy of temperature measurements from drifters is first examined for 16 drifters (manufactured either by Metocean Data Systems or by Pacific Gyre) deployed with two temperature sensors in the tropical or North Atlantic Ocean. One of these sensors is the SST thermistor commonly used on Surface Velocity Program (SVP) drifters since the late 1980s; whereas the other sensor is a platinum temperature probe associated with a Seabird conductivity cell. The authors find (for 19 separate deployments) an average positive offset of the SST thermistor measurements in 17 out of 19 cases, exceeding 0.1 degrees C in five instances. Among the five drifters that were at sea for a year or more, two present a large trend in this offset (0.10 degrees and -0.10 degrees...
