Novitates Gabonenses 63. Illigera Cava (Hernandiaceae), a new species from Gabon and Congo (Brazzaville) Naturalis

Illigera cava, endemic to Lower Guinea, is described, illustrated, and mapped. The new taxon brings the number of African Illigera species to four. Maps, and a key to the four species of Africa are presented.

A synopsis of Mendoncia (Acanthaceae) in continental Africa including the description of two new species from western Central Africa and a new subspecies from West Africa Naturalis

The amphi-atlantic genus Mendoncia of the Acanthaceae counts c. 80 species. In tropical Africa it is represented by 14 species, eight in continental Africa and six in Madagascar. The remaining species occur in tropical America. The new species Mendoncia camerounensis and M. rabiensis are described and illustrated. Mendoncia floribunda is resurrected, fully described, and illustrated as well. Mendoncia iodioides, reduced to a variety of M. phytocrenoides in the Flore du Gabon, is restored as a distinct species. The isolated western population of Mendoncia gilgiana is recognised as a new subspecies. The conservation status of all species is assessed. Revision of Abrus Adanson (Pap.) with special reference to Africa Naturalis

Abrus is a small natural genus of the family Papilionaceae, containing four species, well distinguished by the presence of 9 connate stamens. As a genus it was first described by Adanson in 1763 who based it on Glycine abrus L.. In fruit this species is easily distinguished by its conspicuously red and black coloured seeds, which are used in various ways, e.g. as beads in rosaries and necklaces, for making poison and medicine. The flowers of the species in Abrus do not show any character leading to specific segregation. Characters of the pod and inflorescence are more useful. One, imperfectly known, species is recorded only from Madagascar and another is confined to tropical Africa. The other two species have a circumtropical distribution, one of these, A....
