Variación temporal de la abundancia de huevos y larvas de Engraulis anchoita en el litoral norpatagónico entre enero y abril de 2001. Crecimiento y mortalidad larval OceanDocs
Brown, D.R.; Leonarduzzi, E.; Averbuj, A.; Livore, J.P..
Argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita) eggs and larvae abundance distribution patterns in the Argentine northpatagonian littoral during January-April 2001 were analyzed. As the season progressed, a process of decline in the reproductive activity was observed. Larval growth and mortality rates were established. Age determinations were performed analyzing otoliths daily increments. The 0.43 mm day-1 growth rate average did not show space-time differences, fact attributed to the homogeneity of the thermal field. The 0.32 d-1 January natural mortality rate was determined by exponential decline. Mortality rates, estimated with the mortality-aggregation model, were considered dependent on the larval size. The value ranges (d-1) were 0.07-0.49, 0.05-0.61 and...

Distribución de huevos, larvas y prerreclutas de merluza (Merluccius hubbsi) en la Zona Común de Pesca Argentino-Uruguaya. Período 1999-2001 OceanDocs
Machinandiarena, L.; Brown, D.R.; Ehrlich, M.D.; Pájaro, M.; Dorado, J.; Teso, V..
Distribution and abundance of eggs, larvae and prerecruit stages of Merluccius hubbsi were evaluated to examine spawning, nursery and settlement areas in the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone during the 1999-2001 period. Larvae and prerecruit stages were more abundant at stations from 50 m to 100 m depth. The nursery area would extend from the 50 m isobath south of 37° S to the 200 m isobath northward where the shelf becomes narrower. In the whole sampling area small size prerecruits were caught; therefore, the whole zone should be considered as a potential settlement area.

Validation of daily increment deposition in otoliths of the pejerrey (Odontesthes bonariensis) larvae OceanDocs
Brown, D.R.; Fuentes, C.M..
The daily basis of increment deposition in sagitta otoliths of laboratory and mesocosm reared (Odontesthes bonariensis) larvae was validated (Buenos Aires prov., Argentina). The timing of changes in rearing environment was recorded in otoliths by tetracycline marking. Results showed that increment deposition started at hatching and proceeded on a daily basis at least during the first two months of life. Thus, age and hatching date of O. bonariensis larvae can be easily determined by otolith reading within this period. This information will be useful to assess growth rate and mortality in extensive culture as well as in stock enhancement programs with this species.

Larval and juvenile growth of two Patagonian small pelagic fishes: Engraulis anchoita and Sprattus fuegensis OceanDocs
Brown, D.R.; Sánchez, R.P..
Patagonian anchovy (Engraulis anchoita) and sprat (Sprattus fuegensis) constitute the two most important pelagic resources of the Argentine Patagonian shelf (SW Atlantic). Age and growth parameters of larvae and juveniles of both species were determined analyzing otoliths daily increments. A total of 404 anchovies (4.1-33 mm SL) and 157 sprats (5-41 mm SL) were analyzed. The Laird-Gompertz growth model was fitted to the length-at-age data of anchovies: L(t) = 4.2 exp (2.28 (1-(-0.034 t))). The parameters of the model were: L: 41.06 mm; the inflection point: 15.11 mm and 27 days; and the maximum growth rate: 0.51 mm day-1. The length-at-age data of sprat larvae and juveniles were represented in two linear models: L(t) = 0.32 t + 7.6; and L(t) = 0.22 t +...
