Caenis Demoulini, a new Ephemeropteron from Thailand Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
During a short stay at Bangkok on December 3rd, 1953, Professor H. Boschma observed that enormous quantities of minute insects were attracted by lamplight in the hotel of the Royal Dutch Airlines (K.L.M.) "Plaswijk" at the airport Laksi. From the enormous accumulations of these insects around the lamps he collected a sample which he entrusted to me for examination. This sample proved to consist almost entirely of a new species of mayfly which is described in the present paper. Caenis demoulini nov. spec. Female imago. Head and thorax uniformly yellowish brown. Eyes purple-black, prominent. Antennae grey-brown ; median ocellus prominent, colour light brown with a darker edge. Abdomen pale yellowish brown, at the dorsal surface with light browngrey markings,...

Trachygystis (Dendrotrichia) sylvicola, a new subgenus and species from Rhodesia (Mollusca, Gastropoda Pulmonata: Endodontidae) Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van; Verdcourt, B..
In 1959 the first author (A.C.v.B.) discovered a peculiar snail of the pulmonate family Endodontidae in Rhodesia; on a subsequent expedition more specimens were obtained, so that a series is now available for description. The species undoubtedly belongs to the genus Trachycystis Pilsbry, 1893, but a new subgenus has to be created in order to accomodate this particular species. Anatomical data and figures have been supplied by the second author (B.V.), while the first author is responsible for the remaining part of text and figures. Dendrotrichia subgen. nov. A subgenus of Trachycystis characterised by ramose bristles on the surface of the shell; genital anatomy like that of subgenus Chalcocystis. Type species: Trachycystis (Dendrotrichia) sylvicola spec....

Notes on a drawing of Indian elephants in red crayon by Petrus Camper (1786) in the archives of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van; Pieters, F.F.J.M..
A drawing of two Indian elephants, signed "P. Camper f. 10 Sept. 1786", in red chalk or crayon, was found in the archives of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie in a manuscript by T.G. van Lidth de Jeude (1788-1863). Van Lidth de Jeude, professor at Utrecht university, obviously intended to use it as an illustration in his projected manual of the mammals in Dutch. The drawing is almost completely identical to an unsigned drawing in the Artis library, one of a series of three. The Leiden drawing is traced back to H. Schlegel, director of the Leiden museum 1858-1884, who most probably obtained the Van Lidth de Jeude papers upon his death. Van Lidth de Jeude is likely to have acquired the Camper drawing from G.J. van Klinkenberg (1768/69-1841), who in...

A contribution to the knowledge of non-marine Mollusca of South West Africa Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
The moment to collate scattered notes on South West African non-marine molluscs arrived last year when Mr. B. H. Lamoral of the Natal Museum, Pietermaritzburg (South Africa), entrusted the present author with the study of material obtained during a Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (C.S.I.R., Pretoria)-sponsored collecting trip. During Mr. Lamoral's explorations in 1969 in South West Africa non-marine molluscs were obtained as a sideline. Nevertheless the material is certainly considered sufficiently interesting to warrant publication. South West African material from various sources was studied and the following abbreviations have been used: BM for British Museum (Natural History), London; NM for Natal Museum, Pietermaritzburg; RMNH for...

The distribution of introduced mollusc species in Southern Africa Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
Artificial distribution patterns of animals and plants may be defined as those caused or fostered deliberately or accidentally by man. Consequently we can distinguish two types of artificial distribution, viz., that of animals accidentally distributed by man (rats, mice, insects, slugs, etc.) and that of animals deliberately transported by man (domestic and pet animals; species involved in transmission of game animals and biological control of insects and plants, etc.). A considerable proportion of accidentally transported animals is made up of non-marine molluscs and it appears that there are few countries on the seaboard that have not yet experienced the immigration of some foreign pulmonate. Accidental transport, invasion and establishment can only be...

Notes on some land and freshwater Mollusca from Auvergne, France Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
From August 16 till September 1, 1955, Dr. H. C. Blöte, Mr. J. J. Barkman, and the present author were the leaders of an excursion of students in biology of the University at Leiden to Central France. For some two weeks the party was hospitably lodged in the "Station Biologique" in the village Besse-en-Chandesse (département Puy de Dôme), 30 km S.S.W. of Clermont-Ferrand. Thanks to the generosity of Prof. R. Hovasse and Dr. L. Olivier, we could stay in this biological institute, which belongs to the University at Clermont-Ferrand. During the excursion the author paid special attention to the collecting of land and freshwater Mollusca. The very dry and hot weather during our stay was one of the main difficulties in carrying the project into execution;...

New data on southern African Achatinidae (Mollusca, Gastropoda Pulmonata) Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
Increasing knowledge of the genital anatomy of the species of the African land snail family Achatinidae has greatly improved our understanding of the delimitation of the species and the intricate interrelationships of the various taxa (Mead, 1950). The genitalia of many achatinids are still unknown due to the absence of properly preserved animals. New data, mainly on the reproductive organs of recently collected material, are supplied here for two Southern African species, Archachatina sandgroundi Bequaert and A. dimidiata (Smith), which have now been dissected for the first time. Acknowledgements are due to Mr. J. F. Peake and his staff at the British Museum (Natural History), London, Prof. K. J. Boss of the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard...

New taxa of Streptaxidae and Enidae (Mollusca, Gastropoda Pulmonata) from South Africa and Malawi Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
For various reasons a number of discoveries in the field of Southern African malacology has now reached a point where there is no need for further delay in publication. In the course of a long term project, the revision of the Streptaxidae of Southern Africa, three new taxa have come to light which are described below. Mr. C. C. Appleton (Bilharzia Research Unit, Nelspruit, South Africa) during an extended period of research in Tongaland (NE. Zululand, South Africa) has found a remarkable new form of the genus Gulella L. Pfeiffer, 1856. This is seemingly closely related to a recently described extinct species from Aldabra Island in the western Indian Ocean (Van Bruggen, 1975). It is an unfortunate consequence of the rules of zoological nomenclature that...

An early (1850) 'handwritten' shell exchange catalogue of the Leiden Museum, with notes on the collectors Rethaan Macaré and Tischbein Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
A ‘handwritten’ (lithographed) shell exchange catalogue of the National Museum of Natural History, Leiden (The Netherlands), dated 1850 and containing 864 nominal taxa (861 molluscs and 3 brachiopods), is discussed in the context of the history of the museum. This catalogue must have been distributed in a limited edition to shell collectors interested in the exchange of specimens. Among the exchange partners of the museum were the well-known 19th century Dutch collector Lady (later Dowager) F.J.M. Rethaan Macaré née Ontijd (1812-1887; first published portraits included) and the German P.F.L. Tischbein (1813-1883; first published portrait included); their contacts with the museum are discussed, mainly as regards this catalogue.

Miscellaneous notes on Southern African Gastropoda Euthyneura (Mollusca) Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
SUMMARY The following new distribution records of southern African terrestrial molluscs seem to be of particular interest: Pupilla fontana (Krss.), Rachis jejuna (M. & P.), Guppya rumrutiensis (Prest.), Xerocerastus burchelli (Gray) (all four new for Rhodesia), Euonyma damarica Jaeck. (new for Cape Province) and Streptostele herma Conn, (common at Lundi, Rhodesia). Xerocerastus schultzei (Bttg.) has to be expunged from the Rhodesian list; existing records are based on misidentifications. The following synonymies have been established: Achatina subcylindrica Preston, 1909, and A. s. deisenbecki Blume, 1952, nov. syn. of Archachatina (Tholachatina) transvaalensis (Smith, 1878) ; Helix (Nata) liparoxantha Melvill & Ponsonby, 1892, nov. syn. of Nata...

Dr Jacob van der Land, marine biologist extraordinary Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
This contribution is an attempt to sketch the life and works of Dr Jacob van der Land, curator of worms and chief marine biologist of the National Museum of Natural History, on the occasion of his official retirement. Born in 1935, Jacob van der Land read biology at Leiden University (1958-1964), where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1970 on a treatise on the Priapulida under the supervision of Prof. Dr L.D. Brongersma. In 1964 he was appointed curator of worms in the museum. Later on he took over leadership of the invertebrate section (excluding insects) of the museum and was also placed in charge of all marine research. Initially, Van der Land organized field trips for biology students of Leiden University to Scandinavia, who were able to sample seagoing...

Neosciara Wendalinae, an interesting new Nematoceron from the Netherlands (Diptera, Lycoriidae) Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
In the course of the year 1954 I received for identification a little Nematoceron belonging to the family Lycoriidae (Sciaridae). After a careful examination of the material and the literature I arrived at the conclusion that my specimens represented a hitherto undescribed species. It belongs to the genus Neosciara Pettey, 1918 (sensu Lengersdorf, 1930 and Frey, 1942). There is some confusion about the naming and delimitation of the genera in the subfamily Lycoriinae. The four most important opinions are : I. Lengersdorf (1930) : Genus Lycoria Meigen, 1800, syn. Saara Meigen, 1803, Gruppe I (no name, veins cu and m with bristles) and Gruppe II Neosciara Pettey, 1918 (cu and m bare). II. Séguy (1940) : Genus Lycoria Meigen, 1800 (cu and m with bristles) and...

Streptaxidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Pulmonata) of the Seychelles Islands, Western Indian Ocean Naturalis
Gerlach, J.; Bruggen, A.C. van.
The taxonomy of the species of the terrestrial carnivorous snail family Streptaxidae of the Seychelles archipelago is reviewed with the exception of the three species of the genus Priodiscus (vide Gerlach, 1995). All 18 species are restricted to the northern, granitic islands. This paper describes 15 species, including two new genera (Silhouettia and Careoradula), and four new subspecies (Edentulina dussumieri reservae, E. d. silhouettae, E. d. praslina, Stereostele nevilli parvidentata). The nominal taxon Streptaxis (Imperturbatia) constans var. silhouettae is raised to species level to become the type species of the new genus Silhouettia. The type species of Careoradula is Streptaxis (Imperturbatia) perelegans. Anatomical descriptions and figures are...

Revisionary notes on Negulus O. Boettger, 1889, a genus of minute African land snails (Gastropoda Pulmonata: Vertiginidae) Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
The genus Negulus is reviewed; only four Recent species, restricted to continental Africa, are recognized. The genus is extinct in Europe, being only recorded from Tertiary deposits. A key to the shells of the Recent species (all figured) is supplied. The anatomy is as yet unknown. A sinistral shell of N. abyssinicus is described from among a series of paralectotypes in the Leiden Museum, the first such abnormality in the genus (figured). A fair amount of shell material has become available (among which some historical specimens) so that metric data may be compared with greater confidence. Recent occurrence is established/confirmed for Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Zaire, Zambia, Malaŵi, and Bioko (Fernando Poo). The small size of the shell...

Studies on the Streptaxidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda Pulmonata) of Malawi 12 Four new species of Gulella s.l. Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
Gulella annibiodiversitatis spec. nov. is described from a few scattered localities in montane forest above c. 1300 m in southern-central Malaŵi. It is mainly characterized by a smallish (4.9-6.3 mm high), smooth and generally featureless shell without apertural dentition. Gulella menkhorsti spec. nov., has a small (2.3-2.9 mm high) and smooth shell with a six-fold dentition and is probably a restricted range endemic; so far it has only been recorded from the Mpita Forest in southern Malaŵi. A single smooth and small shell (2.7 mm) with a seven-fold apertural dentition from the Misuku Hills in northern Malaŵi also does represent a new species, Gulella crux spec. nov. Another sample from the same area, introduced as Gulella nuchalis spec. nov., has a...

Revision of the Sapotaceae of the Malaysian area in a wider sense. XV. Payena A. De Candolle Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
Payena as a genus was created by Alphonse De Candolle in his Prodromus Systematis Naturalis Regni Vegetabilis in 1844. He commemorated in it the French chemist A. Payen (1795—1871) in Paris. De Candolle placed in it the species Mimusops lucida, first described by G. Don; the latter employed this nomen nudum used by Wallich in his List of specimens in the East India Company’s Museum (1858). The famous Swiss botanist characterized the new genus by the following diagnosis on page 196: “Calyx 4-partitus (nec 8-partitus, ut dixit cl. G. Don), lobis ovatis, obtusis extus et margine puberulis, 2 exterioribus latioribus. Corolla 8-fida, basi tubulosa, superne campanulata, calyce vix longior; lobis 2 ante lobum quemque calycis, ovato-acutis, glabris. Stamina 8,...
