CAP Reform and Innovation: The Role of Learning and Innovation Networks Organic Eprints
Brunori, Gianluca; Barjolle, Dominique; Dockes, Anne-Charlotte; Hemle, Simone; Ingram, Julie; Klerkx, Laurens; Moschitz, Heidrun; Nemes, Gustáv; Tisenkopfs, Talis.
The technological and organizational solutions the agricultural sector has undertaken in the past are not always compatible with the constraints and opportunities that the rural economy and society will face in the future. There is growing agreement that the goal of sustainability cannot be fulfilled without a profound change in the way the economy is organized. Innovation policies are among the most suitable instruments for this purpose. The article, based on the SOLINSA conceptual framework, adopts a network approach to innovation policies. Based on empirical evidence collected from case studies across Europe in the first phase of the project, the paper proposes the concept of Learning and Innovation Networks for Sustainable Agriculture (LINSA). LINSA...

Final Report of the SOLINSA project. Project Deliverable D8.2 of the SOLINSA project (GA 266306) Organic Eprints
Moschitz, Heidrun; Tisenkopfs, Talis; Brunori, Gianluca; Home, Robert; Kunda, Ilona; Sumane, Sandra.
The Final Report outlines results of the Project “Agricultural Knowledge Systems in Transition: Towards a more effective and efficient support of Learning and Innovation Networks for Sustainable Agriculture” (Project acronym: SOLINSA). The project was conceived and implemented as a response to the need for identifying new ways of transition from “productivist” practices to more sustainable agriculture and rural development, where traditional institutions in charge of fostering innovation are not always relevant and effective. The EU SOLINSA project proposes a new organisational pattern aimed at fostering innovation for transition. It illuminates the role of learning and innovation in transition processes, explores networks as drivers of innovation...

Learning and Innovation Networks for Sustainable Agriculture: Processes of Co-evolution, Joint Reflection and Facilitation Organic Eprints
Moschitz, Heidrun; Roep, Dirk; Brunori, Gianluca; Tisenkopfs, Talis.
Editorial to the Special Issue on "Learning and Innovation Networks for Sustainable Agriculture: Processes of Co-evolution, Joint Reflection and Facilitation". There is growing recognition that the technological and organizational solutions the agricultural sector has undertaken in the past are not always compatible with the constraints and opportunities that the rural economy and society will face in the next future. This has generated an increased emphasis on transition towards new business, technological and policy models that address the challenge of sustainability. Innovation is key to transition, but the institutions that are charged with fostering innovation are often locked into old approaches and methods of intervention. The linear view of...

ORGANIC IN THE LOCAL VS GLOBAL ANTINOMY Organic Eprints
Colombo, Luca; Grando, Stefano; Brunori, Gianluca.
Increasing attention is paid by European citizens to food chain characteristics, power relations and impacts. Distance travelled by food, its genuinity and capacity to convey cultural and landscape identity, fairness in the value chain and information robustness on quality specifications tend to assume a growing relevance in both public perception and business organisation. A triennial multidisciplinary and multicriteria study, funded under the EU 7th Framework Research Programme, aims to assess the performance of local and global food chains against economic, environmental, social, health and ethical dimensions. This paper examines how organic foods and method of production fits into the local/global discourse, as the subject emerges from an Italian...

Contribution of short food supply chains to sustainability and health Organic Eprints
Schmid, Otto; Brunori, Gianluca; Galli, Francesca; van de Graaf , Pieter; Prior, Alistair; Ruiz, Roberto.
Short Food Supply Chains (SFSCs) are increasingly taken into consideration by policy and decision makers. In the European funded research project FOODLINKS an analysis of 19 cases was carried out in order to provide evidences on the diversity of SFSCs as well as to assess their contribution and potential to sustainability and health. SFSCs are varied in nature and practice. They exist in a range of forms in both commercial and non-commercial settings. In this paper a pair comparison of six different types of SFSCs was made: a) two “Face to Face initiatives; b) two proximate more complex SFSCs and c) also two spatially extended SFSCs. Key issues of the analysis were: activities, actors, type of products, area and territory, health and sustainability...

ACTION PLAN FOR INNOVATION AND LEARNING. AGROECOLOGY AND ORGANICS IN EU INNOVATION POLICY Organic Eprints
Moeskops, Bram; Torremocha, Eva; Häring, A.M.; Padel, Susanne; Brunori, Gianluca; Micheloni, Cristina.
The EU has put innovation at the heart of its strategy for achieving smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. In comparison with earlier EU research policy, the focus has shifted from research for its own sake to innovation with tangible impact. Putting ideas into practice has become the central goal of Horizon 2020, the EU's Framework Programme for Research & Innovation for 2014-2020. This evolution also affects Europe's food and farming sector. Innovation support will be strengthened in the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Among the different measures that are foreseen in the CAP for 2014-2020 is the creation of a European Innovation Partnership for Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability (EIP) that should close the gap between research...

Opportunities and Barriers for Niche Marketing of Lamb in European LFAs based on Consumer Attitudes to Product Quality Organic Eprints
Rahmann, Gerold; Ashworth, Stuart; Boutonnet, Jean-Paul; Brunori, Gianluca; Papadopoulus, Ilias.
With commodity prices continuing to decrease and with policy constraint that farmers cannot easily increase their incomes by increasing volumes of production, they must find alternative ways to maintain their standard of living. This can be achieved by either niche marketing of agricultural products or by environmental payments, which are either paid by the government or the consumer. The results of a consumer survey carried out in Less Favoured Areas in Scotland, Germany, Greece, France and Italy to assess consumer attitudes of what constitutes the quality of lamb and the extent to which this provides an opportunity to exploit niche marketing, are discussed. Consumers generally have much less interest in the use of regional labelling,...
