SUPPLY AND DEMAND ISSUES FOR A CONVENIENCE LEARNING COURSE AgEcon
Burton, Robert O., Jr.; Schurle, Bryan W..
This paper explores and analyzes supply and demand of university-level convenience learning courses. Procedures involve use of microeconomic theory to conceptually analyze supply, demand, benefits and costs and a case study comparison of a traditional course to a convenience learning course that has been offered for three years.

Alfalfa Hay Quality and Alternative Pricing Systems AgEcon
Hopper, Jared A.; Peterson, Hikaru Hanawa; Burton, Robert O., Jr..
Price-quality relationships for alfalfa hay were analyzed by hedonic pricing models using 1996-2001 Wisconsin auction data. Individual nutrients included in the analysis all affected alfalfa price, with acid detergent fiber accounting for the largest impact. Alternative pricing models, based on an aggregate quality index or detailed quality information, were similar in their ability to predict price. However, disaggregating price predictions to account for differences in relative feed value (RFV) and crude protein (CP) indicate that both RFV and CP are important determinants of price and that aggregating the two into a quality index is not warranted.

USE OF ALTERNATIVE DEPRECIATION METHODS TO ESTIMATE FARM TRACTOR VALUES AgEcon
Dumler, Troy J.; Burton, Robert O., Jr.; Kastens, Terry L..
Six depreciation methods were used to simulate the value of farm tractors with indexed and expected prices. Accuracy of simulated values was evaluated using paired t-tests of mean absolute percentage errors and forecast accuracy regression models. Results varied with age and use. Some depreciation methods were more accurate than others.

Use of a Crop Simulation Model to Provide Long-Term Data for Economic Analysis: the Case of Early Maturing Soybeans AgEcon
Burton, Robert O., Jr.; van der Hoeven, Guido; Featherstone, Allen M.; Granade, George V..
A target MOTAD model is used to investigate incorporation of early maturing soybeans by a crop farm in southeastern Kansas. Weather (WGEN) and crop simulation (SOYGRO) models are used to generate a long-term series of soybean yields. Results indicate that early maturing soybeans offer a risk-reducing diversification strategy.

WHAT CAN A KANSAS FARMER AFFORD TO PAY TO RENT CROPLAND? AgEcon
Mills, Jeffrey B.; Burton, Robert O., Jr.; Dhuyvetter, Kevin C.; Kastens, Terry L..
Five years of continuous annual data are used to measure the marginal value product of cropland (return to land) on approximately 100 Kansas farms. Determinants of the marginal value product are investigated using regression.

IMPLICATIONS OF ALTERNATIVE FARM TRACTOR DEPRECIATION METHODS AgEcon
Dumler, Troy J.; Burton, Robert O., Jr.; Kastens, Terry L..
Responsible management and tax related to depreciable resources should consider the accuracy of depreciation methods in estimating current market value. This paper compares seven depreciation methods for farm tractors with respect to information required and accuracy of remaining value relative to market value. Management and policy implications are discussed.

RISK AND RETURNS TO LANDLORDS AND TENANTS FROM ALTERNATIVE LEASING ARRANGEMENTS AgEcon
Burton, Robert O., Jr.; Dhuyvetter, Kevin C.; Kastens, Terry L.; Tajchman, Jenna R..
Based on 20 years of yields and prices, expected annual net returns and variability of returns are measured for landlords and tenants under provisions of the 2002 Farm Bill for a representative crop rotation in North Central Kansas under alternative leasing arrangements and with conventional and no-tillage.

ADJUSTMENTS IN A BEEF/SHEEP FARM IN RESPONSE TO THE CATTLE CYCLE: THE POTENTIAL FOR INCREASED AND MORE STABLE INCOME AgEcon
Burton, Robert O., Jr.; Wollo, J. Wesseh.
A dynamic (multi-period) linear programming model of a beef/sheep farm was used to evaluate the potential for increasing income and for maintaining a specified level of annual income during a cattle cycle. Results indicate that both objectives may be accomplished by adjusting animal numbers in response to changing price ratios: a higher proportion of cows should be kept during the accumulation phase of the cattle cycle, and a higher proportion of ewes should be kept during the liquidation phase.

ALLOCATION OF FARM FINANCIAL STRESS AMONG INCOME, LEVERAGE, AND INTEREST RATE COMPONENETS: A KANSAS EXAMPLE AgEcon
Featherstone, Allen M.; Schroeder, Ted C.; Burton, Robert O., Jr..
Suggested methods to reduce farm financial stress have included interest rate buy-downs and debt forgiveness. This study develops a method to estimate the proportion of individual farm financial stress attributable to an income problem, a leverage problem, and an interest rate problem. Of the Kansas Farm Management Association farms with a financial problem, 30 percent of the total financial problem is caused by an interest rate problem, 28 percent by a leverage problem, and 42 percent by an income problem. A reduction of leverage or interest rate to the level attained by the average nonstressed farms would make 31 percent and 32 percent of the stressed farms profitable, respectively. Therefore, in the short run, an interest rate buy-down or a debt...
