Morphing Hydrofoil Model Driven by Compliant Composite Structure and Cavity Pressure ArchiMer
Mohammed Arab, Fatiha; Augier, Benoit; Deniset, François; Casari, Pascal; Asrolfi, Jacques-andré.
In this work a collaborative experimental study is conducted in order to assess the effect on the hydrodynamic performanceofacompliantcompositehydrofoilcontrolled by an imposed cavity pressure. It is expected that the cavity pressure together with composite structures is suitable to control the hydrodynamic forces as well as cavitation inception and development. A new concept of morphing hydrofoil is developed by the authors and tested in the cavitation tunnel at the French Naval Academy Research Institute. The experiments are based on the measurements of hydrodynamic forces and hydrofoil deformations under various conditions of cavity pressure. Effect on cavitation inception are shortly studied too. In parallel to this experiment, a 2D numerical tool is...

Influence of residual stresses and geometric imperfections on the elastoplastic collapse of cylindrical tubes under external pressure ArchiMer
Le Grognec, Philippe; Casari, Pascal; Choqueuse, Dominique.
The buckling problem of a circular cylindrical shell has long been widely investigated due to its great importance in the design of aerospace and marine structures. Geometric imperfections and residual stresses are inevitable in practice and have been so far frequently considered in analytical and numerical predictions. But little attention has been paid until now on the combined influence of such initial defects on the critical and often unstable response of such elastoplastic structures. In this paper, a shell finite element is designed within the total Lagrangian formulation framework to deal with the elastoplastic buckling and post-buckling of thin cylindrical tubes under external pressure and axial compression. A specific experimental process will be...

Morphing Hydrofoil Model Driven by Compliant Composite Structure and Internal Pressure ArchiMer

Characterization of residual stresses in wound composite tubes ArchiMer
Casari, Pascal; Jacquemin, Frederic; Davies, Peter.
This paper presents a method for the characterization of residual stresses in thick filament wound tubes. The three materials considered in the study are wet wound epoxy composite tubes based on E glass, R glass and T700 carbon fibres with three winding angles, [+/- 35], [+/- 55] and [+/- 851 with respect to the longitudinal axis. The aim of the present work is to measure internal stresses, based on strains liberated by cutting composite tubes, and to compare results with predictions from a residual stress model based on the classical equations of solid mechanics. This leads to a simple technique which allows the quick identification of the effects of manufacturing and moisture on the internal multi-axial stress level.
