Massive sand beds attributed to deposition by dense water cascades in the Bourcart canyon head, Gulf of Lions (northwestern Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Gaudin, Mathieu; Berne, Serge; Jouanneau, J.-m.; Palanques, A; Puig, P; Mulder, T; Cirac, P; Rabineau, Marina; Imbert, P.
Nowadays, the Gulf of Lions continental shelf and slope are under the influence of dense water cascading, wind-induced bottom currents and the geostrophic Northern Current. In order to characterize sedimentary activity at the shelf break, several interface and piston cores were taken in the Bourcart canyon head and a current meter equipped with temperature, conductivity, pressure and turbidity sensors was moored during the 2003-2004 winter season. Even if the canyon is not connected directly to continental sources since Last Glacial Maximum, detailed grain size, X-ray and sediment facies analysis of interface cores show that down to 350 m water depth, the canyon head is blanketed by up to 1.5 m of structureless muddy medium-grained sand. 210 Pb-exc...

Évolution morpho-structurale récente de la plateforme continentale ouest-rifaine (Maroc nord-atlantique) ArchiMer
Cirac, P; Frappa, M; Jaaid, Eb.
A 3.5 KHz high-resolution seismic survey carried out on the West-Riffian continental shelf, between Cap Spartel and Rabat, has shown that the morphostructural lineaments already identified on the continent, mainly within the South-Riffian western basin and its margins, extends towards the sea, on the continental shelf. These structures are related to stepped anticlinal flexures with a large curvature radius. The paleozoic acoustic substratum to the south and the cenozoic to the north are both characterised by a succession of abrupt erosion surfaces whose relatively constant bathymetric position could be attributed to paleoshorelines. We have also shown that the river mouth of Oued Sebou has changed position in the course of the Quaternary, under the...

Instabilities and deformation in the sedimentary cover on the upper slope of the southern Aquitaine continental margin, north of the Capbreton canyon (Bay of Biscay) ArchiMer
Gonthier, E; Cirac, P; Faugeres, J; Gaudin, Mathieu; Cremer, M; Bourillet, Jean-francois.
Acoustic and core data have recently been collected on the shelf break and the upper part of the slope of the south Aquitaine continental margin. They reveal the major role played by mass-flow gravity processes in deposit erosion and redistribution, modelling of the sea-bed, and transfer of sediment toward the deep-sea. The study region is bounded in the south by the Capbreton canyon. The northern area, which shows a smooth morphology, is characterised by small-scale deformations due to sediment creep or low-amplitude slide processes. The deformations are associated with mini listric-like faults that bound packets of sediments in which the deposit geometry is typical of constructional sediment waves. These sediment waves result from the interaction of...
